technically the gays stole the word from its original meaning of "happy" so i think it should go back even further than an identification of homosexualityAncientNecroI am glad our insidious plot of stealing a word was successful.
It happens with some people. Ignorance gets the best of them. They just haven't expanded their vocabulary to the point of saying a different word, so they fall back to that word, because they think of it as a derogatory word. I, for one, don't use it. If I get frustrated, I don't ever spout that out. Kinda childish.3eyedrazorbackI despise those inconspicuous ignorants.
It's too late. It is the new substitute for stupid and has been for years.
Get over it. No one will change just cuz some people think people should stop.
I'll use it every so often. No biggie. Avoid using around gay people just to be considerate.
It isn't like people are saying it on purpose to discriminate against gays.

You will never come to a place where there aren't people who just spout out ignorance. It's inevitable.

i disagree. its the evolution of language. dont take it with any reference to homosexuality. i will use any word at any time i please. and if you should decide to take offense to it even if it holds NO reference to your persons. that sounds like a personal problem to me. being offended by words is one of the most irrational things i can think of.its a word buddy. get used to it. think outside the box. it doesnt litterally mean "that video has homosexual tendencies towards videos of the same sex....".blackacidevil96So would it be OK if the n-word were used as a general insult?

yes. i find the fact that you feel the need to abreviate it as "the n-word" horrible. language should NEVER be censored. no matter how its taken. its usage these days is hardly ever in an insulting fashion. and even as an insult it hardly makes sense anymore. sticks and stones people. sticks and stones. and the whole argument that an entire race should be offended by a freakin word is just rediculous. the racism is only apparent when the word is touted as only allowed to be used by a certain group. or when saying it should not ever be spoken. the more its used without racial reference(as in just a general random insult for instance). the less "impact it will carry.". people get way to hung up on words. focusing only on past usage and denotiation instead of what the speaker is conotating in their message.

I'm not saying I'm more intelligent. But, I don't like the Blackhawks, so that must account for something

First off, I have no choice about it; it gets censored by Gamespot, and even if I dodged the censor, I'd get modded. And secondly... at least you're consistent. :P[QUOTE="blackacidevil96"][QUOTE="Funky_Llama"]So would it be OK if the n-word were used as a general insult?Funky_Llama

I use it to mean something I find to be unappealing or lacking in substance. It's only slang, not really a big deal.
Right, just like if I were to describe something unappealing/distasteful as being "so black" or "so Christian", for example, it would totally not be a big deal or in any way offensive to any reasonable person.I use it to mean something I find to be unappealing or lacking in substance. Well, unfortunately, there isn't much you nor anyone can do about it. If people ae going to use it negatively, then so be it, they just hopefully will not use it negatively around a homosexual person.
Yes, I know I copied the title form the other topic. Anyways, I've been hearing people use the word gay as something offensive. For example: go into youtube and every single video has comments like "This video sucks, it is so gay A video itself can't be homosexual and I'm pretty sure they aren't using the other meaning of gay (happy). People in my school generally use the word gay when something is extremely feminine or crappy. But not every single homosexual is feminine. My little pocket dictionary from my bookshelf says that the word gay can be used as a Adjective and a noun. When it's a noun it means that a person practices homosexuality. When the word is used as an adjective it generally means is bright and pleasant. Now the question is, Why is the word gay used as something offensive? Why can't it be used as a title here at Gamespot?MrEnvelope
30 years ago gay meant happy/glad.. 10 years ago it was to refer to a homosexual, and still presently does, but the term gay is dominantly an expression of something that is lame/stupid/inadequet. So I don't really think it should be viewed as offensive because most people can distinguish when its being used to say how dumb something is or if they are refering to someone as being homosexual.. And the term gay for calling someone homosexual isn't even that offensive its a more polite way of putting their sexual preference out there than saying any number of highly explicit terms.

I have seen and used the word gay to lable someones sexual preference but not out of hate or negativity just to state hey this person is into dudes / girls.. not a big deal.
