I'm sure their is alcoholism in the U.K, but I dont think its alcoholism until it freaking runs their life, a drink wont kill you.

Film-Guy

Congratulations, you don't understand alcoholism.

So If I drink a pint of guiness at a pub that makes me an alcoholic? There is a huge difference between casual drinking and alcoholism. When its a real problem and you think you need it and it runs your life then its alcoholism, if you have the occasional drink casually then its not.

Have you ever heard the term "functional alcoholic"?

Ever known someone who has to keep a bottle of liquor in their car so that they can drink during their lunch break, otherwise they start developing withdrawal symptons that HURT their ability to hold a job?

Alcoholism is NOT dependent on whether or not you have a good life, whether or not you have liver disease, or whether or not you're living in the gutters begging for change in order to buy booze. Alcoholism is ADDICTION to alcohol. A NEED for alcohol. Many alcoholics have good jobs and have good relationships, but are only able to do so BECAUSE they are constantly drinking. That is a fairly common trait of many addictions, the need to do it just to function normally. This is especially apparent with alcohol, given that alcohol is one of the few drugs where people can become so addicted that QUITTING can kill them. People can become so dependent on alcohol that they ****ING DIE if they stop. Alcoholism is a horrible affliction, and it's just plain stupid and irresponsible to suggest that people suffering from it are being irresponsible by abstaining from it completely.

You really dont seem to be following what I am saying here at all... I have known alcoholics before, I know the difference between alcoholic and somebody who has a drink every once in a while. You seem to think that anybody who drinks is an alcoholic in some way, that is simply not true. I apoligize if I am reading you wrong, but it seems every time I say casual drinker you contradict it with some other kind of alcoholism.

Casual drinkers are not the issue.

I don't think that casual drinkers are alcoholics, I SIMPLY DON'T CARE ABOUT CASUAL DRINKERS.

I was ALWAYS talking exclusively about alcoholics. I love to drink, I drink every night, and I am a little bit drunk right now, but I don't even classify myself as an alcoholic, because I do NOT need alcohol, and I have SEEN alcoholics. And as far as alcohol consumption goes, I'm pretty much a lightweight compared to most of my coworkers and acquaintances, and I would suspect very few of them of being alcoholics either.

But I wasn't talking about me, I was never talking about drunk people at parties, I was never talking about someone who likes a few glasses of wine with a good dinner. I was talking about ALCOHOLICS. South Park's message applied to ALCOHOLICS. Randy Marsh thought that he was an ALCOHOLIC, and the big message was "don't quit, just drink a little bit".

And that is NOT the kind of ****ing advice that you give ALCOHOLICS.

That's ALL I'm saying. That particular episode of South Park was stupid not because it dealt with drinking, but because it dealt with ALCOHOLISM, and its "solution" was absolutely moronic.

If you think that I have some kjind of vendetta against alcohol, you are VERY freaking mistaken. I LOOOOVE my alcohol, and yes, when I'm drinking socially, I'm usually among the first of the people in my party to stop and say "I've had enough".

I can have a few drinks without losing control. A lot of people CAN'T. And those people need to not be drinking AT ALL.

Once, with the way the portrayed the crazy athiest people. I understand perfectly well that there are some psycotic athiests with naziesque views; and that it wasn't even aimed at my particular people, but it still left me feeling negative for some reason.

Other than that, it voices opinions 80% in line with what I believe, especially on organised religion and sexual-phobia.

actually this whole thing is about a casual drinker. Randy Marsh isn't an alcoholic, he was pulled over for a DWI and was forced to go to AA by court and at the meeting he had to say he was an alcoholic and that he had a disease.

So yes. Stan telling his father do drink like a responsible adult is good advice.

Ok if you had stated you didnt care about casual drinkers before that would have made this alot easier. Randy was only TOLD he was an alcoholic by the AA. I don't think that episode only applied to alcoholics, it applied to pretty much everyone who drinks socially, that means you too. I don't see why it can only apply to alcoholics.

Film-Guy

It applies particularly well to alcoholics because he THOUGHT he was an alcoholic. Alcoholic or not, his drinking caused enough of a problem that he was AT an AA meeting.

THAT'S the point. His alcohol use was hurting him. It was causing problems with the law, getting him into dangerous situations, and he THOUGHT that he was an alcoholic. And then they sweep all that under the rug by telling him "just don't drink so much".

When ANY drug use is causing problems, legal or not, you need to evaluate your use of drugs. If you're getting in trouble with the law because of alcohol use, or if you're losing jobs by failing pot tests, you need to evaluate what you're doing wrong. It was Randy Marsh's decision that he has an alcohol problem and would be better off not drinking at all. Some people might get arrested for weed and decide that smoking pot isn't worth it. Whatever.

The point is that that's ALWAYS a personal ****ing decision. And NO ONE but the user has any right to decide that they need to keep on using.

It's ALWAYS going to be Randy Marsh who gets arrested for Randy Marsh driving drunk. He bears the consequences, it's his freaking decision, and that's it.

I know people who don't drink at all. And I sure as **** don't try to get them to come out and drink with me, or tell them that they're ****ing cowards by not drinking. It's simply none of my ****ing business. They think it's wrong for them, and who the **** am I to tell them otherwise?

For example, I recall one episode where the "big message" was that alcoholics shouldn't abstain from drinking.

I don't remember that one.

they didnt say that. they said that alcoholics dont have a disease that makes them drink they just need to stop drinking.

Wrong.

Randy Marsh, the "alcoholic" DID stop drinking. And the big message was that he needs to start drinking again, just not as much.

That if you stop doing something that is a destructive influence in your life, then that thing wins. Now that I think about it, this episode was EXTREMELY similar to the Head In The Sand episode in that both episodes were advocating doing destructive **** just for the sake of "not losing".

And honestly, I can imagine people in junior high adhering to such a philosophy, but it's downright PATHETIC to see that kind of attitude coming from adults.

It's like, I used to know this homeless kid. One day he got a sweet deal. Someone took pity on him and let him stay at his place rent free. So anyway, the homeless kid is asleep and his host tells him to rake up the leaves in the yard. Homeless kid then starts throwing a freaking tantrum saying stuff like "no man tells me what to do". The host then tells him to get the hell out of the house. Homeless kid then pulls out a knife on general principle, at which point the host takes the knife away from the kid and beats the living **** out of him.

So I'm sitting there listening to the homeless kid and he's like "no man tells me what to do" and "I ain't nobody's *****" and "screw that, I'm a MAN, not a slave."

Then he has the nerve to ****ing ask me for money.

And I'm like, "**** you kid. I just got done mopping feces off the floor. And I got paid to do it. I am my boss's *****, and in return he gives me money. I mopped up feces. Not you, ME. And that money was paid to ME for a service that I did. Why should I give you anything? You're obviously willing to live in a ****ing gutter and get the **** beat out of you just to not feel like you've lost, and you can do that all you like. And that's why you're broke and homeless, while a "*****-ass sellout" like me has a job, a warm bed, doesn't get robbed and beaten up every night, and is now eating a delicious lunch while you're going hungry."

Dude, who gives a flying **** if "x wins"?

Seriously, this whole "if I concede even a little bit, x wins" attitude is just ****ing stupid.

Who gives a flying **** if alcohol wins by you not drinking any more? I don't have anything to prove to Jack ****ing Daniels, I need to improve my ****ing life. If getting rid of Jack Daniels is an improvement, then the hell with him. Only a ****ing idiot would even care for a ****ing second whether or not he "wins".

Yeah, whatever. I can ":defeat" Jack Daniels while I'm in a ****ing gutter getting soaked in rain. Whatever man. I'm an adult. And being an adult requires being somebody's ****, just like Trey Parker and Matt Stone are Comedy Central's *****, and aren't even allowed to air uncensored material of their own show. They get Comedy Central to approve what gets shown, and then they go home to their nice homes and deposit their big fat paychecks.

That's life. ****ing deal with it. Everyone's gotta deal with that same ****, so don't whine to me about it. Don't like it, get another freaking job.

Why are you getting so worked up about a tv show?

Like what?

For example, I recall one episode where the "big message" was that alcoholics shouldn't abstain from drinking.

I don't remember that one.

A couple of times, and mainly the grossout portions. Any of their other topics really aren't too offensive.
