I was just in a conversation with my friend about indie music and I realized my library is pretty waifish (stupid computer story). Since I always see metal and rap threads I figured why not make an indie thread and see if I find any new music :P So I guess just post your favorite indie bands or songs. I'll start off with Sultan by What Made Milwaukee Famous.

I don't really listen to Indie but what I have on my iPod that I consider Indie: Bloc Party, Snow Patrol (well Snow Patrol are like Indie or Pop Rock... I say Pop Rock, to be honest).

Absolutely none of those bands are any good. "Indie" really isn't even a genre, it describes the kind of label the bands are on.

Sorry? Why wouldn't you post a good one then? But, anyway, nowadays indie is a genre of music.

That's like saying classic rock is a genre of music. It isn't, and insisting that it is will convince no one.

I don't see why people are strict with genres just because they want to be. Anyway, I'd prefer for the thread to not be about this, so please, if there's nothing productive to say, don't say it.

Well indie just means you are on an independent label, it isn't any particular sound, it is just a cIassification and not a genre. Indie could be rock, indie could be metal, indie could be country. I could give you rap music like this:

G-Side- "Strictly Buzinezz"

and it would be indie music...

I listened to Range Life by Pavement and thought that it was pretty good. Car by Built to Spill is also good. I was on the fence about Yo La Tengo, though. I don't think the voice is really in my taste. And I really enjoy Guided by Voices. You just helped flesh out my library a little bit, thanks :P

Because without the concept of genres, the realm of opinion would be anarchy. For instance, a website might list Rites of Spring as "emo". Another website might list Jimmy Eats World as "emo". If a man wants to listen to a band similar to Rites of Spring, he will do so by looking for other bands in the same genre. However, if he sees Jimmy Eats World listed as "emo", and decides to start listening to them, he will be sorely disappointed. Not to mention how much more difficult it would be to find music that he likes.

The Mountain Goats are pretty amazing. No Children, especially.

The American Analog Set also makes some good music. This song is probably my favorite by them.

Just because it happens doesn't mean it's right. I've heard people say "ACDC is seriously awesome, brah!" tons of times, it doesn't mean they're right.

Yes, it takes its name from Independant which refers to the labels the bands are on, but it refers to the DIY ethics of the band. It's reflected in the way the band tours, records and distributes their music but also in their sound.

Read "Our Band Could Be Your Life". That will give you some insight into Indie Rock.

Just like many other genres, the name started by describing something about the bands, then became a generic term. Just like alternative, popular, or shoegazer, the name now describes a type of music. Just because a band is labeled 'pop' doesn't mean that they are very popular. Just because a band is labeled 'shoegazer' doesn't mean that they look at their shoes the entire show. It's the same with indie. It started by describing bands that were on a small or no label, and now it describes a type of music.

Well, you can still say independent music, while people will take that a different way than if you say indie rock.

I think Indie is simply a word that means two things. It could mean independent music from labels, or it could mena a certain sound.
