Interesting, I just found out one of Gamespot's reviewers is transgender.

[QUOTE="worlock77"]

[QUOTE="kayoticdreamz"] dont know my counsler i saw years ago always taught that was a sympton of depression self loathing and hating something it seems most that do a sex change go through at some point. couple this with the other emotional issues they go through i think it could be easy to class it as a mental illness. really most mental illnesses that you goto therapy for invovle some kind of mental stress or in ablity to accept who you are or a general sadness and self loathing. so while transsexuals dealt with it in a different way i think the emotions very much fall under mental illness. and no this isnt a transsexuals are wrong rant or anything of the sort just saying likely what they experience falls under a mental illness category.kayoticdreamz

- A counsler is not a psychairtrist.

- Even if they were yours is but one person out of a profession of tens of thousands. The concensus among the mental health profession is that being transgendered is not a mental illness.

- "I think" doesn't count for s*** against the opinions of a concensus of real actual professionals in the field.

so you saying depression doesnt include at least self loathing and hatred?

I didn't say a damn thing about depression. Try addressing what I said, not what I didn't say.

Oh look, the low level TC dropped by to make a thread providing enough "material" for people he knows exist in OT (and in general) to.... um "work with", and then is never heard of again.

The reason why we despise transphobic people is not because they simply hate transgender people. we hate them because of the pointless harm and pain that they cause. such as the beatings, murders, unfair treatment under the law, and family disownings of transgender people. We hate them because of what they do to harm others, not simply becuase of who they are. there is a big difference between the validity of our anger and theirs and there is an ENOURMOUS difference between our actions and theirs.

So now I'm heartless. Great, I have an opinion on something and I now have no heart. Thank you very much. Does my opinion hurt anyone? No. Am I going to hurt/kill anyone because of it? No. I just don't agree with it. But what does that do? It lies in my mind and creates an opinion. And my opinion doesn't affect how I treat anyone. I don't agree with the decision but I treat them like what they are, human beings.

Do I agree with homosexuality? No. But Iam never going to be mean or unkind to any of my homosexual friends.

I'm a republican in MA. all of my friends are liberals. Doesn't mean we don't get along, have fun, and help each other. They are my best friends.

You my friend are the ignorant and hateful one.

Hmmmm.... I'm going to speak my mind here and say I don't understand transgender people. I don't see why they have to pretend to be something they are not. They should be happy with the way they were born....TommyWieseau81
It's very easy for you to say that because you are probably straight, happy and fine with it. They don't feel that way at all. A lot of them feel very confused and such.

most trans people will agree that its a birth defect. they were born with "mind" of a women but the body of a male (or vice versa). They attempt to remedy this through surgery in order to make their outward appearance match their inward being.

but dont make the mistake in thinking that the fact that they want to change their body is the "defect." Or that the fact that their psyche is closer to that of the opposite gender is a negative thing.

Well, yes, that was what I was inferring. If I was on the side thinking that being transgender is a "psych disorder" I'd be smacking myself right now.

It's not a physical defect that affects daily life. It's a mental defect because they're not happy with the body nature gave them. There's nothing wrong with their body, they just want one of the other sex.

I don't understand how you can make this statement after all the information that's been given to you.

What is wrong with the body of the person? Are they missing legs? arms? No. They simply believe that they should be in the body of someone of the opposite gender. This is a mental issue, not a physical issue.

Interesting. In no way do I expect you to believe what I'm saying, but I have done some research (although like I said "I'm not going to claim that I know every detail about psychology nor the biology behind people who are trans and the like") unlike you. If you don't believe me, but haven't done research yourself, where is your basis for your argument?

HotFemale
@ HotFemale - While I whole heartedly agree with what you have said about admiring gamespot for not discriminating against her and other transgender people, and with no offence at all meant to you but, I am conflicted as on the one hand I agree that discrimination is wrong, but then I'm not sure if saying "you may be different but that is ok" is right and that surely the best way ahead is to ignore differences completely and to just treat people as they want and should be seen irrospective of what they may have been in the past.

That's just it, they already feel like they're pretending to be something they're not. They feel they're in the wrong body, and should have been born differently.

And just how do you know what goes into their decision making? It's not exactly a small decision, and I'm sure they've thought about it much more than you have.

Making decision based on feelings is being completely selfish. First off, your not thinking logically, Secondly, you disregard any one else feelings on the matter, and thirdly, it is purely a self gain, self esteem, and egotistical purpose. Would you want a leader who has all of the above qualities? I wouldn't either

Psychology is the most subjective science that exists. It's like trying to study an object, where the object is also the subject. The DSM considered homosexuality a mental illness 40 years ago. Anyway, psychology is not as objective as the physical sciences.

If depression can be considered a mental illness, so can being transgendered. As someone else mentioned, the two often come hand-in-hand.

- Even if they were yours is but one person out of a profession of tens of thousands. The concensus among the mental health profession is that being transgendered is not a mental illness.

- "I think" doesn't count for s*** against the opinions of a concensus of real actual professionals in the field.
