Well, it certainly is more valuable than someone with a very low IQ. If there was a proof of anything, anyone who wouldn't believe it would be stupid so why are we talking about proofs/evidence?

LJS9502_basic

Nope. In the absence of proof/evidence every opinion is worth the same. I've known people with high IQ's and no common sense. I've known people with high IQ's and no wisdom. I've known people with high IQ's and no education. IQ is good to a point but utterly worthless in this discussion. Second....we're not talking about people with very low IQ's. I'd imagine we're in the normal to high range for discussions sake.

I know, which is why I didn't say anything like Einstein's opinion is more valuable than yours or mine. What I was trying to say was that Einstein was very smart, and I tend to consider smart people's opinion as being more valuable. That doesn't make it true since there are no proofs, but at least it's a smart, well-informed guess.

Maybe you've heard some "smart" people have stupid opinions, but I've heard lots of stupid people with stupid opinions. Nothing to do with religion, though.

You didn't answer the question.

What is evidence, and what is proof?

Dracargen

I'll help:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/

You still didn't answer the question. Is it because evidence and proof are the same exact things? Maybe. Let's see what the all-knowing Internet has to say.

Definitions of evidence on the Web:

  • attest: provide evidence for; stand as proof of; show by one's behavior, attitude, or external attributes; "His high fever attested to his illness ...
  • your basis for belief or disbelief; knowledge on which to base belief; "the evidence that smoking causes lung cancer is very compelling"
  • an indication that makes something evident; "his trembling was evidence of his fear"
  • testify: provide evidence for; "The blood test showed that he was the father"; "Her behavior testified to her incompetence"
  • tell: give evidence; "he was telling on all his former colleague"
  • (law) all the means by which any alleged matter of fact whose truth is investigated at judicial trial is established or disproved
    wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Definitions of proof on the Web:

  • any factual evidence that helps to establish the truth of something; "if you have any proof for what you say, now is the time to produce it"
  • a formal series of statements showing that if one thing is true something else necessarily follows from it
  • validation: the act of validating; finding or testing the truth of something
    wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

They are not the same thing. As stated before, you need multiple pieces of evidence, or a really strong piece, in order to provide proof. Evidence is tangible, proof is a concept.

I am a deeply religious nonbeliever - this is a somewhat new kind of religion.
Albert Einstein

I do not believe in the God of theology who rewards good and punishes evil.
Albert Einstein

I do not believe in immortality of the individual, and I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern with no superhuman authority behind it.
Albert Einstein

It was the experience of mystery - even if mixed with fear - that engendered religion.
Albert Einstein

That deep emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God.

It doesn't really matter whether or not Einstein believed in god, he was still a brilliant man.The point is that he believed in Spinoza's god, which really isn't god at all.

not really. the point the author of the thread is trying to make is that evidently, Einstien knows all and his opinion on religion is fact because he's smarter than us.

To be correct....science hasn't provided any proof. So I guess science DOESN'T explain everything.

LJS9502_basic

Science can't provide proof for that which does not exist to begin with. How can they get proof if there's no starting point?

Ontop of that, at least scientists are giving it a go, whereas religious folk have decided they have the answers already even though their beliefs are based on wishful thinking. That's like voluntarily wearing blinders, and refusing to ever take them off. I don't get why a person would want to do that.

It would behoove you to read the entire thread first. I differentiated between objective, subjective, informed, and uninformed. Facts, proof and evidence in relation to opinions. He only offered an opinion with no proof as comparable to informed opinions. Now I have some yard work to do. Bye.....

It seems that this thread has been more of a discussion over the semantics of value rather than the actual nature of Einstein's views. Wouldn't discussing the views themselves be more relevant than accusing the TC of having misguided values?

[QUOTE="bman784"]It seems that this thread has been more of a discussion over the semantics of value rather than the actual nature of Einstein's views. Wouldn't discussing the views themselves be more relevant than accusing the TC of having misguided values?LJS9502_basic

Most definitely!!! However, there are a few that just feel the NEED to correct/question someone elses opinion instead dicussing the topic at hand.

I guess you didn't notice this thread was about opinion then....

And yes DS I do my yardwork when it's cooler. Got the front done. Thanks for caring.

But the TC posted a new news story detailing the newly revealed religious views of someone who is popularly known by the public as being an extremely intelligent man. While I'm not saying that gives his opinion any more validity, it is recent and it is relevant. People didn't have to suddenly start backpedaling and questioning the validity of the opinion.

I had higher hopes for you. If you have any doubt as to the reason for this thread....read the topic title over to yourself a few times and then tell me he was concerned with a news item.

Of course I can identify the subjectivity that he's stating this with, but I find it unnecessary to turn the topic of discussion over to the validity of the opinion as opposed to the opinion itself.

If your title isn't catchy or controversial then it tends to get ignored...
