it should be more than encouraged if you've seen the 14 year old kid in the pic of the family the cat saved from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sorry leanorid, it just really bothers me when people spread rumors about weight lifting. In the future, when you're recommending something to a 14 year old who is about to start weight training, stay away from rumors.

I'm 14 turning 15 late august, and I have been doing weights for two and a half years! I'm double the size of all my friends, and about three/four times stronger. Build up slowly, and then progress from ther.

Yeah well i'l the same age, 5'11 and 145 pounds, and I have been doing weights for over two years. It doesn't stunt your growth, coz when I started I was 5'4. You sound big anyway so you don't have anything to worry about, just build up slowly and take it easy for the first month or so.

u have two choices here, if u do choose to do weights at this age u will stunt your growth and will not grow much at all. it is just best to do resistance training rather than weights. resistance training includes push ups, sit ups, chin ups, elastic band reps and other things like than. i am in the same position as u with weights, i will be turning 15 soon but i found out t is to early to start and i hav alot of growing to do. i play basketball so height, jump and stregth is essential but u must look at other sources of training to increase your muscle stregth. if u do start weights now u are at risk of damaging your spine by putting to much pressure on it an then stunting your growth.

some peoples body's are different and cannot handle the stress that weights cause. just because u reacted differently doesnt mean someone will react the same way. it also depends if u are naturly built or not, i am and in some cases bigger than people who do lift weights but that would make me part of the minority. always wait till 16 to avoid health problems.

I suggest to start when you're around 18-19. I started lifting weights when I was around 13-14. I'm 5'7'' now and if I could go back in time and stop myself, I would. If I were you I'd only do push ups, sit ups... anything which has nothing to do with weights.

i can see your very determend to start weights as soon as posible an your thought on answers which u like will be bias. start resistance excersises until u turn 16 or roughly around then. u will still get very big and if done consistantly and in a proper routine u can get very good results.

 60 sit-ups, 10 push-ups

im 14 btw. is this good enough???

There are many different workouts you can do, for starters you got to work major muscle groups together, Chest and Back, Arms are by themselves and legs are by themselves because they are used more and larger muscles. For Chest you can do Bench press, Chest press on a machine to work on the primary muscles regular bench would do that plus work on stabilization muslces. Pushups are great, Butterfly curls work your chest, you can look them up on google i dont really feel like explaining hand positions. Tricept dips, hammer curls for your forearms. For Bench Press i do this in reps, 12,10,8,6,5,3. 12 reps of a comfortable weight, take a break add some weight then do 10 and repeat until you get to 3. Other workouts are pretty straight foward 4 sets of 10 reps is pretty much the general plan to do. That benchpress worked for me i now can bench around 405 lbs, but that took many years to get to.

Don't do too much, but you should be fine. I started weight lifting (stopped, for the time being), last year. I was 12 and I'm 13 now. Don't push yourself too much though.

Yes that is all right, remember to eat around 6 meals a day though, and you are eventually going to need to change your workout plan because you will plateau and not get any stronger, there are plenty of other exercises for all muscle groups the you can use when you plateau

[QUOTE="SIapshot"][QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"]I would wait, i hear it does stump growth. Unless there is a reason. Dont do it to try to look tough and muscular, but if your doing it for a sport then I would say yes. But dont over do it.SIapshot

So.... if you're doing it for a sport, it doesn't stunt your growth?

Yes, it magically stops it.

Obviously, SaintLeonard said so.

Are your eyes ok because again you must not of read what i wrote. I said I hear it stumps growth, did I say personally "yes it does"? No I didnt actually, but ive had people who lifted and a doctor say it can stump your growth. Dont put words in my mouth.

Im even more confused than i was before making this topic, slapshot seems to know a lot but is only backed by like 2 ppl, everyone doesnt seem to know as much as him but more ppl say it will stunt my growth....can anyone get a link from a credible source or something saying yes or no to stunting growth

also, what exercises should i begin with, and how many reps and sets should i do

thanks everyone who has helped me so far:) and keep helping me:D

You can get all the information there is to get off the internet, but nothing takes the place of actual experience. Working out will no more stunt your growth than masturbating will cause hair to grow on your palm. I started lifting weights when I was 12, the same time I started playing football.

Normal, healthy, weight training is a great thing. Using supplements at your age is a different story. Stick to the weights and do it naturally (untill you're older). Don't listen to rumors about lifting weights, most of the posters in this thread who said "stunt your growth" never touched the iron.
