Yes, it is the most powerful nation on Earth. Of course, the US military withdrew from Vietnam and China does pose a threat to us, but this is only because the US is set back by one thing: Mercy.
That's right, mercy.
Take this into account: The United States has the largest and most advanced Air Force and Navy in the world. The US military and Marines are also themost advancedin the world, though not the largest, they are definitely one of the larger. Their capacity to cause large scale destruction is unparalleled, limited only by this thing we call mercy. Why isn't every missile packed to the brim with explosives that can destroy half a city, why don't they ever completely destroy a nation, why do they refrain from using biological and toxic weapons? Because they have mercy for innocents. If they unleashed the full might of the US armed forces, they would have destroyed the world 7 times over, literally.
The US military does not do any of this, because they are merciful, and as humane as possilbe.

Of course, there are other things that come into play. Politics, morale, the number of soldiers, economics, international support/pressure...
But in terms of pure firepower/destructive capabilities, the US military is second to none. This why it is the most powerful? Would we win war in the world simply from technology alone? No. But we can certainly destroy it.
Also, given we had an ample number of soldiers, domestic and international support, and high morale, does that make us the most powerful nation on Earth?Â
Combined with the military's destructive powers, I believe yes.

Thats something to be proud of....Just because a country has a powerful army and doesn't attack doesn't mean it is the greatest.
Although Genghis Khan ordered everything killed in their sight, the army still spared many Sung Dynasty scholars and Huns. Not to mention that Mongolia didn't frequently attack further countries after Genghis Khan.
The Spanish Armada didn't obliverate every single British ship when they had the chance.
The British empire didn't just send it's army to every single african town and blast every inhabitant in the country.
So doesn't the US army. Does this make the US army merciful than previous armies?

Pretty much all the underhanded tactics you just named are illegal, this is why invasion would pretty much be the only option.

In other words, our army is civilized. No civilized (fights its battles in the open, under the rules of war) armed force can ever defeat an uncivilized (fights its battles in a savage manner, IE: the use of women and children as shields, without regard to the rules of war) armed force, no matter how hard it tries, as proven countless times in history starting from the Crusades, through to the American Revolution (despite help from most of continental Europe), to the Vietnam Conflict, and up to the present War in Iraq. It's not so much mercy, after all, we fought and won against Japan by being unmerciful, except in the end (no merciful nation wrongfully imprisons 100,000 of its citizens because of their own, or their family's country of origin), as well as against Spain in the late 19th century, and Germany (albeit to a lesser extent) during the first World War. If we had mercy during any of those conflicts then we would have lost, simply put. We fought against enemies that believed so powerfully in their cause that to show anything but unyielding ferocity would have meant the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocents, if there are innocents during wartime.
The problem with the American Armed Forces is that they have forgotten their uncivilized roots. They have forgotten how to fight against an uncivilized enemy, and therefore, will lose any fight against an uncivilized foe. Of course there are such things as the Green Berets and the Special Forces, but such units are usually a small percentage of the total armed services.Â

I have to agree that the US has become the most powerful country in the history of the world. Even Rome wasn't this powerful. The US can easily dominate every single army in the other 270 countries in the world. However, this is the main reason why many countries think of the US as a potential threat. Although the US would never mindlessly go out to war, the way they invaded Iraq shivers Europe and Asia to the bones.

Of course it does not. Britian has a powerful military, but they don't go destroying things, and that certainly does not make them the greatest. What makes their military great however, is their ability to use what they have as best they can.
The US military pretty much has the best, and when used best they are the best.

China has outdated air forces and their Navy is pathetic compared to ours. Their largest army? Poorly equipped, you won't see a Chinese soldier with the same kind of training running around wearing a bullet-proof vest while toting a M-16 in the dark with night vision on.
They don't even have stealth aircraft, or naval craft either.
Sure, they have the economy and national support to fight a direct war, but thats moot if they can't reach us.

It was a tie. And America killed MANY more of them than they did of us. We left because the public had turned against the war, and it was lasting a really long time. If you have the most powerful army on earth it would still be really hard to fight against guerillas in an unfamilliar jungle.
And the south vietnamese army just sucked alot. They were no help
Did the US complete their mission objective, to keep South Vietnam a non-communist state? No, we didn't, therefore we lost the Vietnam Conflict. The DRV and Viet Cong won the Vietnam Conflict because the whole of Vietnam was united under a communist dictatorship. If that isn't a victory scenario for the enemy, then I don't know what is.
Yea, the 'it was a tie' was sort of a joke, and i was planning on doing a joke post but then i sort of switched into seriousness there. The point is we didnt totally get our asses handed to us, and that it wasn't Vietnam's 'Great Military Power' that beat us.
It kind of was Vietnam's military that won it for them, despite their heavy losses. Ever hear of the Tet Offensive? Military disaster for North Vietnam, but their victory was not military, it was propaganda. It was that offensive, that was so bad for their military, that caused the American people to question the conflict, and if history has taught us anything, its that if the people don't support something, sooner or later, it will end. Which it did, and it was by the hands of the North Vietnamese Military.
not only are we the most powerful but we are the fattest stupidest country on earth.

Thus is what comes with being the most powerful, decandence and overconfidence in our nation's military, political, and economic strength.Â
[QUOTE="sinarilias"][QUOTE="The_Ish"][QUOTE="mealex"][QUOTE="joetira"]yes we are, the only people who think China is a threat are dumb liberals and Anti-Americanstycoonmike
You're an idiot. China has a capable and fairly well equipped military as well as the largest military in the world if you think they couldn't pose a threat you're an ignornt idiot.

If every army in the world including China went to war with the US army, the US would win in less than 48 hours.(Although US civilian casulaties would be....)
You are joking, right? If the rest of the world could come together and fight against a common enemy, improbable at best, the United States, as well as the majority of the planet, would be covered in so much radioactive slime and glass. The only victors in such a war would be the cockroaches.
3000 nuclear weapons and 1000 thermonuclear missles could be launched before other countries could respond.
Lol Im just kiddin. Physically that's impossible. Missle defense procedures don't allow even 5 nukes to go out at the same time. The US wouldn't even win a fight like that: it's just a method to take the world down with them.
