As I write, it has been only a few hours since our dog of 12 years was hit by a truck. She was killed instantly. So, OT, have you had a pet die? If so, how did you cope? I'm dealing with it right now. By writing and talking about it.

Yes, I have. Miy dog died 4 years ago from her spleen bursting at age 14. It was hard to deal with for a long time, but I found surrounding yourself with family is the best and to remember your pet. That's what I did

I'm sorry about your dog. :( My first dog had to be put down when I was 8. It was hard. We got a new dog about a month later, though, and that really helped, I think. It surely wouldn't help everyone, but it did help me. That dog is 10 now, and I worry about losing her. She's still healthy though, so I ought to just enjoy her while she's around. :)

I've had 2 dogs and 1 cat die over the course of my life. The two dogs died of natural causes, the cat died because there was a person poisoning cats on my street to reduce the number of strays. I don't really remember how I dealt with the deaths though, they all occurred several years ago.

I wish you the best during your time of mourning. My cat [Dakota] died about 3 years ago and my dog [Bear] died last year. I've gotten some more cats and dogs since then and I love them very much.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I losta dog when I was 8 years old (hit by a car), but my dad took the time to talk with me about it, so that helped me to get through it a lot faster.

it may sound odd, but I think you should get a new dog.
I imagine getting a new pet that you can focus your time and affection on would help, though of course talking about it with others and keeping yourself occupied and spending time around family can help too.

it sucks but not as much as having your father pass, time will pass. keeping active and living life is the best advice i can give to cope with your loss and do not try to avoid or deny what has happened

My kitty when I was about 10 got hit by a car, my friend and her friend come to my door and tell me "I think your cat is dead over there". I sat in my room and I cried all day because I couldn't go look, I had to wait for my mom to get home to go see. Worst day ever. My first cat died when I was 3 or so, just wandered away and died. I had another kitty, I think he got hit by a car too, but I don't remember. He found us so we kept him. I don't really remember how I coped, because I was so young, but if my cat that I have now died, I'd be completely devastated and I'd probably just sedate myself so that I don't have to wake up.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your dog. :( Anyway, I've had both my cats die of old age on me. It's hard and everything, but you eventually move on. It's about time I get another cat, though.

Yeah, my pet rock recently died

Apparently when I took him out to play in the garden about 12 years ago I forgot to take him back in and found out last week that he has mostly eroded away by now.

I had a cat who was hit by a car a while back. We also had his brother as a pet as well, and I think he was more depressed than any of us. It's not something you can consciously do something to get over it; you just eventually move on.

Yeah, I have.

One of my dogs died of old age, he was 17. My other dog we chose to put down because she had lung cancer and my dad didn't want her to be in pain. She was 14 :(

We had our dog of 13 years put down about a year ago and it was a tough time, still think I can see/hear her for a split second sometimes, but the memories don't hurt much anymore. I just think of the good times.

I know. I thnk that getting another dog would help me a lot, but my mom and dad had said sometime ago that "when she goes, no more pets." So, I'll have to get one of my own when I move out. We had two cats when I was muchyounger, but they both ran away; the male came back later in the winter but then he ran off, and we have no idea what happened. We had this god for 12 years. She lived out her years well.

I have lost around 10 dogs in the span of one night due to their mother rolling on them. Other than that I had to give away all my dogs due to my new home not being pet friendly.

My well I don't know how to spell the type of bird he is, but it was a bird. I don't actually know what he died from I think it was old age. But yeah, I just sat around for a whilst for days. We ended up getting a new bird (he's still alive atm)

My parents used to deal with most of them, but there has been two Ihad to deal with myself. Such as placing my dead bulldog into two plastic bin liners and bury him in the backyard, old age basically. Also leading a horse up to the trailer to be shot then have it nearly collapse on top of me, that was due to arthritis in it's legs getting too severe, old age again.

Yes, and it is one of the hardest things to deal with. When I was young I had a kitten, who got outside and got into our neighbors yard who apparently put some sort of fertilizer on his lawn. I think what happened is that my cat got poisoned from it, so we had to take him to get put down since he was so sick :(

Also my grandmother's dog that I pretty much grew up being around throughout my entire childhood died this past summer

What's scary is that her cat died exactly 1 year prior

I still can't think of the pets I've lost without getting a little teared up....

We got 2 cats, one got hit by a car after about 4 years so we got 2 more cats and when mum's partner left he took them with him. The first cat (now 10 years old) has recently been rehoused with an elderly couple. So I've lost all my pets in one way or another, losing the cat that died was the hardest though as he was the best pet in the world

I've had a number of pets die, including a 20-year-old cat my mom had before she had me. I'm pretty... emotionless when they die, too. I just move on.

through my life? a handful. My cat died of old age, the family dog died at age 11, and had a Degu that took the ticket.

I cope with it by thinking about the life they had, and the memorys I have of them, it might be a bit hurtful at first, but I have untill now realised that they were loved alot, and I think that they were very happy.

most people consider thier pets as part of the family, I guess I sort of do too, but everything dies at some point, and most animals have a relatively short lifespan, so you knwo it will happen some day, when that day comes It can be a great comfort knowing that you did all you could to give those lovely furballs (or other) as good a life as you could

dog - put down on St Patricks day dog - died of natural causes on halloween cat - run over cat - run over rabbit - run over horse - natural causes horse - natural causes cat - half eaten, then put down cat - died (too young) cat - died (too young) cat - run over lessee... that doesn't count the animals that have run away or just disappeared

Have had so many cats die on me I lost count. My parents refuse to spay or neuter the cats, so they continue to breed and at one point in time we had over 20 something cats. I dont remember what happened to them all, but we ended up with like 5 cats, then 2 cats, then 1 female who had kittens and then we had like 5 again, then they all grew up and ran off or got eaten by owls or eagles. We had 2 female cats last year who ended up pregnant and had kittens, but it was in the middle of winter .... and they were in the garage. :( it is hardest to bury the lil baby kittens. We got one new cat cause my kids wanted a kitty. He is a boy. Hes not fixed, but he is a big part of the family now. Hes even allowed inside the house (amazingly!). My first dog, i had him for 16 years, and he died from old age. He was hit by a car when he was a puppy, and ended up getting his rear left leg amputated. When I first got together with my now ex husband, he got me a puppy for valentines day/the day he asked me out basically. It was a border collie/husky. I got pregnant and the dog kept jumping up and pressing both paws into my belly, which would give me contractions so I could physically not take care of her. This made my ex husband mad, so he got rid of her in the worst way ever :( ... ....*... cries.*.

I had one of my dogs die right in front of my face, it was very sad by the way he died.
