I've been clinically depressed for the past four years. I'm on meds, and they really help. Yesterday was my first day of work since I left school, and it felt fabulous. I've had tons of shrinks and been on different kinds of pills, and finally I'm starting to progress out of the void slightly. Feels good man.

I feel like that most days myself. I don't necessarily attribute it to being depressed though. I think, for me at least, it's the routine of my life that is mundane and monotonous, not the actual events in the routine.

I am probably going to sound like a hippie but I know a few natural things that may help. There is a product called Holy Basil that helps with depression, anxiety, etc. You can get it at Vitamin Shoppe or health food stores. It is very helpful.

My life was like that for a long while, but I took medicine to even myself out.Since I moved in with a couple of friends I've not needed anything to make me happy, though.

Maybe you just need to get out more, try more things, make new friends.

If you are having trouble finding enjoyment in activities that you used to enjoy, you may have depression. Depends on the severity and length of the episode, I think. Lots of people go through periods where they are down, but if it becomes prolonged or severe than you may want to see a specialist.

Find something else to do that you enjoy. Find some friends that also have the same issue. They can be really helpful

When I was in a really bad depression I picked up a new hobby. It's helped quite a bit.

XilePrincess

I have found this to be most helpful.

seriously, the best recommendation i can give is make sure your diet is good and that you get exercise and sunlight during the day. anytime i've ever felt depressed i could eat a good meal, get a little exercise and sun and i'd feel better within 24 hrs. if you continue the habit daily you'll probably begin feeling even happier.

Change your mind. Change who you are. You won't be able to change immediately, just one step at a time. When I was depressed 2 years ago I figured "I am not happy with who I am, so I have to change...I need to change." So I did. I can't really pinpoint what, exactly I did to become happier, but right now I can't wait to get a hold of the future and keep improving my own life.

Stay active and do things that make you happy. I went through some depression just recently, and what really helped me was being outside with friends and doing fun stuff. If you don't have any friends, go to a social place and make some! If you suck at making friends or are anti-social, just get out and sprint around town yelling! LET IT ALL OUT, MAN! You're gonna be ok:)

Well, you've been depressed for a long time, so that's Major Depressive Disorder right there. Meds can help, but I've always been wary of them. Personally, I've experienced various levels of depression for the last 12 years. I do a lot of little things to give hyself a better chance of not slipping too deep. I exercise. Doesn't have to be a lot, but I try to get a little bit each day. I eat. Sometimes I'm not hungry, and I can be like that for a long time. So I force myself to eat a healthy amount of food each day to give my body the energy it needs. I sleep, but not too much. I have about 6 alarms in my room, all staggered to go off at different times, and I've asked my roommate to wake me up by specific times(in return, I walk his dog...exercise). Too much sleep is bad. Sometimes I can't sleep, so I pick up a book and I do my studying until I get a little sleepy. I listen to a lot of music. Originally, it was my crutch, and I needed it. Eventually I kind of weaned off of it to the point where I don't need to listen to it non stop in order to function normally. I socialize. I don't have a lot of friends closeby, and sometimes I'm really busy with school, but I make some time for it because it's important. I have a therapist I visit every other week for an hour. She helps me get stuff off my shoulders, and helps unload the stress I pile on myself. Stress is the main cause of psychological disorders. The lower your stress levels, the less your depression affects you. The less chance of having anxiety attacks, etc. This is why, for many, meds are useful. However, they're an accessory. MDD does have heritability, but there are often issues behind depressions that aren't biologically rooted, and they need to be solved(or worked on) to fix the problem. You need to find out why you're depressed. You need to WANT to find out. Therapists are useful in this step, but only if you don't provide a lot of resistance. You need to address the reason you're depressed and work towards resolving it. It may not be something you can fix, but it is always something you can forgive yourself for, or forgive others for, or ask forgiveness for. It requires a lot of self-acceptance. You did a lot of drugs and you kind of isolated yourself from the ones who cared about you. You're off the drugs now, I assume, so maybe write a letter to some of your old friends. You don't need them to be friends with you again, nor can you expect it, but I find that such an activity will help get one into a proper mindset for wiping the slate clean. You don't even need to send the letters off. But yeah, there's a lot of things you can do to improve your situation.

lol That post is me down to a "t." Depression and anxiety can be a b**** but so long as you figure out the things in your life (excercize and sun light are pretty universal I assume) that help you stay positive and keep you in balance and force yourself to stay on top of those things, you're good for the most part. Although I've been slipping bad lately. That's why I'm ordering that p90x baby lol.

:P To be honest, I don't exercise a heck of a lot. Mostly, before I head back home from school I stop off at the campus gym and do 20-30 minutes on the rowing machine. Enough to have some fun, keep myself a bit active, etc. School's over now though, so I'll probably just jog and rollerblade a bit from here on out until school starts again. The p90x thing is supposed to be pretty fun though. One of my friends does it, seems to get results and have a good time. Yeah, depression just requires you to be really aware, and to refrain from pushing anything to the backburner. I set goals for myself, and I try to achieve them. if I do, great. if I don't, I find out why, and see where I could improve. It's a constant effort, sometimes it's a bit tiring, but it's better than the alternative. MUCH better. Hope your p90x helps you out :) If you're in the northern hemisphere, Spring is on its way/is here, and that tends to help matters.

Stay away from psychiatrists. All you do is pay to listen to some idiot give you obvious, cliched advice for an hour and a half. It's a waste of money. Most people know what they need to do; they're just either unwilling or unable to do it. I would suggest distracting yourself with exercise or some other productive interest. That probably sounds cliched too, but I know nothing about you so that's all I can tell you. I don't like giving advice. :/

Well, to be honest, unless you're willing to help yourself, therapy isn't a good solution. Too many go there at the behest of others, and just sit there and say nothing. You have to want to receive help for therapy to be helpful. You have to be open to asking and answering questions about your experiences, but mostly answering and asking questions about yourself.

therapy is more of the middle man between love, hate and regret. and you can only ever chose two. medications are a bit more finicky. some help. some make things worse. some put you places others wouldnt dare. and such is the beast of the human mind

[QUOTE="Lockedge"] Well, to be honest, unless you're willing to help yourself, therapy isn't a good solution. Too many go there at the behest of others, and just sit there and say nothing. You have to want to receive help for therapy to be helpful. You have to be open to asking and answering questions about your experiences, but mostly answering and asking questions about yourself.Lockedge

Therapy does nothing unique that a person can't do on their own.

EDIT: Unless you're talking medication.

Some people can do it on their own. Many can't. Therapy is for those who can't.

If you can't do it without therapy, then you can't do it with therapy. All therapists do is tell their patients what they already know. Maybe therapy does work for some people, but I don't know any of these people.
