[QUOTE="MrGeezer"][QUOTE="theBeorn"] nothing wrong in saying BLACK.Nerkcon
That's just as "bogus", since most "black" people are actually "brown".

Hehe, I've heard that all the time when people start talking about racism at school. :P But why do people never point out that white people aren't white, we're peach?

Albinos, the true whites, must hate the fact that they get lumped in with you peaches.

Because, whites gave ourselves the title of being "white" versus blacks who were given the title "black" by whites.

He kind of does have a point. Besides, I've always found it weird calling someone who's black African American, whereas I would call other people white, Asian, Indian, or aboriginal.

[QUOTE="tocool340"]I hated being called African American as well. I'd whether be called brown guy....MuddVader
If I saw a black guy working at a department store and asked him "Hey, brown guy, wheres the ' '" I would most likely get my face all bloodied up.

I don't know about that. To me, it sound better than black because my skin color is not black as the night sky or tar pits. I think going and and bluntly saying "Hey black guy, where's the ' " to some random person will get you bloodied up to. I think walking to the person and saying "Excuse me sir/mam, can you show me where the' " work better than the other two methods.....

I still remember my high school Gov/Eco teacher refering to blacks that live on the continent of Africa as "African-Americans". One of those moments where you aren't quite sure what you just heard, then you facepalm when you continue to hear it.

wallymartin
My highschool teachers were better than my college teachers. My college art teacher said it is wrong to refer to them as blacks and is just as bad as saying the N word (not negro), but the other one. I mean I have never been offended when people call me the kid with blonde hair and blue eyes... It is a description.

"PC" is a term that's thrown around by people who don't like getting called out when they say something reprehensible.PannicAtack

I am noticing more and more that is true, but in this case I agree. As I am not from Africa i can not be an African-American. But people have been criticising the term for a while now.

Black and white? Should Asians be called yellow?

I think people should be categorized, if at all, by their place of birth. If you're born in America, you're American, and so on. About two years ago I was embarrassed for my classmates because our substitute's skin color was "white", yet she was from (*gasp*) South Africa. She said she was South African and everyone laughed, while I was in the corner face-palming.

Racial categories are just as important as any other characteristic because there are differences between them. How would I say, "[African Americans] are more likely to suffer from sickle cell anemia" if I can't use racial classifications? A mere racial classification isn't derogatory - it's just a description.

I don't really see what's wrong with the term "African-American". Why does that term get criticized so much?

People of African descent? People with African heritage? I think that would suffice. Calling someone African-American when they're not from Africa living in America (or vice-versa) is not accurate.

Although I think the terms aren't accurate, I can't say that it matters much to me either.

Ugh. Then call them black.... Everything seems to be offensive to someone, it's ridiculous.

Edit: For the record, "People of African descent" is still a racial category - just a very long winded one.

Yes, even that's fine with me. I'm not saying African-American is offensive, I'm just saying that inaccurate terms shouldn't be used.

EDIT: Again, I sort of take that back. There's more than just two skin colors. Look at the my post below.

If you are a brown colored skin human being I will call you black. You may call me white.

There we go. Problem solved.

There's more than just two categories. What do we intend to call people born in Asia. I'd just call them Asians, but from your logic we should do something different.

I think he has a point, I find it kind of stupid , I was watching BET and when they refer to British black people they call them African American. Its like No hes black and from England not America. When I go over to America I always have this argument with my Family as Im black and from England so I cant be african American. Im black. In the UK the form says Black/Black british.

I agree totally. And for all his insanity and antics I think ole Glenn actually has some pretty good ideas. Pity he discredits himself by acting like a fool.

I'm not called a german-american, why should black people be called african-americans? Glenn has a point, not all black people are from Africa.
