[QUOTE="ChampionoChumps"]13. That list sucks. Classic =/= top 100 worthy.ChampionoChumps

So what does equal top 100 worthy? Also I hope people realize that each decade, aside from the 2000's since this list was made in '05, have an equal amount of films to them.

I feel like they were going for the big name classics in that list rather than picking the best movies

If that were true they would have put Fargo instead of Miller's Crossing, Breathless over Band of Outsiders, Seven Samurai over Yojimbo, not to mention include Gone with the Wind.

Who created this list voters or a critic? It looks like a list that discounts a lot of modern films in favour of older films which is not a bad thing as such.... I just cant but help think there is an elitist edge to it.

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982) Finding Nemo (2003) The Lord of the Rings (2001-03) Star Wars (1977) I haven't seen all LOTR (maybe not even a whole movie) so not sure if that would count. I think I saw Star Wars (I know I saw one of the prequels). I remember ET and Finding Nemo though.

[QUOTE="DharmaMember77"]

[QUOTE="Pirate700"]

Look, what makes a movie great to someone? That person loves the movie. As such, the most popular movies ever should be considered the best overall movies if you want a truly unbiased list. The top 10 selling movies of all time are the 10 best movies of all time to the most people. Popularity is what makes something great in a medium where opinion is what makes something good or bad.

Pirate700

I can't even begin to explain how stupid this comment is

All right then, what makes a movie great then? It's all opinion.

That is true and while everyone is entitled to theirs, would you not agree that people who have seen more movies and have degrees in film studies (yes that is a real thing) are allowed to create these lists, which are meant to represent important in terms of film language and cultural impact, more accurately than an average movie goer who sees two movies a year and exclusively the large blockbusters?

Casablanca (1942)
Citizen Kane (1941)
City Lights (1931) [My film prof thought Modern Times was better]
City of God (2002)
Double Indemnity (1944) [Literally just watched it in cIass four hours ago :P]
Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Drunken Master II (1994)
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
The 400 Blows (1959)
Finding Nemo (2003)
The Godfather, Parts I and II (1972, 1974)
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966) [Prefered Fistful/Few just a little more]
Goodfellas (1990)
His Girl Friday (1940) [Cary Grant, hell yeah.]
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
The Lord of the Rings (2001-03)
The Man With a Camera (1929)
Metropolis (1927)
Notorious (1946) [Was almost going to delete this. I forgot it was Hitchcock, then remembered I wrote an exam with this just last month]
Psycho (1960)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Raging Bull (1980)
Schindler's List (1993)
The Searchers (1956)
Sherlock, Jr. (1924) [I liked The General a little more, but I might concede this one has better technical stunts]
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Star Wars (1977)
Unforgiven (1992)

I can conclude that I've watched way more "modern" films, and a lot of these I wouldn't have even heard of before this year.

Another reason they said they put Sherlock Jr. over The General, not just because of the stunts, was that Sherlock Jr. was one of the first examples of surrealism in american cinema.

Okay. That makes sense to me. That was a pretty wicked dream sequence that got better the second time I saw it. AND reading up on the technical aspect of how they did that was pretty crazy, to boot.

14. Some movies are past the point where I would even understand their social relevance at the time, but that's just the way it is. It's the same reason I wouldn't expect my parents to understand No Country for Old Men, Drive, or There will be Blood.

Out of all these, I have only seen Finding Nemo, Pulp Fiction, Schindler's List (not the entire movie. We watched this is class and I only saw part of it since I had to miss class due to a band festival), and Star Wars.
