As I write, it has been only a few hours since our dog of 12 years was hit by a truck. She was killed instantly. So, OT, have you had a pet die? If so, how did you cope? I'm dealing with it right now. By writing and talking about it.

I've had 2 dogs and 1 cat die over the course of my life. The two dogs died of natural causes, the cat died because there was a person poisoning cats on my street to reduce the number of strays. I don't really remember how I dealt with the deaths though, they all occurred several years ago.
I wish you the best during your time of mourning. My cat [Dakota] died about 3 years ago and my dog [Bear] died last year. I've gotten some more cats and dogs since then and I love them very much.
Sorry to hear about your loss.
I losta dog when I was 8 years old (hit by a car), but my dad took the time to talk with me about it, so that helped me to get through it a lot faster.
it may sound odd, but I think you should get a new dog.
I imagine getting a new pet that you can focus your time and affection on would help, though of course talking about it with others and keeping yourself occupied and spending time around family can help too.
It does indeed help. It fills the void somewhatit may sound odd, but I think you should get a new dog.

Yeah, my pet rock recently died
Apparently when I took him out to play in the garden about 12 years ago I forgot to take him back in and found out last week that he has mostly eroded away by now.

lol, how can you forgot such a precious rock :P
I had to put my dog down about a year ago. It was the worst day of my life because she really was my best friend.
oh yeah back on the topic, yep in my life 6 cats , my recent cat ( his name was lisbon ) died of poisoning, well my neighbor poisoned my cat, well i cant blame him because lisbon killed 2 of his precious love birds....
Yeah, I have.
One of my dogs died of old age, he was 17. My other dog we chose to put down because she had lung cancer and my dad didn't want her to be in pain. She was 14 :(
We had our dog of 13 years put down about a year ago and it was a tough time, still think I can see/hear her for a split second sometimes, but the memories don't hurt much anymore. I just think of the good times.

I know. I thnk that getting another dog would help me a lot, but my mom and dad had said sometime ago that "when she goes, no more pets." So, I'll have to get one of my own when I move out. We had two cats when I was muchyounger, but they both ran away; the male came back later in the winter but then he ran off, and we have no idea what happened. We had this god for 12 years. She lived out her years well.
My parents used to deal with most of them, but there has been two Ihad to deal with myself. Such as placing my dead bulldog into two plastic bin liners and bury him in the backyard, old age basically. Also leading a horse up to the trailer to be shot then have it nearly collapse on top of me, that was due to arthritis in it's legs getting too severe, old age again.
Yes, and it is one of the hardest things to deal with. When I was young I had a kitten, who got outside and got into our neighbors yard who apparently put some sort of fertilizer on his lawn. I think what happened is that my cat got poisoned from it, so we had to take him to get put down since he was so sick :(
Also my grandmother's dog that I pretty much grew up being around throughout my entire childhood died this past summer
What's scary is that her cat died exactly 1 year prior
I still can't think of the pets I've lost without getting a little teared up....
I have lost a bunch of fish, my hamster and a bird. All do to natural causes and yes it was pretty hard to deal with each time :(
through my life? a handful. My cat died of old age, the family dog died at age 11, and had a Degu that took the ticket.
I cope with it by thinking about the life they had, and the memorys I have of them, it might be a bit hurtful at first, but I have untill now realised that they were loved alot, and I think that they were very happy.
most people consider thier pets as part of the family, I guess I sort of do too, but everything dies at some point, and most animals have a relatively short lifespan, so you knwo it will happen some day, when that day comes It can be a great comfort knowing that you did all you could to give those lovely furballs (or other) as good a life as you could
yes, my beautiful gizmo (cat) passed away by choking on its own vomit. Its vey traumatic, best to stay with family
I had 2 pets die. One was a gerbil I had when I was in first grade. I also had a shi'tzu that died, but she lived for 17 years.
well, most of those were when i was living at my parent's house only two have died since i moved out: the dog put down on st. patrick's day (she had cancer) and the cat that was et. The cat was et while at my mother-in-law's while i was in hawaii getting married >_>Jandurin, your pet priviledges have been revoked.
