TBH, the cost of education is legit. The cost of books, on the other hand, is a crime...a total scam

If I knew any better, I would've searched the Internet for books.

I spent 250 dollars on an Algebra book with 16 chapters. We covered 4 chapters. We almost covered none of them because my professor told us that she didn't want to teach us out of the book because it was "written by men".

Plus new editions every year where they change the order of the chapters for no apparent reason - forcing you to buy the new one lest you be constantly lost because the instructor's assignments don't match the book. And then the ones they don't buy back... when I move that's going to be the toughest part - moving hundreds of pounds of old text books

That is only a small part of the scam (online vs brick bookstore) The main part is the 'new editions' each year -some books need it (science, politics, etc)...but most do not

Yep, it is out of control. I think they get away with it since student loans are more or less like a credit card. Hearing that you don't have to pay for it now and that you have a low interest rate on your loan helps people forget just how much money they're actually spending. Once you're done though, and those first payments kick in, it becomes a lot more real.

I enjoyed going to college since it gave me a structured learning process when before I had been all over the place, and my lecturers were able to engage me in debates which were insightful and hardly obvious. I could have read a book or watched documentaries, but it's not the same.

Getting a degree also shows you can truck along in an establishment, and work well with people, and can show respect without resentment and stuff.

But yes, you don't 'need' to go to college. Nobody 'needs' to go to college.

Why is it that people who can't get into university / college feel the need to belittle it at every opportunity? Is it to make themselves feel better?karriston
Why is it that people who attend university/college feel the need to belittle others who dont at every opportunity? Is it to make themselves feel better? Face it, there is a lot more of people who attend that belittle people who dont. 95% of the students i've met in college are some of the most big headed, stuck up arrogant people ive every met that always feel they are better than others outside of uni. But there are some down to earth people that I have met but it was slim i'll tell ya :)

TBH, the cost of education is legit. The cost of books, on the other hand, is a crime...a total scam

I spent 250 dollars on an Algebra book with 16 chapters. We covered 4 chapters. We almost covered none of them because my professor told us that she didn't want to teach us out of the book because it was "written by men".

I remember one semester, the Professor told everyone to buy her 300 dollar, self written text book. Throughout the entire semester, we only read 2 chapters out of it..

Yep, same thing happened to my wife. They were required to buy the professor's book even though they never actually used it for more than one or two small assignments. It wasn't 300 dollars but it was still ridiculous.

I didn't even recognize you  You are in a bad spot b/c of family stuff though. Otherwise you could take that experience and leave (what most people do with their first job after college) -you get put in a spot, and it is often hard to get out (especially if you are really good at your job)

Yeah I thought to put a little happier spin on Snake and on life, we will see how long it lasts. Yes I know i am in a bad spot but I hope one day soon I will be able to get out of here. Even though I just got a promotion that went into effect today I am doing the exact same job but now make just a little more. The only bad thing that sucks about the promotion is now I can't really apply for any other jobs in the company cause I have to stay at the position for one full year before I can apply for something else, unless I get special permission to do it. Who knows, I might try another company or just be a teacher so I would only have to work 9 months a year and then play games the rest of the time!

[QUOTE="rawsavon"][QUOTE="CyleM"]I think you are on to something because so far with my career I have no needed my college degree.CyleM

1. Congrats 2. 'Titles' are good when applying other places

Thanks again but I don't think going from a Customer Service Representative II to a Customer Service Representative III doesn't really look all that flattering. lol

Well, at least you got a promotion and a raise without any new responsibility?

We haven't had raises in 2 years now.

if you're going to be in any of the sciences, engineering, research, etc fields then you need one. while you might be able to get the same education from the library you will not likely have the same lab skills, group work, projects, etc. also employers don't have the time or patience to assess each individual that applies for a job. they'll just look at your resume and only talk to the one that are most qualified. Without that piece of paper they have no idea what you might or might not know.

It's what I like to call the circleyoink of life. It really is like a big club that you have to pay dues to in order to get some of the good jobs. You can occasionally find good, high paying jobs without it, or start a business of your own, but do you really want to intentionally make your life harder than it might be?

um true you can still learn a lot of stuff without going to college, but if you don't go to college, you can't get that degree, therefor you can't get as good of a job, which is what we all really want, that's basically what our first 20 years are preparing us for, right?
