film-guy just wikipedia'd prog music and now thinks he's an authority on it. it would explain why he mentioned godspeed you! and silver mt.nuclearaddict
Godspeed appears on many prog rock lists.

The truth is, the genre description is so general that there are confusing choices thrown in all the time.  Heck, I'm willing to accept Godspeed. There are bigger issues in this world.

actually I have been listening to prog rock for about 8 years, I did not wiki them ( we all know how accurate that site is) if I want to know a bands classification, I usually go to progarchives ( a good site for reliable info) anyway why would you think I get info from wikipedia?

Cummon, you know you love everything about the band except for Geddy Lee's voice, which makes their music unlistenable to you.

His vocals don't bother me all the time...it's just the feel or mood of the song that bothers me, I guess.

Rush is a pretty love it or hate it band. I'm lucky to be in the former.

One thing you cannot possibly argue against is that all three musicians are among the very best at their instruments.

If you're going by technicality, then most Rock music isn't very complex in general. If you're going by "feeling, soul, heart, etc." than it's all opinion,

Jazz fusion kinda meshes with prog in a few places.

Mahavishnu Orchestra is considered both.

i'd say that either classical and/or avant garde/experimental music is the most talented.... there's stuff 100's ofyears old that people will never be able to touch. and with the technology of toda, artist are constantly pushing experimentation forward.

no-one comes close to the sheer genius of bach, beethoven, thighpaulsandra or the hafler trio imo. hell even Can had their whacky experimental bits along with the rest of their krautrock stuff...

saying that, in modern music no-one even comes close to kraftwerk in terms of melody, which is something modern music is drastically lacking, since the 60's it's all been about the vocal. which 99% of the time is meaningless :|

Prog rock has been going on since the 60s, many believe it to be a dead genre now that progressive metal is making a come back ( aka tool) but prog rock has always shown talent throughout the years, even now prog rock has great bands just waiting to be discovered. A lot of rock music has roots in the blues ( chuck berry, louie armstrong ect) but much of prog rock is different, it is mostly deeply rooted in jazz rather than blues. Bands like King crimson, Jethro tull and early genesis are an example. Most rock music follows guidlines and bands are judged on how skilled their guitarists are in terms of ability and how rocking they are. But progressive rock constanly shows great guitarists who are yet to be matched in talent, here are 2 examples.

Robert fripp ( king crimson)

John Mclaughlin ( mahavishnu orchestra)

nobody, not hendrix, clapton etc has yet matched these two guys imo. prog rock in the mainstream eye may have died out a bit since the 60s-80s, but there are still tons of great bands to find. this site will help you find some of the best in modern music.

http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=37354&FID=3

prog rock will someday have another go at the mainstream, but right now the genre is focused on talent rather than success.

Film-Guy
Althgough I'm a 60's-80'srock fanatic I have to disagree composers like Beethoven and other classics wrote hour long pieces that never repeat and involve multiple instruments and parts which is much more than what Clapton (my favorite artist) or your Fripp guy can do

It keeps on skipping my message. I said Pink Floyd is also a somewhat Love/hate band

EboyLOL

That I am not sure about.  I've never met anybody who actively hated Pink Floyd (though maybe these people exist and I'm just sheltered).

Any band can and undoubtedly is a love/hate band.  Law of averages guys.

I disagree with the original statement. Talent is too subjective. I believe musical talent is the ability to make music or contribute to making music that people like to listen to. It's as simple as that. I don't like to listen to Jethro Tull music, but love Weezer. Jethro Tull's music takes much more technical skill but in the end Weezer, as simple as they are, sound better.

Tool is influenced by all of those bands you mentioned, and they are every bit as talented if not more so. If you don't listen to them, you really should. It's not "metal" at all, and it is extremely progressive.
