I hardly skipped any classes when I was in high school, but things have changed when I started university last fall. I have a pretty long walk to school (about 4 kilometres) and while it has been good for my health it has also lowered my motivation to actually go to all the classes. It doesn't help that all my friends tend to skip classes also, it makes me feel alright to do it. The good thing is that the teachers usually mail our "homework" so we only have to check our email daily.

During the various classes I usually just surf the web and make notes when ever I feel like it (that doesn't happen very often) or wait for a smoking break. I can't believe my motivation is so low. Maybe I have to choose some interesting secondary subjects I guess...

So what do you think about skipping classes, do you do it often? How's your motivation?

I dislike my course at college, I'm attending the bare minimum as my essays always hit the mark, regardless. You should like what you do, though. Before college you should just stick with what you are doing whether you like it or not, just so you can have the option of going back to it later and go to college with some decent results whenever you want.

Well I've finished school now so I don't skip classes anymore (duh).

But I did, when at school, only in Year 12 though.

I personally felt bad about skipping classes in college. It made me feel lazy and worthless to a degree, so I tried to go as much as possible. The only classes I tended to skip were my 8am classes, but for the most part I went to class. If I did end up skipping a class it was pre-meditated and not a spur of the moment decision.

I had courses in university that were basically the perfect storm of a boring teacher and slides being put up on the course webpage, and in those courses I usually did not attend the majority of the classes, in fact. Some classes I quite literally never, ever showed up except to write midterms (there were no required assignments, only midterms). I did no better or worse in those classes than in the ones where I attended all the classes.

As long as you know the midterm and assignment schedule so you don't miss any work, I see nothing wrong with not going to classes that you're not required to attend, provided that you are confident that doing so does not negatively affect your grades.

Meh, if you want to cheat yourself. You get as much from university as you take from it. I used to skip a lot in the first couple of years in university, then shaped up and didn't miss any classes really in 3rd and 4th year. My marks went up by around 12%. It's not only that you get more from going to more classes, but also your whole work attitude changes if you make yourself go to class. Think about it this way: you're paying for classes you're not going to. Why do you even deserve to be taking up a place in the university if you miss class all the time? If you keep doing this, by the time you graduate, you'll have just floated through. If you stop skipping, you'll feel like you've accomplished more by the end of your program, and you'll certainly have learned more. Seriously, just go to freaking class. It's not hard once you get used to it. You're seriously only hurting yourself.

I do anything not to miss classes because it`s so difficult to get back on track once you`ve missed something.

4 kilometers? Only? It takes me 1 hour to reach my university with mass transportation (bus, subway and bus again).

As of how I feel about skipping classes, well it's the norm here to skip the classes if you like and always get the notes from someone else (because teachers never mail us anything).

If it's not detrimental to your studies then fine, but if it is you should really think about whether it's worth it.

I am skipping my physics cIass right now. I went there and discovered that it was to be a QA session (happens about once every two weeks) and those have never really helped me. As a result, I just walked right out of the lecture hall. I am currently studying chemistry instead (I have an exam due on Tuesday).

I skipped many hours in high school. As long as my marks where very good and I writed every test on time, no one complained. Now in the med school I don't have that kind of freedom. We learn the new material in home and then on lessons we put them into practical use. I kinda miss the good ol' days ;)

In my chem cIass, about a third of the cIass never shows up (there're about 25 people in the cIass), only popping in to pick up their exams at the end of cIass and to turn them in the following Tuesday. I think it's because they're already far in the chem curriculum (it's a cIass that's needed only by chem majors, and the only prerequisite is general chemistry, but most people seem to take it junior/senior year) and already know most of the material. Most of the material's new to me, so I have to go :P

Making up for a high school isn't really difficult, takes 3 minutes usually unless it's a new topic.

it is pointless to go to school a skip class. i know people that skip classes that are at school. i hate seeing them doing that. i just t hink they are because they are always sitting at the same table all the damn time. if people skip then they should even be at school. i skip a couple times in college. the good thing was that i didn't have to redo the work.

Skipping classes in high school could be okay if you don't do it that often, but assuming that you pay for your college tuition I would not be skipping a college class.

I feel a little guilty, but I don't really learn much in the classroom anyway. The only thing I worry about is if the prof said something important regarding an assignment or exam. In HS they take attendance so you pretty much have to go.

In high school I never skipped at all, but I skip sometimes in college because I either don't feel like going or because I hate having to park 3 blocks away. I don't that doesn't sound like much, but it gets old when you have to do it everyday, and this is my third year in college.

Skipping is not really a good idea though, you never know what you might miss.

The only other real reasons I would skip a class is if I woke up late or if I had other homework to do and couldn't resist the compulsion to finish it.

It depends. Occasionally I skip but the small class sizes and the fact that I'm the only one who seems to take notes means I usually have to show up if I want to get a good grade in the class.

Still, that didn't stop me from purposefully sleeping through chemistry this morning.

God,where I live we skip classes all the time, baby. It's almost necessary especially when we are seniors and all. I haven't seen people since last year in school.

A girl from my class was mising class 132 times and still finished. Is this whicked or not?

Instead sometimes they get us to do crappy work . For example today we were delving for crying out loud.

For me, it was because I could get the material from the slides posted on the course website. I didn't see any reason to go to classes when I could basically learn perfectly well in the comfort of myhome (I lived off-campus). I graduated Honors With Distinction with an A-/A average, so it couldn't exactly have hurt me very much.

bah this reminds me of when I was in 8th grade this one kid who had skipped frequently. Anyway so he takes 10 yes count them 10 6th graders and they all tought it would be a good idea to skip class AFTER first perid to go downtown. Needless to say the teachers knew they had been there that morning and the cops got suspicous when they saw 11 kids walking down town. Needless to say they were all suspended.

Yeah, you can get the material from the classes, but then you miss out on that teacher/student interaction. The ability to ask questions and delve deeper than power points let you. I usually have a list of questions after class for my teacher. I couldn't do that if I just self-studied. (Which I tried one semester by the way. I clepped statistics.)

I dreaded going to my cultural anthropology class because the 2 hour lectures felt a lot longer then they actually were. It wasn't the fact that I didn't find the subject not interesting but the teacher was really old and it seemed she had no desire to teach the subject anymore. I felt it would be better to come to class a few times and read the chapters at home on my own and then come in for the test. it worked out well, I ended up with a B in the class

Because, occasionally, the cIass has sessions that, quite simply, don't provide me with any benefit whatsoever. Physics is the only cIass I ever skip, and then it's only on the days when they do QA instead of lecturing. I went to the first few, and they just didn't help me at all.

I skip class once in a while but there is just so much that I would miss that the day I came back I would just have way more work to do.
