my neighbor owes me $40 and was supposed to give it to me last week. he keeps having reasons as to why he doesn't have it. it was that his boss hadn't paid him yet, which if that's true then i got nothing wrong with that, just give me the money when he gets paid. i last talked to him on thursday or friday last week and he told me his boss was supposed to be paying him on friday, if not then he was going to go to her house to get his check, so he said he would definitely have the money. i left friday night to go out of town after i got off work, but i told him i was going to be coming back today. i said "if i call you when i'm coming back in town, are you going to have the money for me?" he said "of course." i've called him 3 times today and sent a text and he hasn't responded to anything. on my way home i passed a bar that i know he goes to and i saw his car outside, so i know he has money to spend. he drinks too damn much and has even wrecked his car and then lied to the police, saying that he got a ride home from the bar and next thing he knew his car was stolen (the police questioned the bar owner to see if this story was true and the owner told him he drove home drunk and crashed his car). i don't really give a s*** how much he drinks but i want my damn money and if he has money, he needs to be giving it to me instead of spending it.

i've been friends with him for awhile so i don't want to get ugly about it but it's pissing me off.

this kid is sketchy and i know he owns knives, and he probably carries one on him most of the time, and i don't own any knives (aside from like kitchen knives) or guns, i figure that is some important information.

what should i do about this situation?

I think you're going too far for just $40. But that's just me. Be assertive and tell him enough is enough, and you want your $40 one way or another.

I'd probably just forget if I loaned someone $40. Not nearly enough for me to care if it's ever paid back. Certainly wouldn't loan that person any more money until it was paid, though. And I'd only loan an amount I cared about to my family and best friends. But they're the types that would never ask for money (or need it).

That's why I don't loan money. The problem with $40 is it's enough that you care but not enough to do anything about. :P

i know $40 isn't much but when i make just over $8/hour, sometimes $40 is how much a make for a whole shift. i'm not going to lend him any more money, even after i do get this back.

I recommend stealing something from him and tell him "you'll get it back when you pay me". I recommend getting a jack and take the tires from his car, a used tire goes for like 15 bucks.

I rarely ever loan money. Either I'll give it to you to keep or I won't. Saves drama from me trying to get it back from you if I let you borrow it.

Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to just give you a grand and forget about it. But $40, I could give that to a buddy and tell them to just keep it.

Personally I never loan money. If a friend asks me for money, if I have it to spare, I'll just give him the money. That way if he does pay me back, great, added bonus. If not, then I've lost nothing I wasn't prepared to lose.

Just so everyone is clear, stealing, no matter how justified you may feel, is still stealing. I doubt the "he owes me $40" defense would hold up in court.

Bad word choice on my part, you're "borrowing" his tires until he pays you back.

he wouldn't do that, but if i tried to get physical then he might

but $40 isn't enough to fight someone over. i put the part about him having a weapon in case anyone was going to say i should beat him up or something.

It'd still be stealing if he wished to press charges. I'm not sure that selling them helps your case ether.

Forty Dollars?

I'm still trying to obtain the $6,500 that I'm owed for freelance work that I completed---100% in accordance with the specs that I was given---15 months ago!

I was a subcontractor to somebody who couldn't deliver on his portion of the work. The client refused to pay for the partially completed project, leaving the main contractor too broke to pay me.

Hey, the guy is clearly wrong in the situation, but to be completely honest with you I would imagine having a little more foresight and not having loaned him the money to begin with (make up an excuse next time), so being there is already a lesson to learn here you can cut your losses and move on, or use your best judgment on how to approach him in person (if you believe he is violent).

My only advice is to not get others involved in the business between you two.

Depends on who it is, how much is owed, and how well I am doing financially. Right now where I am financially, I can't afford to forgive any debt... but if I had some savings, I probably wouldn't have any problems forgiving a debt of a couple thousand dollars for friends or family, and a couple hundred for a stranger.

$15? Glad I don't owe anyone money... mine go for $300 a piece used. And that's just the tires...

Yeah, if the collateral was agreed upon beforehand. But sneaking onto his property, taking some random thing and calling it "collateral" is definitely illegal.

You should let the money go, and take this as a lesson earned.

Never let someone borrow money unless you're okay with never getting it back.

Yeah, that logic will totally fly. You kinda have to agree upon collateral beforehand.

I rarely, rarely lend money (I can't afford it anyhow), but if I do so I do it under the assumption that I'll probably not be getting it back. If that turns out to be the case, I'll not give them anything or trust them from then on. $40 is not worth getting violent over. If it's in the hundreds or thousands, take it to small claims court.

The only logical way to solve this is to get physical with him. He's got a knife? Then you get a BIGGER one, preferably a sword.

I don't like lending money, I am not a bank. But I am good with my money with means I always have some that I have no intention on spending. Then people ask to borrow it, I very rarely lend it out, depending on why they need it. I never say to them, 'give it to me on friday.' I TELL them, 'I'm getting it back on Friday.'

This is exactly why you don't lend money to friends no matter how good of friends you are because stuff like this always happens. I wouldn't let that crap fly though imo. We could no longer be Friends if i were in that situation. Yeah $40 isnt a ton of money but its more about what it represents. It says that he doesn't respect or like you and only sees you as a free atm. A true friend would not do that and would have paid back the money when the said they were unless something major came up.

False. Instead bring a gun. When you come face to face with the guy, tell him: 'Why'd you bring a knife to a gun fight, friendo?'

This guy's violent and a heavy drinker? Why did you lend him money in the first place?

I'd have assumed I wouldn't get that $40 back tbh. Accept it as a life lesson and move on.

This. I used to lend friends in high school money every now and then when they needed it. After having lent out about $50 and only getting $20 back. I decided to never lend to someone unless they were family or a close friend.

That's why you have a witness sign them.
