Police have confirmed it was a bomb explosion and there are casualties and injuries, Looks really bad :(

A large explosion has hit near government headquarters in the Norwegian capital Oslo.

The offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg were damaged extensively - a government spokeswoman said he was safe.

Police said a number of people were injured in the city centre explosion. No-one has said they were behind the attack, which witnesses said could be heard across the capital. Television footage from the scene showed rubble and glass from shattered windows in the streets - smoke was rising from some buildings. The wreckage of at least one car was on one street. All roads into the city centre have been closed, said national broadcaster NRK, and security officials evacuated people from the area, fearing another blast.

"Police can confirm there were deaths and injuries following the explosion in the government quarter this afternoon," police said in a statement

Oistein Mjarum, head of communications for the Norwegian Red Cross, said his offices were close to the site of the explosion. "There was a massive explosion which could be heard over the capital Oslo," he told the BBC. Mr Mjarum said there were fires burning in the prime minister's 17-storey building. "This is a very busy area on Friday afternoon and there was a lot of people in the streets, and many people working in these buildings that are now burning," he said.

Eyewitness Ole Tommy Pedersen said he was standing at a bus stop about 100m away from the blast. "I saw three or four injured people being carried out of the building a few minutes later," Mr Pedersen told AP. He said there was a cloud of smoke billowing from the lower floors.

A journalist with Norwegian public radio station NRK said the headquarters of tabloid newspaper VG were also damaged. "I see that some windows of the VG building and the government headquarters have been broken. Some people covered with blood are lying in the street," the Associated Press news agency quoted him as saying.

Could it have been a big gas leak? Those things can get massive and level buildings.

Possibly though it seems very conveniently located and according to Reuters there was the twisted wreckage of a car outside

Thinking it was deliberate is jumping the gun. This isn't like London, Paris, or Berlin, three cities in which countries are actively engaged in the war on terror and in Libya. Norway hasn't been a major player in any of these things at all.

Jesus, there are reports of a second blast. If true, then this is most likely a terrorist attack.

Think it is for sure, yes. Thinking it might be, no. Only a year ago in Norway, three arrests were made of Norweigian men accused of planning terrorist attacks under the Al Qaeda umbrella, and it wasn't clear whether their targets were in Norway or elsewhere. Norway isn't the first country I think of when I think of that kind of activity, but it's not off the map for me.

Hmm Seems to be a very politcal balst, though natural gas can be still a cause, the expolsion seems to have come from inside the building in the retuers pictures.

Norwegian prosecutors on Tuesday filed a terrorism charge against Mullah Krekar, founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam, who is accused of threatening a former minister, Erna Solberg, with death.

"Norway will pay a heavy price for my death," he said. "If, for example, Erna Solberg deports me and I die as a result, she will suffer the same fate."

Yeah, the location raises my index of suspicion that it may not be an accidental blast. However, gas leaks and other types of accidents can happen.

I say It's a little too early to jump on the cause being a bomb, it's not confirmed to be the reason nor that there's a second place where a explosion has gone off. It could be a simple gas leak. Just hope those wounded are seriously wounded.

Hard to say. It certainly seems very suspicious, but accidents can happen. I am leaning toward it being an attack, however. That's what my incredible sherlockian holmes reasoning skills seem to suggest.

Those crazy Kurds, being at war with everyone these days. Though is part of the Kurd faction we support or part of faction we don't support?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14254705.

There are also reports of 2 other bombs somewhere in the city. Military Police are scouring the city. Both are unconfirmed at this moment.

Reports are that it is car bomb but will not know for sure, also reports say there is no gas line in the area.

Not sure either nut fanatics are well fanatics, new reports suggest that the target was supposed to be the oil and energy ministry the plot thickens though.

i know this is selfish and all, because it is about my country and not the one directly affected, but i hope to god our politicians in the states dont use this as an excuse to put up new invasive "safety measures"
