He is 46 years old, 6'2 and weighs 20 stone (280 pounds)

I've told him that I think he will be dead within 10 years due to a heart attack but he just wont listen. How do I convince him to lose weight?

People are arrogant. Unless something really inspires them I don't think its possible to change an old persons mind :P.

I wouldn't consider a 46 year old guy to be "old".

Introduce him to the Twinkie Diet. :P

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html

Excerpt ...

Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds
By Madison Park, CNN

(CNN) -- Twinkies. Nutty bars. Powdered donuts.

For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.

The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.

Get a gun and shoot him in the abdomen. He'll lose a lot of weight in the hospital but you'll go to jail for attempted murder. Hope that helps.

You can't, I got my mother to lose 30lbs and my step father just doesn't have the will power, my mother did it but there are certain things I can't get her to stop eating/drinking. I have family arguments all the time because of trying to help them, but they learn not to ask/tell me to buy them something I won't eat because I won't.

Perhaps you should stop judging people.

I think you should become a vegan, you will live longer and hurt no animals.

Show him something, like a video or an article on the internet, that might scare him in to losing weight. But it's something that he had to decidefor himself...

He should do that right after his stepdad dies from a obesity-induced heart attack.

Fight him - it is the only way. Upon realizing that he's let his condition drop to the point where he can't even take his own kid, he'll go all Rocky and beat your ass in a month.

You're lying, vegans hurt ALL animals they only eat plants and that reduces the oxygen on this earth and increases carbon dioxide which equals death to all living things. :P

I don't hurt the animals I eat, they are already dead. And I maintain a healthy diet. And I'm not judging my step dad, I'm worried about him. I've told him the risks and it didn't work, so I tired being totally blunt and that didn't work. Where on earth did you get the impression I was judging him?

If you still live with him, try to convince him to come running with you during mornings or evenings. You'll both get exercise and be able to bond with eachother.

Nothing you do/say will change anything - point blank, that's all that matters.

However, something that I do find works with many men is that they work hard to maintain themselves so they can get/keep girls. If his wife is starting to find him unattractive, that could motivate him. I know many bigger guys who starting working out just so they could woo a girl. They're very motivating.

Yeah, I know I'll disregard the feelings of my family and become morbidly obese to commit a slowed suicide once I reach my 40s.

Let's say he starts working out because of the feelings of his family, do you know what's going to happen? He's going to quit after a few months because of that ****-tastic resolve. People need REAL motivation. Feelings from family members are not going to get him in shape.

Losing a lot of weight is absolute torture. Sorry, but no relative of mine is worth putting myself through hell for months to years. It's a common feeling. There are many other over weight people I know who tried to lose weight because someone they cared about was worried about their health. Didn't really work out. It's just not a good enough reason to go through that.

Show him pictures of what he looks like, both inside and out: use the shock factor. Use this diet plan: 1) Mon-Fri Eat healthy 2) Sat-Sun Have whatever you want. It actually works as if you have a sweet tooth you know that if you eat healthily then you can reward yourself at the end of the week with a chocolate bar or something.

Unless he's a Mr. Olympia contestant, it's pretty easy to say he could lose some weight.

There are many things that could contribute to his weight. I really big boned and somewhat muscular which is why I weigh about 250.

My dad and I are the same height, I am the perfect weight for that height and he is 60 pounds more than me. I dont know if he doesnt know how to eat, if he doesnt care or if he is just lazy. He goes to the gym but that doesnt mean anything if you feed yoru body toxins. I am going through the same thing, I am trying to figure otu a way to get my dad to lose weight other than "Dad, you are overweight as F((& I can help you lose weight, lets do this...I want my children to know you!"

you dont "convince" him, he makes his decisions as to how he is going to live, the best you can do is present the arguments that backs your theory. maybe show him where his blood makeups are vs where they "should be" for his age. you can also do this with heart rate.
