Let me get this straight, you're one of those people who think anything modern on the radio isn't real music? Uhh... i guess everyone has their own opinion.

Just so you know, I hate people who have such blind views to music. Same goes for "hardcore" gamers and movie critics who can't enjoy a single modern thing because it's not the same as it was in the past. *EDIT* Or they can't enjoy things that are in the mainstream.Faber_Fighter

You do have a point. But hardcore gamers enjoy videogames...A lot, thats why they're called "Hardcore" :P

I don't get why some people have an immediate dislike for all things "mainstream". Sure some independant bands are good but most of them are horrible. Hence why they are independant.

Hm, so you listen to music cause it's artistic, and not entertaining? Why not both?

Remember music classes in elementary school, as a vibrant child? Where you never really knew what you were doing on your instrument, but loved whaling on it anyway, just cause you loved the way it sounded? Before artistic integrity was part of your vocabulary?

You sir, have KILLED THAT CHILD.

Word. Maybe there's a reason why not many people like them, ya know?

What the hell, art can't be entertaining? Something is wrong here.

Also, there is no way to really know music. There is too much music for one person. I'm pretty sure not everyone here knows Justice, Rammstein, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, etc. Maybe one, or two, but not all. That's why you listen only to what you like.

There's often plenty of reasons. And yes, talent and quality levels do tend to be among those reasons, although I'd probably say that they're minor reasons compared to the main reason of marketability.

Because my ear is completely trained, so I can play all the chord/harmony and melody structures of all the songs everyone judges.

Music theory ftw?

K.

So what was the point of this topic?

I_pWnzz_YoU

I don't know. He's basically saying we'e stupid because we listen to music and enjoy it, when he analysis every song he listens to instead of actually listening to it. Confusing I know.

I didn't see any point in his argument where he stated you can't enjoy the music. The guy's argument was very inflammatory/rude/etc. but that's no reason to simplify his argument into something it isn't. His points were that: -Commercialism in music sucks. -Too many people listen to music for entertainment only, and he thinks that's wrong(to put it nicely) -He feels not enough focus is being put on albums these days, with individual songs/singles/hits taking the place of the experience an album gives. Albums don't need to be concept albums to have a certain flow and feel to them, and part of the reason music can be so great is how each track can be lined up 'just so' within an album and exponentially increase the quality of the song. Now, I'll mention he's blinded by his hate for commercialism, and takes to blaming the mainstream music scene for the brunt of it all (which is wrong) but I can't say I disagree that people aren't paying enough attention to the artistic merit of music anymore(or in some cases, the lack of artistic merit). Now, like I said in one of my above posts, I figure listening to music for entertainment purposes only...it's not BAD by any stretch of the imagination. There's certainly music meant and targeted towards that crowd of people. I just think that people actually listening to music instead of just hearing it would be much better, due to my own experiences in such a transition.

:D I wish I had a trained ear. I've been working on it, and I've made progress, but it's hard and strenuous. But aye, music theory ftw :)

You don't need to listen to everything an artist has ever put out to get a general idea and feel for the type of music they do. You can generally judge an artist off of a few songs.

ok so if I dont know every song of an artist I dont know music? one does not "know" music. it just isnt possible. you know what? in all my years of playing the violin, I've come to notice that those who seem most proud of their "music ability" are those who are the least talented cause those who are truly talented dont need to brag to others they know music.. just a thought buddy

I get a few songs to sample them. If I like, I download/buy an album from them. I see it as an art. I don't listen to the radio or mtv :P

Hmm. Seems like OT does indeed have good taste. I stand corrected. And happy.

And yes, Justice will change people's life for the better. They have some kind of magic only electronic music can give. And they're talented too.

I know the ska/reggae scene really quite well. Anything else is likely to be sketchy.
