If your 11 year old son asked to buy Gears Of Gar would you let him?

I would let my kid play a violent game like Gears or Resident Evil on one condition. He has to write a 2 page essay on its artisitic merit its appeal to him and why he wants to play it. If he can give me a paper that meets the criteria I shall allow him to buy it. Once he turns 14 I don't care anymore.

No, I'd say 11 is too young for Gears.

No. My children wouldn't be allowed to play any M rated game until they were 16. And if they played before then at a friends house, or on their own I'd bump it up to 18 because they didn't respect the rules of the house.

Children need discipline.

Apparently it's a fish. So it's a robotic fish. That doesn't sound so bad. :)

No one can really answer that unless they actually have a son. I'm guessing I wouln't want that, though.

Sixteen seems a little harsh.  And, you do know they can buy M rated games at seventeen, right?  It isn't all that hard to hide a DVD case.

meh part of the fun of being a kid is sneaking contraband. I'd say in the end it comes down to the indivudual kid. but each parent his own. although I don't see the 18 bump as productive.

Of course. I'd let my five year old have it if they like it and think they can play it. It's just a game, not allowing your child this is the lazy way out in parenting IMO.

Why deny them that right, when they're human too?

I grew up playing M games since the age of five, and I don't see any reason to deprive my kid or kids of that if they really want to play a video game. My parents sure as hell didn't have a problem with it, so I don't see why I should senselessly restrict the interests of my children.

I probably wouldn't give a kid Gears of War until he was 13. If he was 11 I'd give him something intellectually stimulating like Civilization :D

I played MGS in kindergarten. The salesperson told my dad it was rated M so he asked me if I really wanted it and I said yeah. So, yeah I would let my kids play mature games whenever they wanted.

Well every human is born with the right to do whatever he wants with his body including what media he chosees to ingest but we as parents must act as the necessary evil and moderate what our kids see.

No, i feel like GeOW is too violent of a game for his age. If it were a T game, i would play it with him. M games are off limits for a few years though.

That means you're free to buy videogames. . . and that's if you meet the age requirements, like with alcohol. And it still doesn't make buying/playing games a right by any stretch of the imagination.:|

The ESRB rating system is a guideline, not a final word of the law. In fact, the ESRB was created in order to avoid regulation of video game sales by the federal government, so you couldn't possibly compare that to the purchasing and consumption of alcohol.

As long as he didn't play it online with that... "comunity" (if you can call it that).

I was never affected by games, so I would assume my decendants would have similar mental normality and responsibility.

I am more likely to say why are you playing that macho ****? When there are some real games you can play right here.
