And of course religious fanaticism doesn't help people who are obviously somewhat mentally ill in the first place.

SgtKevali

Neither does violent games, movies, books, and TV shows.

But strong ideology has a much more profound effect on people than those other mediums do.

Religious fanaticism is a tiny percentage of religion in a whole though.

But these people were part of that minority. I never made a broad, sweeping claim that all religious belief is dangerous.

Doesn't change the fact that those things will affect a mentally ill person.

Generalizations are rampant in this thread.

Why would you kill someone over a T.v. Program. :?

Religious fanaticism is responsible, to a large degree, in this case. They killed him because he didn't want to watch the religious program.

Not to say that religion in general is dangerous, though.

So if they killed him because he didn't want to watch House instead, House was the problem? I think they killed him because they had mental problems. :|

In no way is religious fanaticism responsible for the death in this case. An argument escalated to a physical confrontation. Period. They did not kill him for faux/misguided-religious dogma.

That's nothing, my nephew was watching Veggie Tales when his sister changed it to Spongebob. Now we can't find her anywhere and this muffled banging sound coming from the walls is getting really annoying.

They argument escalated to that level because of their strong feelings towards their ideology. Same thing can happen with other strong beliefs; even sports fanaticism, pointless as it may be. It's not so much strong religious fanaticism that's dangerous in this sense, it's fanaticism towards anything in general. It's not responsible (ultimately people are), but it can exacerbate initial problems within people.

Or watch something worthless like a religious show. I am sure if God existed he would not give a crap.

I hate misleading titles like this. If anything, his family was angry that he didn't let them watch a gospel show, not because he wanted to watch the World Cup game. While that's not much better, writers try too hard to make a situation look worse than it is. I'm sure this was about more than just watching the World Cup game over a Gospel Show. That was probably only a very small part of the fight.

People who let religion take over and consume their life become like this. Pretty much anything you are obsessed with could make you like this.

Many people in this thread sound close-minded.

Despicable, violent, primitive morons beating up an innocent man. Its sad that this is just one of many that happens in the world.

Also 'Thou shalt not kill'.
