Talent wise they are still better less technology = more talent. Just like Hendrix find another guitarist who can play with his teeth ... and nowadays not many bands come close to sounding good live as compared to there records.

powerful you say? gorguts, lykathea aflame, and pitbulls in the nursery are all very powerful sounding bands. if you want something more subtle, then check out gordian knot's emergent album.
