Bands imitate what is popular because they obviously see it as the easiest way to make the most money. That's why in the 70s and 80s and very early 90s you saw so many similar types of music. But then once bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy and so on became the most popular music you see so many other bands who might actually have talent imitate those styles because its the surest thing to make money.I think if we had a great band once again who made big hit after big hit and didn't have the girly singing voice and whatnot we would see more bands trying to imitate good music again.

If you don't know that happened in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and the entire history of music, I'm worried for you.

Problems:

1. Girly, nasal-only voices
2. Guitars are only power chords. No more awesome solos.
3. Emos
4. Most bands revolve solely around the color black
5. No awesome lyrics anymore
6. Too much computer/synthesizer use. Guitar, bass, drums, maybe piano. That's all you need.
7. Too much depression. Sing about something positive, like, say, LOVE. The best bands ever wrote about love, not depression.

I'm sure there's more I forgot about.

The only one you had right was "Major label's unwillingness to sign anyone who might not make boatloads of money."

Oh, wait.

Nothing has gone wrong with the whole genre, just certain bands... Akron/Family and Black Lips still seem to be kicking major ass. Also, Les Savy Fav have a new album out!

Emo music is a sub genre. It does not account for rock

There's nothing wrong with rock. It would have died out if everyone continued to make the same music as the 60's and 70's. Alternative FTW.

Personally, I think rock is dead. The 80s were the last years of good rock, and pretty much as soon as it was 1990, rock died. But that's just my opinion.

a lot of bands are more concerned about image than music. They're too worried about making music videos, rather than the music.

Since when are those bands "rock?" Last I checked they fell into subgenres.

Limp Bizkit falling into Nu Metal and Rapcore
Linkin Park falling into Alt Rock, Alt Metal, Nu Metal and Rapcore
Korn falling into Nu metal, Alt metal and Industrial metal
Fall Out Boy being heavily disputed.

Actual "rock" bands like Theory of a Deadman are still keeping true to rocks "roots."

And by the way, bands have been imitating each other for a looooooon time.

There's nothing wrong with any kind of music. The only problem you'll face is if you're extremely elitist and can't enjoy a song if, say, it doesn't have a solo or something.

Agreed. Music is an ever changing, ever evolving entity. So what if your tastes are for the stuff of the 80's. A lot of bands were around in the 80's.

People need to start finding their own music, rather than whatever is shoved down their throats on the radio

I agree man...it just seems the mainstream bands of today stink. Everytime I turn on the radio to a new rock station it's a whiney nasal-ly sounding complainer, crying about how much life sucks.

I literally have to change the station to AM radio and listen to NPR to cheer up :P

Yeah, well he's right. Rock wouldn't even be around if it was the same as the 60's and 70's. People would've been bored with it after 30 or 40 years  It's the same for Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance and all those other garbage bands. They'll all be gone soon enough.

True...but not all opinions are equal. My opinion could be that this song:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2120659111755287021

is the single best song in history. But honestly...how reliable would my opinon be? Sure...its my opinion and you can't prove me wrong...but anybody with any sort of taste would know my opinion was trash.

What's wrong is that record labels take in bands for image rather then talent. Excellent examples are KISS, Motley Crue, every single freaking hair and glam metal band etc.

Its not that modern music is bad, its just that its too same-y. Its boring.

The Killers are the one band breaking away from the modern by rocking a little' 80's revival.

I like them a lot, their actually interesting, and great song writers.

I'm still iffy on modern stuff, only a few bands I like.

Pop isnt a bad thing. Its a good thing

Pop is hooks, catchy chorus's, stuff that reels you inmusic.

Being a rock band that writes pop songs is the best way to get listeners.
