My brother told me I made too much eye contact during a conversation and it was creepy. Is it weird to make eye contact throughout a conversation? I've never thought about it before; it just seems natural for me to look into people's eyes when I am talking to them. So, how about you, OT? Do you make eye contact when you are speaking with someone?

Too much eye contact? That's weird. Unless you were trying to burn a hole through the other persons face by staring, that would be creepy, because you can kind of tell if the other person is annoyed by the conversation.. But no, eye contact is perfectly normal. I was brought up to believe it polite to keep eye contact with whomever you're talking to, especially during exams, job interviews and the like. Staring is rude and it's often pretty clear when it's staring instead of polite eye contact. But some people just have 'those' eyes.

I think I heard it depends on the culture. Some people may say it's a form of disrespect, while in other countries, you're actually expected to make eye contact with those you talk with.

Not enough eye contact is what's weird. Unless your eyes bug out during the conversation, you should be maintaining eye contact most of the time.

You periodically should probably look away for a second but that's it.

I understand that it's not right to stare at someone for any reason; but when you are speaking to them it is considered polite to maintain eye contact, right? I think it would be rather odd to look at someone's eyes, then away, then back, and so on every few seconds.

I usually don't make eye contact. I just feel weird. I'll usually just look at something behind people when I talk to them, unless I am at work where I force myself to make eye contact.

That is what I thought. I know in many African cultures you are never to make eye contact with someone superior to you, but European society disagrees.

Unless you like someone, you should never be making too much eye contact. Too much meaning you're staring at the person as if you're going to lunge at them and have a big make out session. At the same itme, too little eye contact is bad as well. Somewhere in the middle is just fine.

I've ever heard that idea before. I've come to the understanding that not making eye contact makes you look like you have little confidence; which is not desirable in most situations.

There's just something about having a person look at me during a conversation, that for some reason, creeps me out.

Naturally, I don't make much eye contact and I try to avoid it with people I just met.

You should dart eyes a few times especially if you're talking to other guys or an elder. With girls it's more acceptable to maintain 100% constant eye contact. There aren't any hard rules but that's what works best for me.

Even that's too close for me unless it's a decent looking chick. Back in high school one of my best friends was a close talker. He would get right up on you to talk. It drove me nuts and he refused to ever move back. :x

I disagree that you should make eye contact most of the time. Then again I might not notice how much I do it. When I am aware, I feel much too uncomfortable to do it.

I have a friend who sticks his head right next to mine to say things about people nearby while we're out in public. It is the worst. I always walk away but he never gets the message. He also walks so close to be that I can't change direction, so I have to check my path and walk behind him to do so.

I prefer to shiftily move my eyes around constantly when I'm talking to someone, never making eye contact with them at all. That makes people trust you I've heard.

It really depends on the people. For example, I probably wouldn't get too close to a person who looked and gave the aura of a serial killer. On the other hand, if I'm talking to someone in a crowded place, it should be expected to get a little close unless you want to shout to hear each other.

I usually just look at the different points on a person's face(left eye, right eye, nose, mouth, etc) and cycle again every few seconds. That way it doesn't look like I'm staring into their soul.
