The way I and many other people who take music seriously probably see it, you don't truly know music if you judge an artist by his songs. If you've ever said "Yeah I like them, I have like 4 of their songs on my iPod", you don't really know music. If you see music as entertainment rather than art, you're a tool. And chances are if you listen to the radio and/or MTV, you're a toolx2. Thanks for letting me bash you!

A person isn't a tool if they don't know every single thing about the music that an artist creates. One doesn't have to know every single song by an artist that one likes either....and this is all coming from someone who's been playing her own music on a handful of instruments and composing music for 8+ years.

I see music as art. I analyze lyrics. I usually have more than ten of a groups songs. Tool? I think not.

I'm not quite sure I get what you're saying, but I think it's this:

Unless you have an artist's entire collection you don't really appreciate them or their music. You're just a sheep and a tool to the music industry.

Correct?

So if I've only heard one song by a band and I like it, I'm just a pawn to MTV who knows nothing of the arts and doesn't appreciate music like you do? Man, I suck.

It's called albums. An entire album is a piece of work. How can you understand a concept album if you listen to individual songs? I don't own every piece of music by my favorite artists, and even if I did how does it feed corporation? They're signed to Indie labels and some of them produce their own stuff.

I can name a bunch of "mainstream" bands that have heavily influenced music forever. Don't be so quick to judge the mainstream side of things, even if the current mainstream of today is rubbish.

And the way you really know music is if you really enjoy music. If you have an open ear, then you really "know" music.

I thought this was going to be an elitist lecture about what bands you can and can't listen to. Instead I was treated to something even more stupid.

Not every album has some huge concept that requires the listener to listen to every single song in order to get the "real" or "full" meaning. I don't understand this whole... "you're a poser if you only listen to individual songs" thing.

I agree that it is sad that many people only have five or ten songs by any particular artist. It might just be because I am more into album-driven prog, but it seems that you lose out on what an artist has to offer if you only have their 'hit singles.'

I wasn't as clear in my initial post so let me clarify. The quote I made was mocking someone who probably listens to something like Lil Wayne or the All-American Rejects. You might see this rant from a different view because maybe you do listen to major ecord labels. But if you did listen to smaller Independent labels and unsigned bands, you'd see my point better. There is a difference between art and entertainement, and a lot of people don't know the difference

Everyone likes bands that they discover with their friends better than mainstream bands. I'm also not into the mainstream stuff (Dream Theater, Metallica, gangsta rap, etc.)

Why do you keep bringing up the idea of me calling people posers. There's nothing I said that's praising the idea of belonging. I'm saying that you can like an artist if you appreciate their music, but you don't really know music until you're into the album driven stage. Maybe this is just my pseudo-elitist rant that I can't get out into proper words, but all in all I'm bashing commercialism and people who enjoy feeding it.

They're going on a worldwide tour and they're on Rock band, not to mention that they're the most popular prog metal band in the world right now by a fairly large margin (Tool and Queensryche are up there too, though).

Also, Metallica is definitely mainstream. Look at their album sales.

Most of your posts weren't overly clear. They all sounded like you were saying that unless one listens to music in the way that you think one should, they are stupid/unworthy/whatever.

I agree with the "take the album as a whole product" viewpoint. I hate the idea that the future of music resides in singles rather than full works of art. I also agree that judging an artist by their songs is quite a ridiculous notion. Finally, I agree that if you see music as entertainment, you're only going to get a shallow response back from hearing music, as you're just hearing it instead of actively listening to it. You're not treating it like the art it is, much like a regular person walking through an art gallery to look at the pretty pictures. However, I will note that bashing the mainstream is a blind approach, as in somewhat recent years SOME good artists have worked their way up. Not a lot, but some, and to discredit them for getting publicity and air-time would be wrong. It's about as blind as people complaining about today's mainstream music compared to the mainstream music of the past, instead of complaining about the modern music conglomeration compared to the more artist & music friendly coalition of the past.

old metallica isnt mainstream because thrash is not easily digestable by the mass public. nor is it radio friendly music wise or song lenght wise.. dream theater might be popularish but that dosnt make them mainstream, you dont know what mainstream is. mainstream means you turn on the tv, their there, you turn on the radio and their there, you watch saturday night live, their there.. dream theater isnt mainstream in the sence of popularity, track lenght, musical style.. or anything else. just because a band is KNOWN or somewhat popular it dosnt make them mainstream... otherwise the only nonmainstream bands are indie / ones that play local pubs..

Whenever I turn on the radio I hear Master of Puppets and One on the normal KISS 107FM Rock station. Metallica is a quite mainstream and extemely popular band.

[QUOTE="WrongHandLane"][QUOTE="OrkHammer007"]What a great way to prove you're "anti-commercial:" by admitting to liking the single BIGGEST sell-outs to commercialism.

Thanks for posting... the door is that way. ^^^

Nearly 4,000 posts on a forum and you still can't tell sarcasm when you read it? I hope you didn't already tell your mother how you 'Pwned that kid on Gamespot!'

so you were kidding?

Nope, I just felt like making some major contradictions to end my night

"Boomer!" Vomits all over WrongHandLane, then a horde of zombies come rushing out of nowhere to beat him up.

Sorry about that, it keeps happening every known and then. I've always wondered, if my favorite band became even more succesful and started getting more air play on Sky or Digital or whatever, does that mean i'm suddenly a tool?

It's a well-known fact that sarcasm doesn't translate well in text form.

Then again, with only 30 posts, I wouldn't expect you to know that.

Even when the person bashed an entertainer then went on to label him as one of his favorite artists? Get a hint. And this isn't my first forum, as nerdy as it sounds all my posts from all the forums I've been on would be about 3 times your post count.

About 3 or 4 users already pointed out that there are some mainstream artists that produce respectable music. Maybe you didn't catch that. Or maybe you like to make points that have already been made
