I know it's old news to complain about people who spoil books/movies/etc., but I've been watching something over the past few days that just really disturbs me.

I've discovered on YouTube all these videos (here's an example) of people who got their kicks out of shouting spoilers at people waiting in line for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." There are a ton of these, and to be honest I find them kinda disturbing. The number of times they say something like, "I can't wait to ruin these kids' lives" is just really sad.

I know it's just a book, but the deliberate and cruel nature of this just leaves me shaking my head. It was one thing when people accidentally spoiled books or movies, but now this "let's get organized and do it just to be mean" kind of spoiling is a new level. One guy even dressed up in a suit and tie and walked around at a midnight "Deathly Hallows" gathering with official-looking sealed envelopes. He would go up to kids and folks and say something like, "Hey...you've won a special Harry Potter prize--but you can't open it until you buy the book!" And of course, the envelope contained a spoiler sheet.

I've stopped going to talkbacks and message boards online whenever a movie or book is coming out...everyone now seems to love putting huge spoilers in all caps in the subject line. Sad, very sad.

My question for you is...why? What is it about our culture (and truth be told, most of those doing this were teens/20somethings) that is raising a generation who take such delight in maliciously spoiling things for people? Are they THAT unhappy? Is it a feeling of powerlessness?

What's the deal with these people?

I had a friend who had a partial spoiler as her away message. I'm still pissed at her, because it killed a ton of suspense.
I was only a couple hundred pages in, and I saw her message, which said that Harry survives. Ruins the part where Harry marches into the forest to die at Voldemort's hands.
Its like bullying, except their identities are kept anonymous. They like to feel power. Just ban them.... end of story.

Yeah, people are pretty mean. Most of the spoilers were untrue in any case.
Some said that Harry goes to the Deathly Hallows to revive some folks, when in fact, the hallows are not a place.
I purposely spoiled the ending to the Harry Potter books for many people. I even made a post about it here on the forums. The week-long ban was worth it. The only way to explain this to you? I enjoy seeing other people miserable. I like to ruin their fun and generally revel in their suffering. Much like Dennis Leary, I accept and embrace the fact that: I'm an ***.HupHupOranje

You mean Dennis Leary's stage persona... Are you also a joke theif like he was?

Lucky for me, there wasn't anyone like that at my midnight party, and since then I've finished the book so it can't be spoiled for me.

Since maddox became popular, many people have taken that same "dude i'm a total **** aren't i cool" thing and applied it to themselves. I dont buy it though. Far as i'm concerned, if you would yell spoilers at a child who's been waiting seven years to read a simple book, thus making that poor individual miserable, you'd have to be either a husk of a person trying far too hard to be cool by appearing mean and bullyish, or you too are miserable and have a subconscious desire to make everybody else as miserable as you.

I could care less about people spoiling the ending, for reading, its the journey there.

But I'd have to say, the journey through reading a Harry Potter book is an arduous one.

It's not even about being cool. When you're a real *** no one tells you you're cool - they just tell you you're an ***. I'm just an egotistical jerk who thinks that I'm better than everyone else ergo I remind them of their pathetic existence by pointing out that their happiness hinges on a fictional story.

I was terrified of seeing a spoiler for book 7, especially with the text supposedly being leaked a week early. I just stayed off the internet and thankfully nobody spoiled it for me in person. But yeah, it is a pretty disturbing trend that so many people think it's fun/cool to ruin stuff for other people.

It's a great movie, but i'm not sure. The revalation right at the end is somewhat of a centre-piece to the whole film.

All his movies are weaksauce without some stupid plot twist. I won't ever see another of his films again after the Village. That's a bad example as the Potter books don't rest on one stupid plot twist to be great.

Any film or book that relies on that one genius twist fails in my book.

Their happyness does not fringe on a fictional story. That's just one thing which makes the happy; and who are you to deny that? There are many groups of general interest; it could be alien to you so you can ignore it, or make fun of it.... but why destroy it just for the sake of ruining other people's day?

You cant justify it at all. It's sick, and no matter how you throw around "oh i'm just an ***" you cant change the fact that at the very core of this, it's a psychotic, horrible urge.

You're a kid. You started reading a book seven years ago. You've been waiting all this time to find out how it ends, to read that one, final book and some scumbag deliberately ruins it for you, just to make you miserable.

Why? Why do that? Why deprive somebody of something which brings them happyness, and does NOTHING to affect you in the slightest?

It gives the person a false sense of power. If you're such a loser to actually look forward to a harry potter release to ruin it, you are by far a bigger loser than the readers there.

He wouldn't really do this. I guarantee he isn't as much of a jerk as he says he is. Anyone who would go to a theatre just to yell out spoilers would definitely get their ass kicked by someone there.

I just have one thing to say, in all my years on earth I have never run into someone that is a complete ass based soley on the fact that he thinks he's better than others and wants to cut them down for it. EVER. Not even in highschool. All the bullys and jerks in highschool were kids that were beaten by their fathers. No one has the guts to be that way in real life based on ego if their life is amazing, especially not to strangers. No one. That kind of fake bravado only exists on the internet.

I have a single word that sums up your post: assumption. I honestly enjoy being mean and doing things to get a rise out of other people. If someone takes something so seriously, I will likely challenge it (in a very rude way) - even if I agree with their belief. Simpy because I laugh when I see people get worked-up over fairly meaningless things - like threads on the internet.

The_Ish

It gives the person a false sense of power. If you're such a loser to actually look forward to a harry potter release to ruin it, you are by far a bigger loser than the readers there.

"Ohhh I feel so big and bad because I made a kid cry."

While secretly, that 35 year old man goes home to his soon to be divorced wife, 2.5kids who don't give a damn about anything, his beer and high school football tapes, only to wake up the next morning walking like the undead towards his soul and mind-eroding dead-end job.

Fixed. :P

He was actually able to find a wife that put up with him?

some people.... *shakes head*

but why destroy it just for the sake of ruining other people's day?

The_Ish

Because it's funny. People take it way too seriously. It's a book.

That doesn't justify their actions.

No you're right it doesn't. I'm just saying that there isn't a person alive on earth that, in real life, would be a jerk or an ass or try to ruin other people's lives if they themselves had an amazing, wonderful life. This dude is saying he is simply a jerk to others because he believes he's better than them. I'm saying that kind of attitude only exists on the internet. No one would get away with being like that in real life, they'd either be arrested or beat the crap out of fast.

You should be prepared for that one person who takes his stuff too far.

I agree with one thing people taking anything too seriously. I myself kind of poke fun at that. But I wouldn't be straight out mean to anyone for it. I would just kind of make humor out of it.

I still doubt you'd actually just be mean to a complete stranger in real life if they were passionate about something you weren't. You'd get your ass kicked eventually and that's no fun. Here on the internet I believe you would do that, but that takes zero guts. I'm not assuming anything, I know how the internet works vs real life.

I'm saying either your life isn't that good so you want to take it out on others. Or you are for the most part lying. OR you really are this kind of person, but only on the internet.

Give me one example of how you were an ass to a complete stranger in real life and got away with it. Not a friend, anyone can be an ass to a friend and get away with it. I'm talking some guy at a gas station, an old lady crossing the street, a group of protestors, etc.

Well, there marriage was a torrid affair, both of them deluding themselves into thinking they found someone, only to hate them years later.

Also, when the week ends, he gets fired from his job because what his skills are a disposable asset to the company, meanwhile the Harry Potter geek who's head of the accounting department gets a raise.

I mocked a couple sitting outside of a McDonalds once. They were both fairly obese and I shouted some verbal insults about their weight. They looked over, were clearly peeved with my actions - yet did nothing. A vast majority of people are far too timid to actually resort to physical violence, and far too lazy to pursue any type of formal action.
