I just felt a little vibration and my monitor was shaking about 15 minutes ago. Anybody else?

Damn, you have enough gas in your ass to cause an after shock?: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post_now/post/earthquake-reported-along-the-east-coast/2011/08/23/gIQAozdEZJ_blog.html
I've never felt an Earthquake before, but I would imagine why it would be frightening to those who haven't felt one before.
I'm in Minnesota, I've been inside a few Tornaodos, but nothing else. I hope everyone will be safe in these coming days.

Back when my family and I lived in Japan, there had been a few smaller earthquakes that hit in the area we lived in and I didn't think much of them. Then one rainy night, there was a big enough one that everything was dancing including the mirror that was bouncing off the wall (though it didn't fall down). It lasted a pretty long time and when we went back inside, I was pretty freaked out, then again, I was about 9 years old. Fast forward 12 years and living in Okinawa, I had just come in from working at the chow hall and sat down to read the Stars and Stripes when everything started shaking. I watched a crack form in the wall around the window. I just went back to reading the paper. I even slept through earthquakes in SoCal.
Sure, if the quake is big enough, it might rattle someone pretty good, but a small one is no worse than the 18 wheeler that is driving down the street outside your house, ya barely notice it.
Do you know anybody that can prove that statement?[QUOTE="Dracula68"][QUOTE="m0zart"] I mean, if it can be felt in NY,m0zart
It was said by some people on news coverage. I have no idea how you could prove it though, at least, prove those people were telling the truth.
My cousins lives down in New York and they felt it.
I live in Southern California. Our earthquakes will eat the east coasts earthquakes for breakfast. I heard the Washington Monument has a crack in it.
[QUOTE="killerband55"]
so when are these after shocks supposed to happen?
Jebus213
Already did. Like an hour after the small quake there was a 2.2 after shock. There was a 4.2 during 8PM and the last one woke me up at like 12:30 last night...
no wonder why i didnt notice it? wait, did it feel like a jackhammer going on below your feet?

Earthquakes of lower magnitudes transfer more energy through the ground over a wider area in the eastern US due to the makeup of the ground itself. Much of VA, WV, PA, TN, KY, NC, AR, MO, etc.. are sitting on bedrock so solid that a 5.8 is a bigger deal than a quake of a much larger magnitude would be in CA. Combine that with the extremely shallow depth of the quake that hit VA, and you have a fairly major event despite the fact that it was rated as a moderate quake. Not catastrophic by any means, but a bigger deal than a 5.8 would be in CA. The New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 were great examples of this. Here we had quakes estimated between 7.6 and 8.1 centered in Arkansas that rattled houses in Boston and Canada. It's about how much energy gets transferred from the epicenter outward due to the bedrock in the area.
