[QUOTE="Lonelynight"][QUOTE="clayron"]Why would I join the military to fight in a war involving two countries I've never even been to? That makes no sense.THE_DRUGGIE

I'm sure most soldiers in WW2 never been to Europe or Asia either.

They were drafted (not all of them, but still quite a bit of them).

Membership in the US military has been on a voluntary basis since the end of the Vietnam War.

We drafted 1 million people and had a combined military force of a few million by the end of WWII.

You mean in the military? I'm looking to get out of the military, so probably not. I'd go over with the private military if I was paid enough, though. Does that count asa Yes?

The war would be over before you would get deployed.

South Korea has all the means they need to wipe out North Korea right now. There is just no point to a costly war like that. South Korea doesn't even need any help.

Wasdie

That is true. But the Korean War stared when the North Koreans steamrolled whatever was in the path and made their way down Soul before anyone knew what was happeneing. then a few nations declared that the agression must be stopped and sent their troops to push back the NKPA. Then China got involved. Then for a few years, it was WWI style of fighting with modern weapons. An amistice was signed, but the two Koreas are still technically at war.

Even if they are, it still does make perfect sense for someone to fight for a country he has never been to.(Which was my main point)

You made that statement, and keep repeating it. But the point has no basis. I think you just like saying it.

Actually, unlike today, South Korea back in the 50s was not prepared for war. When the US (actually the UN) entered the war, they steamrolled to the chinese borders. North Korea suffered probably one of the worst defeats in military history. However China decided to jump on the bandwagon of the west vs. east, communism vs. capitalism societies crap.

Today China is a economic free market and has major economic allies with pretty much every nation that is not North Korea. The Chinese wouldn't bother to get invovled as it is pointless to break those extremely profitable alliances.

It is a lot, but at the time we faced the Axis of Evil (the real one, not the Bush Jr. one) and they had combined army of nearly 10 million soliders. It was out of necessity.

Today numbers don't mean squat. We fire a cruise missle from a ship 500kms away from a target and still hit the target between the eyes.

So you think they would commit economical suicide over a country that actually does nothing to aid China in any way except give them tons of refugees trying to get the hell out of North Korea?

Hell no.

Let North and South Korea shoot each other up with missiles. It's their problem. Don't need to get the U.S. involved in their crap

slamminjammin69

Considering the fact SK is one of our "bro's", and we have thousands of troops stationed over there, we're sort of obliged to be involved. I seriously doubt NK will put up the frustration that the Vietcong or insurgents have given us.

I have no problem with you disagreeing with me. I have an issue with you saying that most soldiers in WW2 had no problem fighting for a country they had not been to prior to the armed conflict for two reasons: 1. In WW2 soldiers weren't fighting for another country. They were fighting for their own country on foreign soil. 2. China has indeed changed, but I feel that some country will help NK if it does come to blows. If iots not China, then myabe Russia will help. But some country WILL help NK. I can just feel it.

Why join the military when it already has enough resources and men to deal with the enemy? Why risk your life? Because you have some deep desire to fight or feel like you got some patriotic duty? I wouldn't sign up unless my countries sovereignty was at stake and the chances of North Korea lasting longer then a few months in a war is laughable.

Well if there was some serious mess up like China declaring war on South Korea and NATO again I would probably join... I'm not much of a fighter, but I hate when oppresive systems try to force their will onto other people, and I would fight for that... But China will probably just delcare war on North Korea also, so there is realy no issue if you ask me.

[QUOTE="SeraphimGoddess"]I don't want to join either Koreas' army.LastCaveMan

wouldn't NATO be involved?

NATO:North Atlantic Trade Organization. No, NATO would not be involved. To answer your question though; I would go where my country asked me to go, but the chances of putting a large amount boots on the ground in Korea would be very slim, even if a full blown war would break out. More than likely, a MEU would be sent to where they are needed as a first responder, and then a carrier battle group would arrive a day or so later. The US mission would include a combat one, but one fought from the air, gaining easy air superiority for bombing missions etc. However, I do not believe that any war will break out between the two countries, as North Korea is merely trying to bolster it's image with a new change of power in the works. A full blown conflict between the US and it's allies and North Korea would be horribly one sided. And the other communist states like China would more than likely not even consider war, as for one they are not the same China as we once fought back in the early 50's, and they would not risk another world war on their hands.

Didn't the US's involvement in the Korean conflict already end badly? What makes you think if they started a war the US, or any NATO country for that matter, would go and "help"? I doubt NK would have any means of sustaining a conflict with anyone for an extended period of time. They're country is starving as is.

I dunno about that. There are a fair number of people who claim to be pacifists, and there are actually a few who'd really stick to their guns (or lack of them) if they or their loved ones were actually threatened. I think what you mean to say is there's a soldier in most people.
