The Army seeks death penalty for soldier who killed 16 Afghan civilians

We do not intentionally target civilians in any way, shape, or form. This soldier did, and the Army is seeking the death penalty for it. This is what America stands for, when one of our own does wrong, he or she WILL face the consequences. Enough with the America hating lies I see being spouted around this forum every day on how we indiscriminately kill everywhere we go. It is all lies and it is not condoned in the smallest form. When you hear of innocents being killed in an airstrike someone's career is over, if not jail time depending on the circumstances.

Word. Now if only the US would get the fvck out of parts of the world we have no business in, and let the savages of the third world settle their own bullsh!t disputes, the situations in which this even happens would go away.

That's sure as sh!t not going to happen, though. Waaaaaay too much money in the military/industrial complex for that.

I guess that's why when a video of soldiers gunning down civilians from a helicopter was released said soldiers were put on trial and the guy who released the video was given a commendation for bringing such behavior to light. Oh wait...

This guy gets it.

Though it's really not that hard to get. The corruption going on at all levels of these "wars" in the middle east is pretty much obvious to anyone who even tries to learn anything more about the news than what gets aired on fox/cnn/msnbc.

People like to spout out whatever they can when they don't know what goes on. From a person that does know, whenever an injustice like this or smaller crimes occur, careers are over and people are court- marshalled.

death penalty seems kind of harsh for this guy. Yeah he killed 16 people, but I think he probably snapped from stress or something and had a mental breakdown. If I recall correctly, the soldier shot up the Afghan villagers a short while after a group of Afghan soldiers and policeman that the U.S. army was training gunned down a the American troops that were training them.

If the US military really set out to kill civilians, the death tolls would be staggering. That being said, killing people through nonintention or negligence still isnt a good thing.

Lol yeah right. Like with Haditha or the video of the collateral murder or the other several examples where the perpetrators got scott free or a couple of years in jail? An accusation is not a sentence.

Haven't you heard of William Calley? Probably not, the government did a great job of covering it all up. The only reason they're doing this is too look good in the public eye, otherwise they would've swept it under the rug like so many others.

There are definitely some cover ups out there but to believe any military personnel can just kill someone because they want to and not face extreme punishment is blatant stupidity.

Well War is Hell. Bad stuff happens and some people make bad choices, bad calls are made, or small miscalculations are made that end in tragedy. The people who are a part of these situations have to find a way to live with it. Some times @$$ h*%#^ who never like to leave their computer like to complain about it. Historically speaking, U.S. soldiers were hated when they came back from Vietnam. The Irony in this is they were picketed against the people who picketed them to come back home. This was all as a result of war being filmed and put on television. Civilians at home dont need to see the hell that goes on overseas. It's usually Fubar. Thats why we go. also alot of people on these boards arnt Amercian, so they dont feel bad about talking $&&%.

The other thing that many people forget about the Army is that they focus on moral values. There is a moral code. If you are given imoral orders, it is your moral responsibilty to not follow through with them. But during modern war, many enemies hide in the open apearing to be civilians.

In the end you can stand behind our troops, or you can certainly stand in front.

It doesn't matter at all what they intended. Civilian casualties are always an atrocity -- period. People need to shut the hell up and accept that fact. It's wrong when we kill Pakistani civilians in a drone strike, just as it was wrong when Al Qaeda killed Americans on 9/11. Are the Pakistanis any less dead than the Americans because the Americans had intended to kill someone else? It was wrong when we fire bombed Tokyo and nuked two cities just as it was wrong when they bombed Pearl Harbor. It was wrong when Churchill starved German civilians just as it was wrong when the Nazis perpetrated their well-documented crimes against humanity. I can't believe I even live in a world where people justify or even celebrate the killing of innocents in military conquests. Killing innocent people is ALWAYS wrong, and those who make exception to that rule in the name of patriotism or nationalism or their own conscience are cowards and fools.

Not sure what I was thinking, I forgot where I was. I think I am finished with diplomacy, you are all not worth my time.

How about this, all of you who hate American can kiss my ***. If you are American I hope a terrorist near you reaches out and touches your life personally so maybe you can appreciate what we are trying to do to protect you from them overseas so they don't flock here.

If you are not n American I hope my country takes EVERY cent we have been giving you away and leaves you to fend for yourselves.

I am tired of my country giving to a world that refuses to give back in any way shape or form. You want an isolationist America? Funny, so do I!

The hilarious thing is who are you going to call for help the next time you need it? FTW.

Pretending that civilians will not be victims in a war is stupid. But it is also nothing to be "proud" about to own up to it.

Ive never heard anyone try to justify the killing of inocents. How ever, as civilians ourselves (unless you are in service) we are not given the details of every war tactic used or mis calculations made. War is a terrifing thing. Thats why we give so much support too our troops who have to deal with it every day. Every war has civilian tragedys, however i find your comparison of Churchhill to Hitler apauling. Hitler was responsible for the death of billions of inocent people. He formed camps and put them there were he burned alive, shot, starved, gassed and tortured these people just because of their religeon. Now I dont know much about the churchhill incodent you just mentioned, but it certainly isnt as bad as hitler I am not justifing it though.

I also think that being in a seprate continent the idea of civilian tragedy is much harder for us to understand. Honestly, Im thankful for that.

Therein lies the problem. Humans wage war. War will have casualties. Not all casualties are targets. Collateral damage is not the same thing as targets. It is unfortunate. But you can't and won't have one without the other.

I always find it funny when clueless people make assumptions that hold very little in truth. People are acting like Staff Sergeant Bales is the only US Soldier who has faced the death penalty for the murder of foreign nationals. He is far from the only one. Google Steven Dale Green, you will see he is serving life in prison for raping and murdering a 14-year old Iraqi girl. If the US really wanted to murder a bunch of Afghans they would just pull all troops out and bomb the place until there is a crater where every major city used to be.

Some of you have no idea what kind of punishment troops can face under the UCMJ. Where else in the US can you go to jail for cheating on your wife, or having sex with a married woman even though you are single yourself? Or go to jail for telling your boss to fvck off, for being late for work, or coming up positive on a urine test (things a civilian could at worst face being fired for)?

What happened to Green is the exception not the norm. The majority of those who do stuff like that that I've seen get ridiculous sentences or go free. Also the US army hasn't enforced the death penalty on anyone since 1961.

They don't specifically target civilians, that's just silly. However they don't give a sh*t if they do get caught up on the crossfire.tagyhag

Quite a lot actually. There is nothing inherently different about someone when they put on the uniform. The military gets all types

What about when they "double tap" with their drones? Yes, double tap, its what they call a drone strike where they time bomb drops on the same target to kill the first responders. Its breaking international war crimes... BUT LOOK, THEY'RE PROSECUTING THIS ONE SOLDIER, THE WORLD IS GOOD AGAIN.

Most of the time it's not setting out to kill but it's part of the plan that they will be civilian casualties.

When you hear of innocents being killed in an airstrike someone's career is over, if not jail time depending on the circumstances.

[quote="TC Linked Fox News article"] The Army said Wednesday it will seek the death penalty against the soldier accused of massacring 16 Afghan villagers during pre-dawn raids in March. The announcement followed a pretrial hearing last month for Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 39, who faces premeditated murder and other charges in the attack on two villages in southern Afghanistan. Prosecutors said Bales left his remote base in southern Afghanistan early on March 11, attacked one village, returned to the base, and then slipped away again to attack another nearby compound. Sixteen people were killed, nine of them children.

Just the same as a botched airstrke!

There are definitely some cover ups out there but to believe any military personnel can just kill someone because they want to and not face extreme punishment is blatant stupidity.
