acting itself is an fake act, sure those in the movie drama have powerful mental strength but i cannot praise them for just acts.swordsboywhat more do you want them to do to be worthy of the attention?
[QUOTE="Nude_Dude"]I can understand where you're coming from, you're a terrible, terrible actor. swordsboyyou are terribly mistaking, i am only a poster not actor. but i can act above average though. which means you can still get some attention .why fussing then?:P
I hate professional sports simply because they get paid millions of dollars to do nothing that contributes to society or culture, when people like scientists and artists scrape by when they are the ones making all of the innovations that drive culture and society. At least the working man gets paid a steady paycheck to keep the mainstream running smooth.
[QUOTE="WiiCubeM1"]i agree to this, however i also think that sportsmen are at the least able to make their country proud by winning something.I hate professional sports simply because they get paid millions of dollars to do nothing that contributes to society or culture, when people like scientists and artists scrape by when they are the ones making all of the innovations that drive culture and society. Yeah, it's entertaining. I will give it that. I just hate how much we pay the players.

How do sports figure contribute nothing to society or culture? Do you realize how huge a part of American culture baseball is? How how huge a part of Canadian culture hockey is? (just to use a couple of examples off the top of my head.) And many artists make huge amounts of money.

Sports: It's just entertainment, and something that we can be just as entertained from by watching amateurs, where they play for fun or pay to play. Again, it's not the sport, I just don't get why we pay certain people millions to do something that was already being done.
Art: I know there are rich artists, just like their are a few rich scientists, but they differ from sports in two ways. The people who make a living off of it are overwhelmingly poor or middle-class, and their work is original. I couldn't think of Quantum Physics or paint the Mona Lisa, but I can hit a triple in baseball and I don't do it for a living.

Anyone can hit a triple in baseball given the right set of circumstances. The question is can you do it at the level those guys do? I doubt it. There are few who can. And your problem isn't with sports players, it's with the free market. Players are only paid what the market dictates.

Then I hate the free market, then. No, I can't hit the same levels as someone in the majors (although I did pitch at 85 once. Pure luck), but what they do is a common, generic skill with nothing unique about each player. The thing I REALLY hate about some of them is how cocky they can get.

But it's not a common, generic skill. If it were more people would be doing it, the market would be saturated, and player salaries would be low. Now since you brought up artists what makes them worthy of being paid so much? Anyone can create art.

What I mean is, simplified, anyone can play sports, and with enough practice, anyone could be as good as them (well, not ANYONE, but a sizeable chunk of the population). With art, it's all personal, all created through one's creativity and no one else on earth can create the exact same thing they did. Not everyone can create "art". I can draw, fairly well, and I can write video game remixes, but what I do is draw pre-existing characters and remix pre-existing music, none of it is truly original.

Okay, I did jump the gun a bit there, but it's more about why they get treated the way they for doing what almost anyone can do. It's all about a certain few making millions in a useless skill that many people also have and anyone can get to with practice. I paid to play soccer and hockey in grade school, but professionals get paid millions to do the same thing I did.

I highly doubt most people are in the physical condition to play sports like football and basketball. It also takes skill that is learned through long hours of hard work and dedication. If it was so easy to do why are we not all pro athletes? they are paid so much because they are hard to replace.[QUOTE="WiiCubeM1"][QUOTE="SF_KiLLaMaN"] Do nothing that contributes to society? With the right strategies and skillset, most college players could keep up with pro-sports. But again, they are getting paid millions to do something that is completely useless for anything other than wasting time. I mean, I don't expect to make any money from playing video games, and I'm Mario Kart and Smash Bros champ at my High School and college (yes, we had these as competitions. Our computer teacher in HS was awesome). They are entertainment using souped-up skills anyone has, and I don;t think it deserves as much money as they make.

No, not "anyone" can play at the level of the top pro teams/players. Have you ever seen a top pro league team play a semi-pro or amateur teams. They usually get utterly destroyed. The fact is that people like to watch people who are the best at something in the world compete against others of similar skill and they're willing to pay for it.Sports are a huge aspect of culture.I hate professional sports simply because they get paid millions of dollars to do nothing that contributes to society or culture, when people like scientists and artists scrape by when they are the ones making all of the innovations that drive culture and society. Yeah, it's entertaining. I will give it that. I just hate how much we pay the players.
Sports as a whole contribute a lot to society and culture. Just look at entire towns that basically focus on their high school sports teams. Not only that but the discipline and self esteem it instills in kids who don't even become professionals. It gives people the drive to compete and improve themselves. How many fathers and sons are only able to bond and connect over sports? As for how much they're paid: they are paid as much as we are willing to pay them, no more and sometimes paid less. Tons of money is generated by actors and athletes, which is why they get paid so much.Sports are overrated, I never understood why they think it makes them so great to get hardcore about exercising. For example swimmers will go at 5:30 in the morning to swim, and then swim late afternoon. I guess not everyone can be as gluttonous as they can be. Actually making movies takes a lot of art, and has influenced me as a person. In fact they are part of the media, and they definately try to influence the way people think. Sports are just for people who want to pump their egos I think. And a lot of people enjoy it. Of course most people could not do what they do, they are too fat XD. I have been through a few of these threads, and there is always the arguement about free market. Well, all I got to say is that people.. Are fvking DUMMMMB! I also think that the reason college students pay high tuitions is to support sport institutions. What a rip off!

just like eating, what is your point? I am kind of seeing the majority opinion rules type of argument, even the free market ftw arguement is basically sayying "well most people do this, so it is legit." Majority preference does not convey moral value.
Analytical arguements aside, it is subjective, I think they get more money simply because they are better connected with society, amirite?

:? My point is that sports are an integral component to many cultures throughout the world
So let's say you have a product that you are selling for $100. Not only that, you have millions of people willing and able give you $100 each for that product. But I don't think your product is worth that much. So even though you have people willing to give you $100 for your product, you can only sell it for $2, because I don't agree with the price. Just because you don't think they should get paid that much, others are willing to buy the product that athletes and actors provide at the current price.Sports are overrated, I never understood why they think it makes them so great to get hardcore about exercising. I fully agree with the TC. Far too much praise is given to the bottom feeders of society in my opinion... entertainers. Why does everyone worship actors and singers etc? Great musicians deserve the praise but the mediocre ones get too much. Actors are even worse. How about we show some appreciate to scientists and educators?
I guess its because people sit on their asses watching TV so Actor A is recognisable, hence the obsessions and pathetic behaviour.
EDIT: I also think athletes shouldn't be obsessed over, however I don't put them in the same category as entertainers. Athletes strive and work hard for a personal goal. Their success often motivates people to take up physical activities which are healthy. Actors just encourage people to watch television and waste their lives away.

Do you enjoy certain movies, television shows, video games, etc? Do you feel they enrich your life in someway?
No idea. I think directors and writers and actors are the trinity that make the medium good. Neither is more important than the other. Yet actors get worshipped, its obvious why, they're in the spotlight. Still its strange. They should be envied and villified really.
