[QUOTE="EnigManic"]Chicks and cars aside, there are many excellant reasons to move to Japan. I'm sure people can come up with negative things to say, no nation is perfect. But Japanese society is definitely more respectful, civilized and hard-working than most Americans. I would move to Japan ina heartbeat if I could afford it.jointed

Have you ever been there? They're extremely racist and xenophobic, don't expect to be treated as if you yourself were japanese but if you can look past these flaws...then by all means, go for it.

No, I haven't been to Japan yet. But I have been interested in their culture since I was ten. As far teh racist remarks, I think they're justified. Most Americans have become fat, lazy, stupid and greedy. Regarding Japan's population problem (google it), the PM, in response to being asked about immigration as a solution, has been quoted as saying "We don't want to be another America." I agree with him. What good is living in a melting pot, when everyone is lazy and stupid and our government is taking away our civil rights?

I'm not talking about Americans, I'm talking about ALL races and nationalities. The japanese are nice to you if you're there as a tourist...but assimilation into their society is almost impossible if you're white...just look at how they treat South-Koreans.

Okay, point taken. I suppose, as efficiently and honorably as they do things and have been doing things for millenia, they don't want their culture to be negatively influenced by outsiders.

personally, I'll take my chances. I love Japan and will definitely go there someday.

[QUOTE="the_foreign_guy"][QUOTE="Kikouken"]Oh...sure, go ahead. I thought you were gonna say you wanna go there because you thought all the cars would be uber sports cars, all drifting through the city.Kikouken

False. They drift during the night, and they drive these cars... 8) :| 8)

I wouldn't mind driving one of those things in my city. It wouldn't be very lady-like, but it sure would cause some nosebleeds to the Japanophiles that used to go to my school.

Well no offense but you've never acted very "ladylike".

That's a compliment coming from me, by the way.

Tokyo/Japan is nothing like what you see in Tokyo Drift. If you want a detailed and realistic view of Japan then I strongly suggest you watch All About Lily Chou-Chou and Bounce Ko Gals. I also recommend you read some of Haruki Murakami's books.

It's far from how you picture it....and there's a reason why Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

jointed

Without even watching them I'd guess from an "extremely" pressured society?

Also if I had to live in Japan I'd probably go crazy too. They have gameshows where they break into your house and fire off prop cannons. Talk about always looking behind your shoulder.

Instead of Japan, why not come to Canada? Political instability, and an extremely right wing PM is perfect for you.

how about you take a holiday to Japan, and see if you like it (not just the shops and the nightlife) but the rural areas too, find out if you could in fact cope with living there. After all, as with anything, is a lot deeper than it appears in the media. And Japan is a very stressfull place, with very crowded cities, high living costs etc etc. As much as i like japanese culture, i dont want to live there, not yet anyway, although i do want to visit pretty badly.

(and i just thought, Japan has natural hazards like Earthquakes and Typhoons, dont forget about that if you dont fancy it)

Japanese Nationality Law

Interesting, isn't it?entropyecho

You should have kept reading. Here is the next paragraph:

Naturalization

The Minister of Justice must approve all applications for naturalization. Review of an application generally takes about one year.

The criteria for naturalization are provided in Article 5 of the Nationality Act:

  1. Continuous residence in Japan for five years or more
  2. At least 20 years old and otherwise legally competent
  3. History of good behavior generally, and no past history of seditious behavior
  4. Sufficient capital or skills, either personally or within family, to support oneself
  5. Stateless or willing to renounce foreign citizenship

If you want to go there because of the hot chicks u saw in the movie, ull be disappointed. The girls in the movie were mostly asian-americans (most werent japanese chicks at all) from L.A. not native japanese chicks. Dont get me wrong, real japanese chicks are hot but they dont look liek the ones from the moviesFkid

Are you sure about that one?

Japanese Schoolgirl Watch: Cosplayroom

Many japanese gals lead double lives: Mild-mannered students in plain-Jane uniforms by day; French maids, furries, and goth Lolitas by night. Legions run around Tokyo, wheeling suitcases full of makeup and costumes. But Superman had a phone booth - where are schoolgirls supposed to suit up? Luckily, Japanese company COS-Pa has introduced tiny dressing rooms for women in the trendy Shibuya district, where 500 to 700 yen (roughly $5 to $6) buys 30 minutes of private mirror time, free Wi-Fi, beauty supplies, and a nonalcoholic beverage. Says COS-Pa's owner firm, "Ladies should not have to get beautiful in a bathroom."

Start getting experience.

You can't just walk up to one of the top game dev's and say "I want a job."

What is it that you want to do in the industry? Try getting a job with Square Enix and America and see eventually if you can transfer. Their US headquarters are in California.

Also, don't make a decision to move someplace cause of a movie, REALLY REALLY think about it. I always wanted to move to California, always dreamt of if, and now I live here, and yah know what? I miss my friends, family, NYC, etc, etc and am working now to move back. Things aren't always what you seem.

Now keep in mind I moved from NY to CA, just imagine moving from the East Coast of the US all the way to Japan. Your dealing with such a culture and life style shock that you may absolutely hate.

Visit there. Learn about the way the Japanese lifestyle and whether its what you want.

Well good luck with that dream. As others said -- what you see in the movies and in books dont even dive into their culture.

They are very xenophobic, they have a high suicide rate, low birth rate, etc -- I love their old culture but that old culture is dying. I would love to visit whatever is left of old Japan, check out some of their crazy tech toys and all that but I would never want to live there.

If you want to work for Square Enix -- then you should move here to California. And just in case you didnt already know -- getting far in the gaming industry is tough as most people start off with six month contracts. Not sure if thats how it works in Japan -- but I can't imagine they would be as lenient there as they are here in regards to the gaming work environment.

That'd be practically the game designer, one of the highest positions. On big games, you wouldn't have anything liek that for a long time, and only if you're good enough. At first, you might be one of the guys who builds parts of the environment, or does some of the programming, but you won't have power like what you said up there too easily, unless you're in a very small company where they have nearly no other workers on a game.

I was more thinking of the 5th criteria. I find it a bit unfair that they'll only accept you if you renounce your previous citizenship.

Hmm okay, here's some advice:

1. Learn to speak perfect japanese

2. Go for the advanced economics or Computer Science programs at Uni.

3. Get some experience.

I don't understand why any Westerner would move to Japan, aside from the military. they're intensley ethnocentric and exclusive.quiglythegreat

Do some research. It depends on wether their culture and society appeals to you.

Okay, well if you move to Japan, I imagine you would make some japanese friends. So what's the problem?

So your video is representative of the whole Japanese society? What if I used the KKK as an example of how welcoming immigration is in America? Or the BNP in Britain? All countries have their xenophobic nutters who operate just within the law, Japan is no exception.

I'm not talking about culture, I'm talking about a national tendency to exclude foreigners.

Excuse me, did you actually watch the video? Many of the signs shown required foriegners to be accompanied by a Japanese friend. Kinda like not being able to get into some high-cl@ss club unless you know someone inside. Hmm..
