[QUOTE="jointed"]Chinese and Italian. Japanese FTL.Jandurinit was either chinese or japanese for me. why japanese ftl? It's useless and ridiculously hard. Sure, if you want to watch anime series on youtube without subtitles or play japanese videogames then I guess it's kind of useful...but other than that, it's completely and utterly useless. Blah.
It's useless and ridiculously hard.jointedRight. So how cool would it be to just have it beamed into your brain? I figure once you've got fluency in the character creation, you could probably give mandarin a fair try.

Sure, but why would I want to know it...it's not as if it's a good gateway language like latin or anything like that and I'm not a japanophile.

You Japanophiles really annoy me! Why do so many people want to learn Japanese even though its only spoken in Japan, which is not a big place, as you know. How about learning a practical language instead of wanting to be able to understand lame cartoons. Weaboo'spushrhymesHmm... probably because alot of pop culture comes from Japan or maybe people just like how the language sounds? This isn't a discussion about what languages you should learn if you could, but what you'd personally like too.

I don't even watch anime :| Only some movies now and then. I just like the Japanese culture and language
Spanish and Japanese.Jandurin
^This. :D
Knowing Japanese would be really useful when a game isn't released anywhere else...
[QUOTE="Vanadium2k8"]You anti-Japanophiles annoy me - God forbid people learn languages to make their lives more FUN and be all-around more HAPPIER people. No no and no, you should only learn languages because you live in the country or there are high amount of speakers, you are wasting your time otherwise, the only language you should be learning is French or Spanish because they're useful, I might not know them, but everyone has to know them. Why would you want to learn languages so you can be a happier person? Sounds stupid to me. /rantAnthraxBunnyI see what your saying and I agree with it entirely. But do you have to sound like your our mom? I mean, I'm not trying to be rude but...
It was sarcasm :?
The main reason why I don't like japanophiles is probably because I don't consider them human. The fact that I think capital punishment should be implemented to get rid of them is probably also a large factor in my utter contempt for them.jointedso wait, what about the Japanese? Are they okay?

Weaboo'spushrhymesagree, its ridiculous. reading this thread has really cracked me up XD "MGS was made in japan, so it must be an amazing place" personally, id love to learn Cantonese (hong kong), or french (paris).

I was surprised at how many people want to learn Japanese. I learned it for my international business cert. Not so I can watch anime that "isnt out here".SajedeneAnd I learnt it because I wanted to, and since I did it because I wanted to, I learnt it faster than most people (8 months) - how does learning it for business reasons make you a better person?

Question: what the hell should I learn first: alphabet systems or words? I'm not sure where to start.

The best way to learn a language is through immersion. Otherwise you'll just sound like a walking translation book. Find someone to converse with is my recommendation. Learning the alphabet system can come after you are able to converse as it will be easier to associate symbols together with words you understand.[QUOTE="Vanadium2k8"][QUOTE="Sajedene"]I was surprised at how many people want to learn Japanese. Alphabets definitely, romaji is no good. Imagine if Japanese were learning English through their alphabet, Apple would become "apperu" - using English for Japanese isn't THAT bad, but it's definitely going to slow you down later on.Start here: www.iknow.co.jp , sign up and go for the Hiragana and Katakana courses - of course the website is not enough, you have to drill those characters into your head, that means a lot of reading and lot of writing :P
It takes time, but shouldn't take longer than two weeks :)
I also recommend reading this site www.alljapaneseallthetime.com, (after reading the intruduction/about page, go to Table of Contents) use it like you would the bible, it's how I went from zero to be able to play Japanese video games without a dictionary within 8 months.

In that case, I have somewhat of a head start. Yaaayyy!
