An Oklahoma City woman says the gym she joined made her stop using some of its equipment because she was too fat.

Sandra Ruiz says she joined Mademoiselle Fitness Center to work off the extra weight she gained while she was pregnant with her now 5-month-old son, according to Oklahoma City's News 9.

But during one of her visits, she was told by a gym employee to get off a stationary bike she was riding because she was overweight.

Discrimination or are they just looking out for the equipment?

It's her fault for being so fat. If she's a danger to the equipment then why allow her on it?

You've got to see from their point of view as well, they can't afford new equipment all the time.

Makes sense, if she is too big she could break it, hurt herself then sue. They are just looking out for her health and their wallets.

Maybe it's just me but I doubt she got that fat just by being pregnant. It may seem unfair by the gym is probably trying to avoid lawsuits.

She's huge; you don't gain that much weight from pregnancy. She was either already fat or just completely let herself go during her pregnancy. But that's not the point. If she can potentially damage the equipment, then I believe they have the right to ask her not to use it.

Yup.. all that fat is from having a baby.. suuurrrreee. Can't blame the club, if shes gonna break their **** they have to protect it. Although if they aren't going to let her use the EQ, then they should let her out of her contract.

According to the gym owners, the fact that there was a weight limit on some of the equipment was in the membership contract, or at the very least one of the first pieces of information this woman received. If this is true (and I won't say either way), and she did know, then she's just being an attention whore.

I am sure that equipment is in general designed with a certain maximum capacity. If done politely and due to concern of possible injury and equipment breaking I see nothing wrong in what they were doing. Being they were a gym a simple add on would be to explain any other number of possible cardio activities she could have done to lose weight..

I think it is fair to stop her from using a machine if she is a danger to herself, the machine, or the people around her. They didn't tell her not to come back again. If she gets hurt then she sues or they protect her and she sues. People need to understand that their are safety guidelines for a reason.

So she should be allowed to break equipment because she is overweight? She should cause harm to herself and possibly others because she is overweight?

Any piece of equipment is going to have a maximum weight limit. Of course, I don't know if the woman exceeded the manufacturer's stated limit or not, but I'll assume that to be the case. They not only have to take their equipment into consideration, but also the safety of their customers.

Really if the machine looked like it was about to break, I would have told her to get off to. I can just imagine this poor bike creaking and wobbling from the weight and she tried to pedal. If it would have broken and she would have been hurt, the gym could get sued. A smart employee would have stopped that possible lawsuit.

the equipment comes with a weight limit for a reason. not only could she damage the equipment, but she could get damaged in the process as well.

That or they are afraid the floor will shake so much from her movement that it will distract the other gym goers from there routines :P In all seriousness, I am with the gym. Gym equipment can get mighty expensive and they just don't want to take chances.

Yeah, I don't think pregnancy is the whole story here. I am guessing she was pretty heavy before hand. Now I must admit, that has to be pretty damn embarrassing, but I would say that she is probably a risk to their equipment.

if it was public they would be obliged but since it is a private club they look out for theirselves first and have to be careful.

If something happened the first thing would be they would be in court as defendants.

it may happen anyway because almost everyone is a ****ing victim these days.

what ever happened to having a little responsibility for your own actions and condition.
