Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which people, either when falling asleep or wakening, temporarily experience an inability to move. It is a transition state between wakefulness and rest characterized by complete muscle atonia(muscle weakness). It can occur at sleep onset or upon awakening, and it is often associated with terrifying visions,

Damn this shit is terrifying as hell , i've experienced it for like 6times and it's damn horrifying , it's like sth is on your chest and suffocates you and you're in chains , you can't move , you scream but no one hears you ....it's the absolute definition of "nightmare" ! and it just happened to me ....

Have you ever been in such a death-close situation ?

I haven't had it in real life but I've had 2 dreams where I am paralyzed in my bed. The reason I knew the first one was a dream is because I was in my old room in my old house that I haven't lived in for a few years. I was in bed and able to speak and tried to yell out for help but my voice was muffled and slowly the yells became silent and I had a very bad feeling that something was watching me.

The second one happened a few days ago and in the dream I was in bed and felt something push me face first up against the wall in my bed and I could not move. Mentally I was going crazy trying to move and finally I rolled off my bed onto the floor and as I fell the blinds to my window were open and I saw a black figure standing outside the window. When I landed on the floor I instantly became paralyzed and I didn't land in a position to see the window but I was really freaking out. I woke up a few seconds after being on the floor and I was back in my bed with the blinds to my window shut. I never sleep with the blinds open.

@Lance2500 I had a similar one to your second dream, i was half-sleep and alone at home , heard the opening of the door and after a few seconds later a black figure passed right in front of my eyes , was scared to death and finally he left and i woke up .....

@toast_burner Have searched the internet and the potential reason is the stress that you have in your life u know the more u are under stress and pressure the more it's possible to have this nightmare and i can confirm this theory based on my experience...

Ever since I started taking anti-convulsants a little over a decade ago I very rarely dream. I'm talking maybe once every couple months.

I know they say we always dream when we are in REM sleep, but thank God I don't remember them. Most of them would be recurring zombie related dreams FWIW.

As for the phenomena, if I have experienced it, I don't remember.

No, but I've experienced "night chills" on a few occasions. That stuff has scared me awake to the point where my heart is rapidly beating, goosebumps all over my body, and some unknown fear of whatever I was dreaming of.

There's actually an abnormality where people have the opposite. They move and thrash about in their sleep - in response to their dreams. That can be quite dangerous. I believe - in a normal person - there is someway the body disconnects so that you don't move around while you dream.

The first time I experienced it was when I was about 5 years old and thinking it was really interesting. I've changed my mind now, though; when I'm paralyzed I usually experience being dragged out of bed and/or hearing white noise, or whatever I should call it. Some times I also see silhouettes and hear loud breathing. Luckily, I'm able to tell the difference between reality and "dreaming", so it doesn't freak me out too much, haha.

All the time, at least once every week or two. Never had any visions/nightmares associated with it though.

I'm getting better at recognizing and forcing myself out of it, but it takes a lot of effort.

I had an out of body experience a couple of times. I stood up did something in my house and when i looked at the sofa, i saw myself laying there.

I went back to my body , so layed down in the sofa, i woke up and then i had sleep paralysis.

Very frightening, especially when i saw the movie insidious years later. I never gave it too much thought till i saw that movie. Then I looked up people who were actively seeking for this experience and apparently there's a method to do that. Some saw ghosts but they can't detach you from your body apparently.

I rather not think about it too much honestly, gives me the creeps.

it's not as unique as you think, when you look up on youtube, a lot of people have methods to do this proactively

I didn't try it anymore though and it was a 6-7 years ago when i was working day & night.

I hope it has something to do with sleep deprivation

because after it happened , let's say i wasn't so sure that ghosts didn't exists anymore and to this day ghost stories scare me more than before that happened.

The sleep paralysis wasn't fun either, as you sure know.

Do you do any drugs?

Not that I know of...

@evildead6789: Isn't that just you dreaming you're seeing yourself? Used to happen to me all the time when I was a kid. I'd dream I was watching myself sleep. Of course my dead grandma was always next to me watching me sleep too. Just stupid dreams in my case.

@Makhaidos: I'd think that after a while you'd just recognise it and say "aw, not this shit again...."

Yes. There was a time in my life when I had it almost every day. Not knowing what it was didn't help on making it less terrifying. Seeing the bright side of it though I had the strangest and most memorable dreams ever during that time and, also, it encouraged me to try lucid dreaming and I got pretty good at it so I could control my dreams and do some pretty cool stuff.

Here is an artistic depiction of sleep paralysis done by Henry Fuseli. pretty accurate.

I have before. I highly disliked it, so I decided to learn how to lucid dream and awaken my body. It took some effort, but I succeeded.

Once when I was a kid, tried to yell out to mum but couldn't talk or move. Scared the hell out of me, thought maybe a ghost was on me.

I never found it frightening (though, like I said, I never had visions associated with it), more of an annoyance.

It makes you feel extremely weak, like you COULD move, but every part your body weighs 100x more than normal, so no matter how hard you try, it's just not enough.

I've also had times where certain limbs were paralyzed, but I could move the rest of my body.

Once, it was the worst thing to ever happen in my life.

It feel like the devil is standing at the foot of your bed making eye contact with the feeling of Aliens scratching at your window.

You are frozen, your body does nothing, only your eyes work (if you have the paralysis with you eyes opened, which make the experience 100x horrible), you dont hear anything but that EEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise and you cant even open your mouth to yell out. All the darkness of your room gets darker, and the room feels like is getting filled up with demons. And you wish you could cut off your legs becuz it feels like at any point either the devil or the aliens are about to grab you by your legs.

The worst part is, when you think its over, its not over. It does not feel nothing like dreaming or having a nightmare. Maybe if it were with your eyes closed you could just mistake it for a really horrible nightmare, but when it happens with your eyes opens and are alertly watching it you know for a fact that shit just happened live and not in your head.

You cant go back to sleep and you'll end up counting the hours till dawn with all the lights on in your house, praying for the sun light to crack.

@evildead6789No i don't , when it happened a few days ago i i didn't had enough sleep and there was much going in my head , so i guess for me the first reason below can be applied :

Reasons linked to sleep paralysis

- Irregular sleeping schedule

- Stress and fatigue

- Other problems associated with sleep like narcolepsy or leg and hand cramps

- Use of medications or substance abuse

- Chronic sleep deprivation

- Mood disorders/ sleep apnea

Happen many times Since I was a kid....

and still happen untill today ..... now I'm 40 ...

sometimes I can go into sleep paralysis with my own will.

I never exactly learn how to perform it but it already works many times.

Usually when I turn on the ceiling fan, light out (but some balcony light reflection from my window or during full moon on clear sky) and a very calm atmosphere after watching some disturbing movie. (it usually works on fear situation)

and usually I face the wall on my left side.. (to get the impression that someone is behind watching me)

and the result might vary ... from feet gets numb, eyes wide open facing a turning ceiling fan .. and Dream within Dream.... (sometimes suddenly my younger brother is talking to me as a kid although now he's 36 and live far away .... or some purple thingy that i don't understand)

*************************

About my brother ..... when we were a kid ... he use to fool around at night (we share room) and held my eye open with his fingers...... then he said "ignore everything ... just go to sleep"

and the result is ... I sleep with my eyes open ... and still able to watch the ceiling.

Maybe, unsure if it was a dream or not of some woman crawling up and resting her head on my chest since I likely slept afterwards. Leaning towards it being a dream though.

I've experienced it about a handful of times when I was about thirteen years old. Haven't experienced it since, if I recall correctly. It's quite terrifying, but after it happens the first couple of times, you aren't as horrified as you were initially because you know it's going to end - though it's still an unpleasant experience.

I'm in the same boat. It's not always something you get terrifying imagery with, or imagery at all. Quite frequently all I see is, well, my apartment. I see myself falling off the bed or couch I'm on while trying to make myself move, but I've been through it enough to know I'm actually still on the couch/bed and to ignore that. Most people experience this stuff one once or twice in a lifetime, if that. So I've often wondered whats different about people who have it constantly happen to them.

I still can't convince my older brother thats what happened to him that time he claims he had a "demon sitting on his chest" when he was a teen.

I think I've gotten it. Just about a week ago, but does hearing deep demonic voices count? No frightening images, just creepy voices. Couldnt really tell what it said though.

my brother used to get it a lot, but he focuses on something like moving his toes and his whole body snaps out of it pretty quickly

from friends I've known who've gotten it they've not had visions or anything but they say the inability to control their breathing is very scary

I think visions depend on the personality of the person effected, I hear the more paranoid people are to a presence in the room coupled with the inability to move, plus the brain being partially in some kind of sleep state, that's probably most responsible for the visions of things like dark shadowy figures
