I ordered lunch today from Papa Ginos and according to their web site, my order should have come to $7.64 with sales tax. When the driver arrived, the total was $9.48. I only had $10 with me so I gave him all $10 and let him keep the change, which turned out to only be 52 cents. I was planning on giving him a bigger tip, but since the total was almost $2 more than I was expecting it to be, I was stuck.

The driver looked a little upset at the small tip. But I figured a small tip was better than no tip at all. Was I wrong? Is a small tip more insulting than no tip at all?

Dunno, I think is worst nothing at all. I always try to give nice tips even if I'm not with a girl and to my friends it seems to bother because most of the times they don't have good pay check, work to much and you will never know the turns in life.

I would give them a tip - If they want a job with higher wages, get a better job.

Don't let them guilt you into giving more. It's his employers job to pay him, not yours. 52 cents is fine.

They already seemed to have added a delivery charge which in most cases are driver tips since most people don't tip or give small ones. I usually give them a fiver and call it a day.

If that happened to me, I'd take his name and next time I was around the actual store, drop in and give him a couple bucks.

I give the delivery driver the change from the amount I pay them, like if it comes to $23 I'll pay with $25 and let them keep the change.

It's not wrong, since they seemed to have already added a $2 delivery charge. I let them keep the change though if there's only small change leftover, I'll give them a extra couple bucks. Though I'm only generous if they show up on time, or earlier. If I'm told it'll take 15-20 minutes to deliver, I expect them to be on time. I once had ordered 2 pizzas and some side orders from Domino's and was told it'd take 30 minutes. The dude showed in 45. After I paid, the change was about 15 cents so I told him to keep it. He actually had the nerve to look down at it, then at me with a nasty look as if to say, "Cheap bastard." Pissed off as I already was I just told him, "If you wanted a bigger ******* tip you should've showed up on time" and let the door close in his face.

If it were me, I would have told the man the situation. "Hey, your site said it was cheaper than this and that was all the cash I had. Take it up with your manager". Small tips, in general, portray that you were unhappy with the service. No tip indicates that you're cheap or that you forgot. If you visit a restaurant don't leave a small tip unless you're unhappy with the service and/or plan on not returning. Then again, don't leave without tipping at all, either. Most of those people get paid less than minimum wage and depend on the tips to get by. 15% is customary. 20% is generous. That's how much (if not more) the meal would cost if they were paid minimum wage.

You should have given him a bigge tip in my opinion. Most of the time the driver has to pay for the gas that is getting your meal to the house. I think it is only fair to give him a few bucks back, since he is paying for the gas out of his own wallet, not the companies.

I'm kind of against the whole tipping thing. I do it, but only because I don't want to take it out on the lowly worker, but tipping is basically paying that persons wages rather than their cheap *** employer. I wish people would just come into my workplace and slip me $5 just for doing the job I was hired to do.

Sure thing. But you also have to agree to being paid less than minimum wage. When I need your services I'll tip you. Until then, enjoy that $2.50 an hour. The employers do it this way because it lowers the amount of money that it costs to make the food (less money in help means more help and cheaper prices for the customers) and they have to pay less in taxes. Tips usually aren't taxed (or, they weren't for a long time, some places are starting to tax them).

The extra $2 was probably a delivery fee. That's kind of a new thing to me. Ever since I noticed it a couple years back, I only tip when the weather is bad.

The way I see it is that it's their job to deliver food...why should we tip at all. Delivery guys/gals, waiters and waitresses all get paid by the hour...the tip is just more. I always tip, a dollar if it was slow and two to three if the delivery was good. At a sit down restaurant I'll tip if the service was good, usually three or four dollars.

I don't think you should worry, the delivery guy is still making an hourly wage.

Yeah i was reading this and getting a little ticked, but then I realized that, as was said, tipping isnt customary everywhere. In the US though, not tipping, or giving a 52 cent tip is the fast track to being put in the "Secret Sauce" list, sometimes youll get a little more than what you asked for.

here's one advantage to tipping big. When I order pizza I get it from the same place normally. I give the driver a $5 tip everytime.

Do you have any Idea how fast my Pizza gets to my place? It's always steaming hot. I bet the drivers fight over who is going to get the delevery since they all know me now. Want cold pizza next time, don't tip.

Oh damn, an hour and a half late? I would've ripped into that dude... Hell, you shouldn't have even paid. Just call the place up and tell them, "either give it to me free or you can take it back and shove it up your *** while I call Papa John's."

Can't say much about pizza delivery people, but in a restaurant, if the waitress is good, I always give 30%. I also tell the waitress if I placed her tip on my credit card, so she can make a note of it and collect when her shift is over.

It's not really a big deal. You don't have to tip him if you don't want to. Sure he has to drive around, but I don't think delivery drivers get paid less than minimum wage like servers.

If tipping was eliminated, the menu price of items would just go up to compensate for the loss in pay from tips the employees once received. Since the employer would now have to pay a higher wage to keep "good" servers.

All it would do is create less incentive to put a lot of effort into your work. Since you and the laziest person on your staff will receive the same paycheck regardless of how hard you work.

Well Id assume they collect a paycheck at the end of the month or every two weeks so I would not feel bad about not even tipping. lol and now the hair cutters around here where I live try to get a tip... When I start getting tips at my job maybe just maybe Ill consider tipping...

The word 'tip' stands for 'to ensure promptness'. If they're not prompt, I don't tip. Simple as that.

ive done work at pizza places and other food establishments. most servers i know get paid less that minimum and make up in tips. drivers provided their own cars and their own gas. tipping is just all around being a nice person. you would waste your gas to get to the store to pick it up. so they waste theirs to get it to you.

the only time tipping bothers me. is a worked a kitched job. but it was fast food. so nothing is brought to the tables. yet people would tip the cashiers sometimes. and thats just infuriating as the cashiers did absolutley nothing but push a button.

I don't agree with the whole idea of tips, as, I shouldn't be the one who has to compensate for the employer not paying the employees enough. Anyways, I know a few people who work in the service industry, and they get paid normally where tips are extra bonuses.
Then brings up the question in the retail business, if I help someone find the right item for them and it took quite a while, shouldn't I then be entitled to some sort of tip? However I am not. Double standards ftl.

SYKLOPS
Maybe it included a delivery fee?

I don't agree with the whole idea of tips, as, I shouldn't be the one who has to compensate for the employer not paying the employees enough. Anyways, I know a few people who work in the service industry, and they get paid normally where tips are extra bonuses.
Then brings up the question in the retail business, if I help someone find the right item for them and it took quite a while, shouldn't I then be entitled to some sort of tip? However I am not. Double standards ftl.

Ah but most don't. Plus, commission based stores usually have a bad reputation from the general public and create very fierce competition between employees. Service industry does not.
Anyways, Im not talking about commission, Im talking about tips. Two complete different things.
