This saying has never made much sense to me. I kinda get the message it's trying to convey but still...

The point of the phrase is that it is the people themselves who kill people, and blaming the tools people use to kill others is not the solution.

If I stabbed someone with a knife, and killed them you would say that I killed that person. Now if I took a gun and shot the person instead that means the gun did it? The saying makes perfect sense, to say that the gun did it is just shirking the blame on an inanimate object.

Even if the tools make it infinitely easier to do so?

They also protect people. There are many cases where private citizens having guns has saved lives. Criminals having guns doesn't stop them from being criminals... and keeping guns out of the hands of private citizens just gives them one less way of defending themselves.

I don't see the benefit of taking guns away from private citizens when it is far easier to get a gun on the black market and it doesn't require registration and tracking numbers.

Sure, but the tools used are still part of the equation. Just like it is easier to kill someone with a car than with a bicycle, guns undoubtedly are part of the high murder rate in this country. In the completely hypothetical situation that there wasn't a single gun in the nation, I'm sure that the 8,000 to 10,000 gun deaths per year would not transform to 8,000 to 10,000 stabbing deaths instead.

There are lots of guns in Canada and Russia too... but those country's murder rates aren't anywhere near that of the States. Saying guns are the cause of the high murder rate is fallacious.

And taking guns away from private citizens doesn't stop criminals from getting them. No marginally intelligent criminal is going to buy a gun from a retailer to commit a crime. Anti-gun proponents don't consider the fact that legally purchased firearms are one of the easiest to track things in the world, since they are all registered and have a definitive "fingerprint" they leave on the bullets.

And those people who walk out into a crowded area with a legally purchased firearm and open fire on random victims aren't trying to get away... they usually want to commit suicide and take as many people with them as they can.

As for statistics, I actually think the states with the laxer gun control are the ones with lower gun-related crime rates. Because a criminal is going to be more deterred if they don't know who could possibly be carrying a gun. Which is why I fully advocate private citizens should have full access to concealed-carry licenses (which require background checks and training of course). A mugger with a knife staring down the barrel of a .44 magnum isn't going to want to continue his endeavour. I could guarantee that.

Again, guns certainly make it easier to kill someone. That's shown by your last example, where the mugger knows he is going to be killed if he continues. Knives are ubiquitous. Anyone can get a knife. Yet, gun murders outweigh knife murders in this country by 4 to 1 every year. I could modify the statement to say "Cars don't kill people, people kill people". Again, though, it is quite difficult to imagine 40,000 people dying each year in this country by being in horse and buggy accidents if cars were illegal.Engrish_Major

You didn't even address any of my points, you just repeated your rhetoric.

You have yet to prove that outlawing guns completely would have any effect on violent crime... especially considering the fact I have stated twice already that legal guns are not the source of the majority of gun-related crime. Which is a fact.

I don't know if an armed populace is actually safer or not. It seems there's evidence going both ways. However, I do know for an absolute certainty that having a weapon makes me safer.

I dont disagree with the saying. I just understand why people would have a more negative view of guns than they would about cars.

That just helps the point. Something intended for killing (if you want to classify guns like that) kill less than something that isn't. That's a good thing for gun ownership.
