I didn't say he claims to be some omnipotent being. You, however, treat him like one, even to the point of ignoring, dismissing or making shallow justifications for his failings and inconsistencies. Kinda like how some people do with their favorite deity and holy texts.

worlock77

None of your criticisms of me are even remotely relevant to what we were discussing. As a reminder, you were attempting to explain how Ron Paul was dishonest and/or inconsistent.

I did, you just refuse to see it. If the man lived up to his own talk he never would have turned to the UN in such a manner, nor indeed have tried to rob his supporters of what they worked so hard, investing their own time and their own money, to build. Face it, your deity is a hypocrite.

Plus he's racist ;)

He hasn't be officially tied to anything, but the NSA has collected phone data from some major phone companies, the Internal Revenue Service (taxes) put unwarranted focus on fringe Conservative groups, and he's a minority. Some people are still pissed about that.

And someone in the IRS also leaked confidential documents submitted by the group NOM in 2012.

Nothing's gonna change if people keep voting for the two major parties.

one_plum

Agreed. The differences between the parties are so small, that we are essentially choosing for the lesser of two evils. They are both destroying our country.

Sadly, it will be a long time till the libertarian party can gain enough support to even split the vote.

That is shameful to write off the recent white house scandals by trying to associate the outrage over them with racism. People are disillusioned with Obama because he is proving himself to be a power-hungry megalomaniac. It has nothing to do with race.

He did not try to rob his supporters of anything. He just misunderstood how domain names work because he is old and inexperienced with the internet. And he turned to the UN rather than use the American courts because the US government has given much of its authority to the UN. He did not have a choice.

It really depends on who you talk to. If you're talking to the Democratic constituency, it's largely because he's continued a number of Bush era policies on the defense side and the fact that his administration pressured some journalists while investigating intelligence leaks . If you're talking to the Republican constituency, they're upset over those items as well as some other items they see White House directed scandals in such as the IRS investigating 501c(4) organizations and Benghazi.

As far as I know, the details are still coming out about that. Right now it sounds like those companies sold the data to the NSA through proxies, but the basis for that conclusion is pretty lean. If that's the case, though, it's hard for people to make a legitimate case for being up in arms about such matters in a society in which they willfully provide vast amounts of information to Facebook, Google, etc. under agreements that allow those entities to sell their information to the highest bidder. It's kind of like being mad at the NSA now after cheering on the Patriot Act years ago.

According to some of the news reports, the court order for Verizon contained a gag order that legally prohibited them from publicly disclosing the fact that they were ordered to surrender the information. Possibly because publicly admitting it may have tipped off people who they didn't want to tip off. Can't speak for the other companies but it isn't outside reason to assume their orders had similar gag orders in it.

At times, I would like to say that I am also done supporting this president. However, once I begin listening the Republican Party (or worse: the Tea Party or Libertarians), I end up feeling the need to support Obama by default. With the exceptions of Chris Christie and Marco Rubio, I don't feel the GOP is attuned to reality.

So you think this man is the savior of our country, yet he's too old and feeble to understand something as simple as the internet?

Oh, and he hasn't said anything more about it because he lost.

worlock77

You do not seem to understand Ron Paul's policies. Ron Paul does not claim to be some omnipotent being who is qualified to run your life, and that is why he wants to allow you the freedom to run it yourself. You do not need to understand how the internet works to understand the non-aggression principle.

I didn't say he claims to be some omnipotent being. You, however, treat him like one, even to the point of ignoring, dismissing or making shallow justifications for his failings and inconsistencies. Kinda like how some people do with their favorite deity and holy texts.

You and I may not see this President in terms of race, but some do. I have no doubt that if we had the first female President currently, she would be under extra scrutiny and get extra criticism. It isn't right, but it's part o human nature and the nature of our country.

Bullshit. Ron Paul understands the internet. He's utilized it plenty enough in his own campaigns. I find it funny that on one hand you try to paint him as the answer to everything that ails this country, and on the other hand you paint him as old and out of touch.

pretty much, and even then I doubt things would change much.  I think people overestimate just how much power and influence the president has.  It's not that he is failing because he is not trying, he is failing because he is being prevented from doing things.

With that said, he is doing pretty damn good relative to other Western countries currently.

MissLibrarian
He ordered the assassination of a US citizen without trial. He supports warrantless wire-tapping after promising to end it. He supported restrictive anti-protest laws. He supported laws that allow him to arrest and indefinitely detain people without trial. He further socialized medical care. As for the recent scandals, there are too many to keep track of (there apparently were two new ones exposed this morning), but a highlight would be the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) discriminating against conservative/libertarian groups by putting their requests for tax exemption status on hold for years, while requests from liberal organizations only took a few weeks to be dealt with.

A few notes, Lai: Obama did not order the assassination of a US citizen. The drone strike that killed an Al-Queda American did occur under his administration, but to infer the he micro-managed the strike is nonsense. This may seem to be a technicality, but it is an important distinction. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/22/american-citizens-drone-strikes_n_3321950.html Secondly, at the end of the Bush administration, warrantless wiretaps were no longer allowed on domestic soil under new FISA guidelines. Even the new NSA controversy over wiretaps shows the the FISA guidelines put in place in 2008 are still applicable. Warrants have been obtained in by law enforcement under the current administration. The controversy is over whether these warrants are justifiable, or whether they are a government overreach. Third, while it is true that he further socialized medical care, the reasons are based upon the status of the American health care system at the beginning of his presidency. At the start the Obama administration, 1/6 Americans did not have healthcare, stories of abuse or neglect by private health care providers were rampant, issues with pre-existing conditions or dropped coverage post illness were standard, among other issues. Obamacare, however flawed it may be, was an attempt to solve the problem. The private business model revolving around healthcare has only itself to blame for the implementation of greater socialized healthcare in US. Lastly, while the complaints in the IRS scandal are largely legit, there are other factors. Specifically, the groups the IRS was targeting were largely guilty of doing exactly what they are not allowed to do in order to classify as a 501c-4. 2/3 dollars raised during the last election were by conservative groups, and 2/3 of the groups were conservative as well. While the IRS actions were both clumsy and indefensible, pretending that there were any innocent victims on the issue is naive.

I don't know about evil, but it does take a very special brand of crazy to understand the job that the president does, all the animosity you will receive along with the pressure that they say is the equivalent of living two days for every single day of work along with being an incredibly lonely job, and for a person to believe they can handle it is crazy.

It leads to a system of leaving us only crazy people to vote for.

We were better off with Ron PaulAckad
Yes because he is the solution to all our problems. look it doesn't matter who we have in the white house. They are all lying politicians at the end of the day. And are people this dumb to think that the government doesn't spy on us.

Can someone explain to me, as an ignorant UKer, what Obama has done in particular to disillusion people recently?

Laihendi

It's not Obama, he's just a face. There's a much more sinister force behind the curtains...Kikouken

Funny considering the conservatives are allowing him to do the wiretapping.

I'll be very interested in seeing what the full transripts from the IRS interviews will hold. If they really do settle the scandal, and a conservative was behind the extra scrutiny of  Tea Party groups as Rep. Cummings suggests, then all of this will have been for nothing (or very little). And Darryl Issa will look even more like an asshat.
