You can read the full story here.

The basic gist of it all is that there's a slight chance (1 in 2500) that in 3.5 billion years the planets' orbits are going to spazz out and Earth will end up crashing into either Venus or Mars. All I have to say about that is that is the most kickass apocolypse scenario ever. Screw asteroids, now we can all die by watching a ****ing planet collide into us. What makes it even cooler is that the competing gravity fields would rip each planet apart before they even crashed. So basically we'd all die by falling up into the sky, getting stuck halfway into space, and then getting squashed when the two planets finally meet head-on.

Now for those who still want to live, you may be interested to know that apparently this is all Mercury's fault as it's the first planet in every simulation to go haywire, eventually screwing up Jupiter's orbit which in turn messes with all the inner planets' orbits. So, if we want Earth to survive then Mercury must die. I mean, would anybody even miss it? Would you miss it?

Lol, this is awesome. The human race will probably have killed itself off by then (hell, I don't know if it can even survive another thousand years), but I say we kill off Mercury if humans survive that long.

Wouldn't destroying Mercury still mess up the orbit and engage this possible oblivion earlier then it should happen.

In 3.5 billion years, the earth's geothermal activity should be grinding to a halt anyway, which will quite possibly mean the end of life on Earth. And then with the Earth being engulfed by the sun not long afterwards, this doesn't really change much, as far as life on Earth is concerned. Bottom line is that our planet will probably only be able to sustain life for a few more billion years, and then that's it. No matter which doomsday scenario you choose, we've got a few more billion years max (by which time humans will almost certainly have gone extinct anyway) and then that's it for our planet.

Really, you're talking about something happening 3.5 billion years from now as a threat to us?One thing I've never really understood is the need to think (even if only implicitly and possibly subconsciously) that life will go on forever. Considering that death has been the ultimate conclusion for EVERY living organism that has EVER existed, it just seems weird to me that so many people worldwide still have such dfficulty accepting death. SUNS die. PLANETS are extinguished. It is expected that the UNIVERSE ITSELF will continue to expand until ALL MATTER dies. Yes, we will die, and it is unlikely that we will live long enough to see our planet die. Interstellar space travel will not save us. Intergalactic space travel will not save us. Nothing will save us. And if our mortality makes our lives so much more precious, then the same applies to the entire universe.

I'm sticking with what my grade 7 teacher said. They have proven that the sun is infact growing, and the sun will engulfe, thus destroy the Earth, in about 4.3 billion years.

I'm not actually worried about this and I'm well aware of all the other ways the Earth/humanity/life will end. I'm just saying that of all the ways for Earth to end, this is probably the most epic.

darkmark91

First of all the closest constillation is Canis Major, which is about 8.9 light years away. That will not hit us any time soon. Nothing is going to happen in 2012, its all lies. The mayens disappeared when they got to 2012. that doesn't mean anything will happen then. I also see a constillation hitting us very unlikely, let alone a planet. But, it may happen, We will never know without scientific observation. I can see meteors hitting us, maybe comets, but planets? unlikely, but possible. No garauntees now, but, Just don't hold your breath for it. Wouldn't want anyone of you guys sufficaticating over what I said lol.

But just don't get your hopes up, unless you're honestly wanting it lol. I want it to happen!! Wait, what? but still.

it doesn't matter, in 3.5 million years, we'll have interstellar travel, or be gone. whatever race hits interstellar travel becomes truly invincible, and eradication becomes impossible.

I also learned this in science, that when to galaxies collide, they just pass right through eachother. So pretty much, there is no worry form it.

Um... worry? 3.5 billion years is one **** of a long way away. We will be LONG dead by the time it matters. And really, if we do survive that long, we'll have more to worry about with the Sun going red giant than the planets crashing into one another.
