I find it hilarious you guys voted in the people who were found to be in contempt of parliament with a majority. Maybe this will be entertaining after all.

[QUOTE="Nibroc420"][QUOTE="Tylendal"][QUOTE="Nibroc420"] :| read their budget then?

I went to "Budget 2011" on their website. It's still very vague. Seriously, as far as I can tell the conservatives platform is all about preventing Jack Layton from murdering kittens. At least that's what the T.V. ads say.

I think you're overestimating the attack ads, and they were used by all parties, not just the tories.

I don't know what T.V. your watching, but I've ONCE seen a liberal ad that was merely acting in self defense, saying that there were no plans for a coalition, half a dozen ads for the Green Party, and I've lost count of the number of Anti-Ignatieff ads I've seen since back in March, and anti Jack Layton ads ever since the NDP started gaining power.

From my perspective, it certainly seems that the position of political parties in Canada is much more volatile than in the U.S.

The country is less partisan than the US for the most part. Party of the issue being we have 2 left wing parties and one "right" wing party (which is usually quite moderate). Harper himself has basically played nice the last few years and kept the fact he's very religious under wrap which makes him more appealing to the undecided as he's already the leader and nothing too terrible has happened yet under him. I think alot of people who usually vote Liberal were pushed to the conservative vote because Iggy was such a terrible prospect for PM. Waaaay too much dirt on him.

They were voted "in contempt" because the other parties wanted to remove them from power and needed the slander to do that. Thank god it didn't work.

So... any thoughts on the future of the Liberal Party?

Is this a nadir from which they will return, or are they finished, and will the two major parties in Canadian politics now be the Conservatives and the NDP? In four short elections they've gone from four solid majorities to barely hanging on.

GabuEx

They have been around for over 100 years, the Liberals aren't going anywhere. The NDP gain is only short term, people were tired of elections and the NDP seemed like a good "protest" vote. Once the next election roles around and the NDP have managed to accoplish nothing, things will start to revert back to the way they were. The Liberals need a solid leader (Justin Trudeau anyone?) and to get back to a party message that speaks to the Canadian people.

I agree I didn't see a single NDP attack ad and very few liberal attack ads. I didn't see a single non-attack ad by the conservatives. I honestly doubt political ads have much weight anyway.

Interesting. Would it be fair to say that the Canadian electorate is more willing than its U.S. counterpart to abandon their ideolgical platform in order to oust a poor candidate that is representative of their party? I am not certain (in fact I am rather ignorant of) how the political structure of Canada actually works, but in the U.S., a poor party leader would have a negative effect on the party results as a whole, but not nearly comparable to the results in this election.

Actually, I voted Green, but only to give their overall percentage a boost. NDP winning was a foregone conclusion in my riding, and I'm happy with that. I just wish that we had proportional representation, so that every vote would count. The fact that a party with 39% of the popular vote is a majority is ludicrous.

On french TV, the liberals attaked quite a lot the conservatives and bloc at the beginning, but after that, it all became an NDP intense bashing!
Conservatives attaked the bloc and liberals, and NPD, well, they attaked the conservatives a bit,, but they mostly played the savior card!!!

I would say this election shows they probably are more willing to vote against their usual party if they disliked it's leader. I know someone who for the first time voted against the Liberal party because it's leader was a very poor choice. We're less party loyal here I think. There's always exceptions of course but Canada is generally much less partisan than the US.

Yeah, in Canada we change our political beliefs on a whim. People won't vote for a leader (even if they believe in the parties policies) just because he lived in another country or speaks with a heavy accent. I've been in many political arguments with people and the vast majority of them vote for a party because they don't trust any of the other leaders, it has nothing to do with their political beliefs. All that to say, the vast majority of Canadians are idiots.

I think many of us do, you're not alone. At least the NDP gathered more support and the bloc is basically gone - Now if only FTPT was switched over to Popular Voting, I'd be happy.

I think it's a great thing that people change their opinions and their vote based on recent events. The last thing we need is American-style politics where political parties are extreme, 90% of the states are firmly red or blue regardless of the actual issues at hand, and a couple states here and there that can go either way.

While I would agree with that statement in and of itself, but it seems to me that you guys are changing your votes because of people's reputations instead of how said votes would affect the course of politics. Of course, I can't say that with any authority on the matter.

Thank you NDP for splitting the Liberal vote and allowing the Conservatives to win majority! On a side note BQ got crushed!

I'm looking forward to the next 4 years.

If I may ask: Why?

Almost everything the Conservatives want will benefit myself, my friends and family. Not to mention I think they'll do a decent job.

Wait, you actually know what the conservatives plan to do? Please tell me, because I don't have the slightest clue.

Are you rich?

Upper middle class, though most of my family is pretty well to do.

Ah, I see, so f*** everyone else because you got yours, right?

Yikes, that was harsh...expect to get moderated for that comment.

Create a mess obviously :P Though corporate tax cuts is what appeals the most, to bring it down to 15% from the current 16.5%. Obviously being politics I wouldn't be sure of everything they plan now that they have such power. Until they act everything is just talk. Interesting though that the NDP have gained so much power considering they're polar opposites to the Conservatives.
