Years back Century Media had three of my favorite unknowns, Moonspell, Rotting Christ, and Samael.

I'm pretty sure The Strokes are very popular.

The Seatbelts, Psyrcroptic, Strung Out (still unsure of how popular they are on here, but no one ever talks about them), and I got a whole list of bands my friend gave me that I have never heard of, stuff like Annotations of an Autopsy, Brain Drill, From A Second Story Window and Whitechapel.

even though I consider these bands popular, I don't think enough people recognize the brilliance of the Dead Kennedys or Operation Ivy.

Obvious answer - Brian Jonestown Massacre are no where near as popular as they should be. Except their new album, what a disaster.

They can't be big with the limited amount of songs they have out.

My favorite bands are usually with female vocalists.

You probably don't want to hear about all my underground metal bands.

Try these Folk, Ambient and Avant-Garde bands:

Ulver

When

Dargaard

Die Verbannten Kinder Evas

The Moon and the Nightspirit

Tenhi

Graumahd

The amount of songs has nothing to do with a bands popularity.

We're talking about bands that are overall not well known not just in your area or "circle" as you call it...

Ah, that's cool. I hear great things about their shows. The bassist has a pretty nice sideproject going on aswell; Food For Squirrels - Trulio Disgracias.
