you obviously don't see my point, because my point is that the canadian government is competent enough to detect when a media outlet is blatantly trying to decieve the public when they have the real facts, so them making a law to protect journalistic integrity is completely just

rocinante_

So, you're saying the only news outlet that "lies" is Fox?

no, i know there are others. but according to the canadian government, fox news does it consistently enough to be essentially banned from broadcasting within canada, so that certainly says something, doesn't it?

And there's the problem. When you single out one news organization and not the others it says something about the government.

News orgainzation A gives an anti-big government slant, while news organization B gives an pro-big government slant. Which one do you think they're going to claim "lie" the most? The one that supports them or the one that doesn't? It's a slippery slope.

For fvcks sake MSNBC recently got caught editing the Zimmerman tape. They are just as bad as Fox.

and a bit of clarification for those in this discussion: this law doesn't specifically ban fox news, it bans all lies made by media outlets broadcasting within canada, which is why fox has pulled out from taking on that venture. so i'd assume those media outlets that broadcast within canada that lie on a consistent basis (i'm not sure of which, i don't watch much tv news) will have to shape up their act

They still have the power to single out a single news outlet, which is my point.

Anyways, the thread title is misleading. The OP is an idiot.

maybe if the title was "Foxs News essentially banned in Canada". that being said, the op explains the law and that fox news is no longer taking a venture into canada (wonder why?), so calling the tc an idiot is a bit od

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="Ravensmash"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] It distorts. Which gives a one sided believe the way I present it story. Period. Maybe you are okay with being given news under the bias of whatever outlet you read....I just don't like it. That's all.

I prefer slight bias to lies. There's quite obviously a difference between the two. If I choose to present a story in a manner which favours my chosen angle, then that is not the same as delivering misleading or factually incorrect information. You said that people should decide for themselves and research - that's fine if the story is factual and they choose to look deeper from other points of view. It is not acceptable if a news organisation is making up stuff. Although I'd argue that some news organisations (such as Fox at times) have such heavy spin that their articles border on falsehoods.

I don't think bias is acceptable as I just said. You do. We won't agree on that. I think news should be presented as facts and facts only with no spin. Because spin is misleading. And misleading is lying IMO.

Hmm, I don't think I outright claimed that bias is acceptable - of course it would be preferable if none existed. However it does exist (and is obviously looked at to ensure it's not grossly misleading). That doesn't mean that regulations can't be imposed on it, or to prevent outright lying in the media presented as fact. General spin in media is not on the same level as making stuff up.

can't stand main stream media. all owned by big corps and will NEVER show any news that could ever hurt them. and when they don't like things they will never show that side of news. That sir is not called a news station

Good for canada

I love mainstream media accusation. Fox News has millions of viewers. Fox News is mainstream.

Is this not what Obama said?

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."

The edit removes context, it's intentionally misleading. That's called 'quote mining'.

How could you possibly take what he said any other way?

He specifically was talking of infastructure, "that" pertaining to roads, bridges, the internet etc etc that is the point.. You conviently ignored when he said " The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together"... Its a pretty simple thing to understand, that we are not islands.. We depend off the infastructure.. Its retarded how some one could attack this.. And yes it was taken out of context.. Which his hilarious because Romney said something more or less the SAME during the Olympics.

I've found most news outlets to have some element of bias. It's almost impossible not to have it. Fox News is just very blatant and takes it to a higher degree.

Okay, just so we're clear they have to be examples of LYING. Not examples of getting something wrong, which every news station/anchor occaisionally does.

I'll wait.

SpartanMSU

Are you really that big of a moron? How about the massive "You didn't build that" Lie that they started and have been perpetuating. Are you so out of touch that you missed that?

What about MSNBC editing the Zimmerman tape? What about the NY Times completely making up an affair that McCain never had in the 2008 election? Fox News isn't the only one.

You won't ever catch me defending MSNBC. They suck too.

Good. That crap is right wing political propaganda and hate speech masquerading as news. They lie incessantly. And I hate the way they get gullible old people worked up into a frenzy. It should be banned everywhere.

The CBC should have been banned ages ago then. Though Canadians still have sun news which is a million times better than Fox news. But its funny, Canada has pretty much regulated speech on its airwaves. What can come of this? Governmental boards which decide who lies and who can talk who cannot talk on the air?

Story.

Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada's right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.

Now that there's comedy gold! It's too bad we don't have such a law down here, I think it'd put quite a few pundits under from both sides of the aisle!

Note: The US Channel can still be carried, they're just banned from domestic broadcast.

As I said the people should be intelligent enough to do their own research. No one should ever take the press as absolute. That's ANY outlet. Doing so is just lazy and skewed. And as I've told you before I find bias to be a form of lying anyway.

They are a corporation, and they should be held to the same standard as any other. If Ford comes out and says some car has a 5star rating, and gets 96mpg, it damn well better or they're going to be in a world of hurt.

You shouldn't have to fact check everything you see on the news, that is 'their' job.

Fox News doesn't lose sales/viewers, they make their bs look like the truth (to their audience), they willfully mislead/lie constantly. Why should there not be some expectation of 'truth'?

It certainly isn't good for our nation to have a misinformed voting population.

How is having a bias lying? pretty much everyone has a bias on a certain subject, whether it be an extreme or subtle bias. Going by your logic everyone must be a liar when disucussing certain topics.

A person can lean more on the liberal side or the conservative side of the political scale and still say things which are factual, despite leaning on one side more than the other. A person can have a bias but remain open-minded and defend their belief or bias with solid evidence or proof.

Good on Canada, although the thread title is misleading. Keeping voters properly informed and rational is key to maintaining any properly functioning democratic state, and certainly far more important than the ability for media companies to make profits off socially worthless propoganda.

Fox News doesn't lose sales/viewers, they make their bs look like the truth (to their audience), they willfully mislead/lie constantly. Why should there not be some expectation of 'truth'?

It certainly isn't good for our nation to have a misinformed voting population.

Are you a fan of social Darwinism?

So liars are to be banned from public speech?

(not granting this absolutely contemptable charge btw)

No individuals who lie, shouldn't be banned from public speech that's a stupid assertion.

And I've not even said that corporations should be outright banned either. They(corporations, not individual people) should be fined the hell out of them for each false/misleading outright lying of a story they run.

Corporations can't just run around willy nilly lying to people about their products or services.

I agree with this, there is a difference between putting a slant on a story and making up stories from scratch.

Even if it results in a fairer and more open press across America?

As I said the people should be intelligent enough to do their own research. No one should ever take the press as absolute. That's ANY outlet. Doing so is just lazy and skewed. And as I've told you before I find bias to be a form of lying anyway.

People shouldn't kill each other, that doesn't mean the police are not needed.

So are all other US news outlets banned also? They are just as bad and often worse.

Why are those even legal, they're such blatant scams... Clear regulation failures, or lack of regulation, across the board.
