Well I'm not Muslim. But lots of Muslims I've heard say that he doesn't speak for them, which is obvious.

I'm not Muslim, but that's like saying, that Adolf Hitler spoke for every German, right before WWII. Obviously he didn't, so you can't assume that every Muslim follows Bin Laden. And believe it or not, Al-Qaeda and Iran's government are totally against each other. Both are Muslim, but they are like Catholics and Protestants, they don't believe the exact same things.

No Muslim in his right mind anyway, most of his followers consist of young social rejects, Al-Qaeda is basically a cult with guns.

First of all, the question was posed to MUSLIMS so it looks like every single one of the previous posts should not have occured as nary a one mentioned they were muslim and gave THEIR OWN opinion. But I'll throw my 2 cents into this mess. FACT: Bin Ladin's writing ARE heavily saturated in Koranic scripture. He justifies everything he says. Problem is he takes his ideology straight from the 7th century and it's horribly incompatible with the modern world (we've seen the results). I know this, because I've actually read his fatwahs - i've taken classes on terrorism. Of course there are verses in the Koran that prohibit suicide and killing of innocents. Bin Ladin's rationalizes his way around this by calling suicide martyrdom and he claims that when you're attacking a democracy, everybody votes - therefore no one is innocent. The only way for radical Islam to calm down and stop blowing stuff up is for the Muslim world to condemn that twisted view of the religion - and for the West to support that effort. It's the theology that's the true enemy. My professor had a great analogy for it. It's like the Rings. The "Lord" is long gone but anyone (Bin Ladin) can come along and find a "ring of jihad". Until the rings are destoryed, it'll never end. Of course this is all my opinion, based off of some facts. But in closing I'd like to again point out the question in the original post was addressed to Muslims so I hope we can hear some of you guys as well.

FACT: Bin Ladin's writing ARE heavily saturated in Koranic scripture. He justifies everything he says.atayl22

If you take it out of context, yes, everything he says is backed up by the Qur'an. For example, one of the favorites is this verse:

"Fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)."

- Qur'an 9:5

...but in context, this page gives an excellent explanation of what it really means:

This verse was revealed during a historical period when the small Muslim community had entered into treaties with neighboring tribes (Jewish, Christian, and pagan). Several of the pagan tribes had violated the terms of their treaty, secretly aiding an enemy attack against the Muslim community. The verse directly before this one instructs the Muslims to continue to honor treaties with anyone who has not since betrayed them, because fulfilling agreements is considered a righteous action. Then the verse continues, that those who have violated the terms of the treaty have declared war, so fight them... (as quoted above).

Directly after this permission to fight, the same verse continues, "but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them... for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." The subsequent verses instruct the Muslims to grant asylum to any member of the pagan tribe/army who asks for it, and again reminds that "as long as these stand true to you, stand ye true to them: for God loves the righteous."

Yep, they are all members of al Al-Qaeda. Also, all Christians are members of the KKK.

Anyway, do you really think anyone would answer a serious "yes" here if they DID agree with his ideas? Why would someone who hated western culture even be on this website reading the forums?

On top of that, I don't know if I necessarily believe that most of those tapes really are bin Laden, but that is another matter...

Al-Qaeda and Iran's government are totally against each other. Both are Muslim, but they are like Catholics and Protestants, they don't believe the exact same things.
remmbermytitans

Yeah, Sunnis and Shiites have not historically got on well. It's all about who the next religious leader after Mohammad's grandson was. Mohammed's grandson wanted to make his teacher the next leader, whilst islamic tradition said that it should be the nearest relative, which was his uncle. This conflict caused a huge schism in the religion, and the two sides ( I think the shiites followed the teacher but I can't remeber for certain) have never reconciled. So Iran have nothing to do with Al-Qaeda.

Edit: Yep, my Religious Studies teacher is an idiot, just googled it so discard any information in this post.

What am I thinking of then? what caused this schism? I'm sure that that was what I was taught at school, though it's quite possibly rubbish as the teacher is an idiot.

Not really. Most people in the US look upon the KKK with utter disgust and anger. The KKK needs police protection when they have a parade or march as most people are throwing objects and giving them the finger.

Regarding Bin Laden, everytime I see a muslim leader comment on him in the US - it's always "We don't agree with his actions BUT such and such". There's a difference between condemning something and unconditionally condemning something. Bin Laden calls for the murder of innocents, there's no rationalizing that.

The Muslims have done enough to condemn Bin Laden and his compatriots. I don't know how it is in America but Hizb-ut-Tahrir needs police protection everytime they protest or have one of their marches, and they're not even pro-Bin Laden.

I'm a Muslim from Malaysia, and no, Osama Bin Laden does not speak for me. He claims what he's doing is right and what he's doing is for all Muslims, but he's not. He's a big liar.
