ever had a dissuction thread locked on u?

Just thought I'd ask the forum community this question:

Have you ever had a discussion thread locked on you?

Now not that I am rebelling against the establishment here or saying that the mods are power crazy. However it seems rather big brother that a person can choose to lock a thread if they think it is off topic.

In the course of every day conversation and discussion people start out with a specific topic, they may shift around a little touching on the far corner of the subject. But should someone come in and shut them down casting the thread into the bottomless archives of threads long past? 

So to answer my own question, Yes I have had a discussion thread locked on me.

Who said anything of rebelling? Was my sarcasm too much? Should I not use so much in the future? Should I be knocked down because of my inexperiance?

Not any of my threads no, but we just had the Mac vs. PC thread locked on us a moment ago. Lame.

I had one locked in the Wii forum.  Before the Wii release 80% of threads were "Can I still pre-order?" So I created one asking people what they're favorite web comics were.  It got closed and I lost a couple points :(cametall

Most semi-decent discussion threads on this site tend to get locked rather pointlessly. I've never had a thread of my own locked, though, but that's mostly due to the fact that I seldom make threads and when I do, not many people even know what to make of them.

Yes, I have had many discussion threads that have been locked. Were they because of me, no, but nonetheless, the mods are allowed to lock topics that they see unfit. People really should stop complaining about how harsh they think the mods are. metallica_fan42

Perhaps all that is needed is some general rules on when a subject is off topic instead of (not that I am saying all judged criteria is based on these) personal opinions, whims, dislike of certain radical elements etc.

With out some policing of these threads we could not have this discussion right now without flamers and other riffraff chocking up this thread.

Agreed. If a discussion is "bad" then it should be locked. However who decides what is bad? I believe blatant negativity and foulness is bad but again who am I?

Maybe if there were some guidelines for locking threads the forums would be perfect as you can get.

Otherwise it seems that things mentioned before determine whether a thread is deemed off topic

Thank you for sharing. Due to my noobness I cannot confirm or deny your experiences thus the creation of this thread.

I liked your use of "semi-decent" "locked rather pointlessly".

Maybe you would like to know what the "point" was in some of these threads that got them locked? Only one person seems to know in each individual case.

Perhaps a warning shot across the bow, as were, would put the discussions back on course.

Perhaps some of our valiant policing force practice this but I cannot say.

No, I generally avoid making threads that will get locked.  It's not exactly hard.  If you don't have anything intelligent to say that doesn't break the rules then just don't make it into a topic.  Post it in someone else's topic. :P?  I think I meant that as a joke, yet somehow it doesn't feel like one.masterchief2512

A most interesting idea. Avoid making threads that wont get locked. Common sense tells me that graphic, lewd, disgusting, racist, flaming, etc posts will be locked.

However what about "pointlessly locked threads"? Pointlessly meaning no apparent reason. Perhaps an explaination of the off topic lock would enlighten those such as myself if it were given right before the lock.

It might of been "Teh Emo bashing stops now!" or something...I'll try to find it!!! 

Well, my point was more about unspoken (or at least not spoken well) rules.  For instance, anything that belongs more in a blog than a forum is locked and seems to deserve it.  Some are hard to describe, but I've yet to personally see one locked that didn't just seem to deserve it.

But I guess they don't seem to need to be locked to a lot of people.  Guess I'm just lucky my self conciousness lines up so well with what the mods think is appropriate. :D
