the best thing about the sport growing in the uk at a fast rate is that so many of you just dont WANT it to be there. I dont see why it would matter. If you dont like it, then dont watch it. but the thing is, so many of you are and the ones that dont cant handle that other people do. Why?

Hexagon_777

I live in the UK. And I can tell you for definite, I know nobody, that's right nobody, who is remotely interested in American Football. It isn't going to become a sport we care about, people only attended that game to see what NFL games were like. I'd imagine the same will happen this year, but that doesn't mean we will adopt it as our own.

It just isn't some amazing growing interest. I'd imagine you'd find no more English people interested in NFL than American people interested in English football (or Soccer or whatever)

I actually think its one of those things were people watch it and dont talk about it. If you go on team forums you always find a few british people wishing they played the games at normal times and there were more games over there.

And from that you conclude that the sport will eventually take over the UK? Additionally, all your evidence concerns itself with the UK. What about the rest of the EU? No sport has dethroned football there.

theres actually a german guy on the 49ers football forum, so who knows. i heard somewhere, that football is getting bigger in germany. i dont know if thats true

i want football to become an olympic sport.

The Reggie Bush-less Saints and a stumbling San Diego Charger team? I guess it's karma's way to thank the UK for shipping David Beckham over here.

hey dont tell me that, tell your friends, family etc that seem to be eating it up. pretty soon you guys will be wearing joe montana and tom brady jerseys.

Selling out one game doesn't make it the new national sport you know...

not yet.

Lets all laugh at the weak armor padded players who fight it out and actually scream in pain when hit. The moment they stop wearing all that padded armor and get the helmets off I might actually being enjoying it. But until then get off my island.

People would die without helmits, people would get seriously injured and careers would be shortened by God knows how many years without the pads you speak of.

Football is just too tough on the body to do without pads. Players are too strong, too fast, too big, and take huge hits to survive without anything.

thats actually a faulty argument. because without the pads the game would be different. people wouldn't hit as hard because they risk injuring themselves in the process. it'd be a different game

you risk it anyway, people are injured the entire season. almost every player is.

a lot of the injuries football players sustain ( twisted ankles, torn ligaments / tendons from landing oddly / getting tangled up in weird ways, hit blindly etc ) would have happened with or without pads due to the nature of the sport. and you're crazy if you think those guys would risk the gravy train hitting someone at full speed when they themselves have no protection on.

There are many ways to make a tackle, in the situation you describe you would never catch me going head up with the runner, I'd be down at the legs to avoid the blunt of the hit. Still a good chance of getting injured though.

And this is why padding is good, we love huge hits. It adds to the game.

You should add "American" to "football" in order to make it "American football" because "football" is what we call soccer.airg6

Thats why he said the NFL.

I was focusing on the latter part of the topic title.

it happens in the states anyway. i mean if youre a defensive player trying to make a play, your gonna run the fastest you can and hit someone as hard as you can so you can possibly knock the ball loose. so in other words, yeah it would happen.

without pads, people would literally die.

It'll get shown at about 3 in the morning on an unwatched channel that once promised (and failed) to deliver the three F's, "Films, Football and F**king".

No-one gives a poo about American Football over here, because we know it's rubbish compared to Rugby.

i played rugby like that back in highschool, we were taught to play like that, if you're trying to push through a defense then you can either dodge or go down low and ram your shoulder into them

Probably, national sports generally take precedent over those from other countries.

well i listed three that are all more international than american football,

i think even Australian football is more international as it's played in both Australia and New Zealand also it would be much more fun to watch, my friend lived in new zealand for a few years and said it was more brutal than anything in rugby, there are pretty much no rules which are enforced

you're missing my point entirely. say perhaps you take the entire nfl and suddenly enforce a no pads rule. he's what will likely happen.. the first few numb-skulls will think they need to play exactly the same and hit just as hard. they'll get concussions, compound fractures etc.. boom. career ( maybe life ) over. the next few guys will say "wait a minute.. this is nuts." and pull back a little when they go at each other. when this happens players will get benched for being 'wusses' and not killing themselves on the field. the players will likely get together to enact rules to protect player safety ( every sport has rules to protect participant safety.. even football ) in light of the fact they no longer have the protection they once enjoyed. aka. the game will change

Well, it should still be an offensive show since neither teams have a defense worth squat.

Drew Brees will probably throw for 300 yards and 4 TDs if Marques Colston comes back for real this week. LT would normally torch the Saints, but he may post another mediocre day.

Either way, the game doesn't look too promising.

[QUOTE="comp_atkins"] a lot of the injuries football players sustain ( twisted ankles, torn ligaments / tendons from landing oddly / getting tangled up in weird ways, hit blindly etc ) would have happened with or without pads due to the nature of the sport. and you're crazy if you think those guys would risk the gravy train hitting someone at full speed when they themselves have no protection on.comp_atkins

There are many ways to make a tackle, in the situation you describe you would never catch me going head up with the runner, I'd be down at the legs to avoid the blunt of the hit. Still a good chance of getting injured though.

And this is why padding is good, we love huge hits. It adds to the game.

my point was the absence of padding would change the game. you wouldn't see all the huge hits because players would avoid those situations

not how the nfl is set up, people are fired/released for the silliest reasons. if youre seen not giving it your all and getting the tackle asap youre gone. if you arent playing like a freight train youre going to miss the tackle. i played football, and i know this for a fact.

you're missing my point enitrely. say perhaps you take the entire nfl and suddenly enforce a no pads rule. he's what will likely happen.. the first few numbskulls will think they need to play exactly the same and hit just as hard. they'll get conconssions, conpound fractures etc.. boom. career ( maybe life ) over. the next few guys will say "wait a minute.. this is nuts." and pull back a little when they go at each other. when this happens players will get benched for being 'wusses' and not killing themselves on the field. the players will likely get together to enact rules to protect player safety ( every sport has rules to protect participant safety.. even football ) in light of the fact they no longer have the protection they once enjoyed. aka. the game will change

actually, i would say youre missing my point entirely and that I understood yours and that its wrong.

if you pull back, that split second changes everything. its not flag football.

conconssions and such are an everyday thing anyway.

the game wouldnt change, its a fundamental part of the game. if that changed it would be a different sport.

maybe if this were 50 years ago it mighr be oaky but with the super fast offenses in the past 30 years its just not happening. You gotta tackle fast and hard or youll miss it and be benched and lose the game. If you dont understand this, I hope you watch a few nfl games and youll see what im talking about.

Maybe we can have football in the olympics, that would be awesome.

6_volts

No, it wouldn't.

yes it would. i would actually watch the olypmics then

No, and I doubt it will gain enough popularity worldwide to be in the Olympics.

yes, and it might. I hope it does one day. I mean Europe already had its own football league, it just folded because of the severe lack of talent. the future will tell

Forget the UK, it's pretty certain that Canada will be getting an NFL team in Toronto soon . . . .*cough* Buffalo Bills *cough*

I think it's waisted on them. People here who actually love the sport lose their chance to see a home game. Yeah it'll expand the game "someday," but frankly I don't care.

The bills have always had a diehard fanbase in Buffalo, but I think they NFL is looking to move them to a bigger market - for better or worse.

No, I never listen to the radio, but that rumor has been going on for a while now. I think Mortenson on ESPN talked about it too yesterday. I rather have Holmgren as coach though, but we'll see how Singletary does for the remaining 9 games.

It will be an outrage if the Bills continue playing at a high level and still have the franchise moved to Canada. The Sonics were the Sonics...they weren't successful and Oklahoma City loved the Hornets so that was a smart move. This move? Eh. I'm not loving it. Unless the Bills tank, which...they are the Bills.

i love Holmgren because hes WCO. I know he dosent want to coach anymore, but if he coaches hell probably hire a WCO coach. Martz is good and all, but this is a bill walsh team.

Yeah, the main reason to get him back is because Holmgren is Walsh's best desciple. Though, the only QB that we have that could probably run the WCO at this time would be Shaun Hill. Anyway, I don't think Martz will be here next year if the niners continue to clean house. There's a good chance Jed will want to return the niners to their roots since it looks like he's in charge now.
