People can just come and go?

How is the government supposed to tax them?

How do you keep track of ANYTHING?

As long as they're not criminals (as in, they just want an honest job in order to make a living) I completely agree with you, TC.

This, the US is not the only country with boarders, regulations and so forth. There has to be a line drawn or it could get bad.

Well I believe some immigrants already pay taxes now and if more came, more would be taxed I'm guessing. We could do a consumption tax to make sure the government gets some money right?

What do you mean by that? Couldn't it also get BETTER?!?!? Do you think all immigrants are here to do bad things? You're not looking at both angles. EDIT: and to make myself a little more clear, I do believe their should be a certain set of simple rules, regulations, and documentation to work alongside this, but the whole mess just sounds like a, "you're not welcome here unless you do all these things first" kinda thing. Turns me off.

i personally think we need to quit helping illegal immigrants but... at the same time make it way easier to become a u.s citizen so it would be a win win situation for both sides...

A limit to people 'coming and going' as you put it. By right, the citizens of that country should have first priority over immigrants. Not only that, if people are just coming and going, then (as someone mentioned earlier) how would the government be able to tax them?

There'd probably be too much cultural autonomy, and people would create borders based on that.

For a industrial nation, the US is rather lax on immigration.

Japan and much of Europe are much more restrictive at getting citizenship.

Sure, let me know when they took away your job. Actually I am in process of taking away your job as a legal immigrant turned to citizen.magicalclick
suppressed wages are a real threat and why average american wages havent seen much of an increase over the past decade. In economics its supply vs demand... and generally if worker demand is higher than supply... wages will increase... but if you use immigration and migrant workers to inflate supply, then wages dont increase. Its how employers manage to keep wages artificially low.

Now, legalizing all would not be a prob. But extending that policy say 20 or so more years = big prob.

ill say what i say to all liberals that think this is a good idea. do you TC sleep with your door wide open? no of course not the reason is you lock it so no one breaks in. the same thing applies put a door on the border and lock it make sure no one breaks in and much like in your own home open the door if its someone you want to come in. if someone did break in do you either shoot them or make them a cup of coffee? me personally i shoot intruders but maybe im just crazy like that so yes i am saying if your illegal and in america right now....gtfo your a law breaker anyway by the very name of being illegal. never mind the fact the law actually says to deport you. i also maintain since your illegal you arent entitled to any american citizen rights. if you cant produce proof of citizenship deportation is in order. if your very unruly and committed quite a bit of crimes like felony status crimes. well sucks to be you i say lock you and throw away the key.

Open boarders just encourages economic movement. People who have no interest in the country, it's culture, it's laws etc. They just move wherever the money is.

That idea does not work if you have a welfare system that pays out more than the minimum wage in other nations. Somewhere like Somalia could do it but not a developed nation.

I'm not so sure that would be a good idea. In a couple of months the majority of people living near the mexican border would probably start setting up camp in cities in the southern United States, basically squatting in abandoned houses and whatnot. There's also no real way to tax them, or keep track of numbers...so you would have a major part of the populace who would be taxed, and a minority of the populace that wouldn't be.

I'd rather a two-tier system of entry into the country. The first tier is that anyone can enter the country if they can prove they will add something to the country. Basically this is anyone who has skills necessary to obtain a job in one of the areas the economy needs workers. These people will need to financial assistance, and thus there should be as many invited as the economy enables. The second tier are for refugees. They can be fleeing war, famine, disease, etc. A certain number of people should be allowed to enter the country as refugees, and given financial assistance to establish themselves. HOWEVER, they should need to get jobs and repay any financial assistance they received over a period of time. That's my humble opinion ...

2 reasons why that's a bad idea. One, the US likely wouldn't handle such a population increase very well. And jobs are already scarce as it is. A huge wave of immigrants would ruin the US economy.

It would be nice to have free world, but only if they don't come over like crazy.. well, I don't mind move to Europe right now if they let me. I can just go anywhere in the world and settled where I liked most. would be nice if it's simple like that.

Because the economy would collapse the poorer countries people immigrate from would fall apart. In the long run, it would do massive damage to the global economy. It may seem harsh not letting people immigrate to a better country, but you have to understand. In the long run it leaves both sides better off.

That's only a problem if we keep drugs illegal. Diseases aren't anything to worry about since immigrants have been coming for years and nothing deadly has come yet. Crime doesn't automatically come with opening the border which is what so many people here seem to believe.

Current citizens have all the resources to get the jobs that illegal immigrants are "stealing" from us. And what's wrong with lowering minimum wage? If someone wants/decides to work for $2.25 an hour (which happens in this country anyway) then why should an employer be forced to pay them more than they're looking for?

Yea seriously, I live in Canada and even I see this is a horrible idea. As if the US needs more people to work in a mcdonalds at lower than minimum pay who can barely speak a word of english, can't feed their family's which could lead them to commiting crimes to help their family rather than help the country (I doubt the border hoppers have any decent education anyways, if they did they wouldn't be border hopping). Let alone all the cultural discrepancies it would be bring. Think of how there are parts of the US where there are only red neck racist white people, or where there are only gangs of black people. Does anyone really want to start adding a mexican group into that mix? I have nothing against mexicans, but NO country should just remove border control. We have laws for a reason.

No. That would technically make every human a US citizen. People would come and go and take what they want and do nothing could be done about it. The United States of America would be the Wal-mart of countries.

This is a surprisingly good analogy.
