I really enjoy older music. That is all i pretty much listen to.
I have heard new music though, and most of it i can't stand.

Most musicans these days seem to have no talent and most bands sound the same.

I will give some examples
Here is an older song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xhYk9PEmXA

Here is a new song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0iekF87A-s&feature=related

Notice how the first song sounds better, makes you feel better, sounds like the singer and the rest of the band has talent
Then the second song is just trash, that cowbell is horrible and doesn't sound good, and the girl sounds like a tramp :|

Here is an example of an old rap song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjbedJz5J_o

Here is an example of a new rap song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpocrqvP2Yg

Notice how the first rap song sounds like the guy has talent, and the song does make you feel happy and is just a great song
The second song is just a bunch of non sense, it doesn't even make any sense, just complete garbage

So what do you all think?
Did people actually try harder to make great music back then?
Do people just make music now and not even try to make it sound good??

Thats what it seems like, I am happy i have older music to listen to.
I just wish newer bands and rappers actually tried hard to make good music.

As a fan of cIassical music, I say yes. It's better for what I personally like in my music. In a general sense, though, it's not possible to say one is better than the other.

No. 20 years from now our new music will be old and considered classic.

No. We tend to look on the past through rose-tinted goggles, only remembering the popular (and thus, "great") artists while forgetting the one-hit wonders and hacks. Everyone knows The Beatles, but no one remembers the ****ty derivatives they spawned. So when someone asks the same question 30 years down the road, we'll no doubt hear answers of "Yes, think of all the great music like The Arcade Fire, Radiohead, *insert your favourite artist here*, etc," but very few (if any) people saying "No, think of all the ****ty music like Soulja Boy, Ashlee Simpson, Fergie etc."

Do you honesly think soulja boy's music will be considered classic?

I also could never imagine calling someone like Avril Lavigne cla$$ic, or MCR, or slipknot, or coldplay.
I think most new bands will always be considered trash, well i will always consider them as trash.

I'm eclectic and can appreciate things in old and new. I'm not sure I could actually choose between one or the other.

I donno...as music gets older it becomes less unique and everything starts to sound the same, so I guess older music, though in hip hop instead of songs from the late 70s and 80s I like songs from the 90s, so it isn't always true...but I HATE new mainstream...but you shoulldn't of put up Crank That..shoulda put A Milli or something...which all the kids and unknowledgable hip hop people listen to.

If you look at how many great artists are active right now (just count the good ones) and you compare it to any other time, I don't think music hasn't gotten worse. It's just that you also hear all the crap from this time, while you don't hear the crap from the past.

It depndes on who you're asking.

There are some great musicians nowadays, but the real legends are from the 70s and 80s.

Yes. I don't listen to really old music, but most of the albums I listen to come from '99 or thereabouts.

I'll have to AGREE on that one..

But typically classic rock music was created for the sole pupose of connecting to people and being remembers. This is what makes it what it is.

Today's music is more concerned with showmanship and the Money. So it's usually not as high of quality and sometimes is rushed into being made just so that band can make money.

Not at all. What people forget is as music ages the good music lingers while the not so good music disappears. There is plenty of good and bad in every decade.

I'm a huge fan of punk (still), but not that new age "punk" that was made for lil girls on there periods (fallout boy, newfound glory, and that CRAP), I'm talking about REAL punk, Ramones, Misfits (pre and post Glenn Danzig), Blitz Krieg, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, etc.

No. There was plenty of pure crap music wise back then, just as there is now. Plenty of good music that is new, though, you just have to look a bit.

Old Music

New Music

works both ways, see?

People only remember the good music and forget the crap. The majority of mainstream music sucks today, but if you dig a little deeper you're bound to find something you like.

Well i think both of those songs are terrible.
I seriously dislike most new music, it's just not good.
Even if i like some new music a little bit, i still think it's not that great at all.

Nope, they're both equally good, it's just that modern music has a catch: If you want quality nowadays, you have to dig, because the mainstream sucks harder than ever.

It's all subjective, but the reason classic music is better is because most bands are cherry-picked from the era so no one remembers the really bad artists.

they are good for different reasons, i would say.

old music has that nostalgia factor that you can't ignore. that feeling of a) hearing a song and knowing every note, every word and every pause, and b) being instantly transported to a place and time in your life when you hear it.

i run a request line at the radio station here, and almost all the requests are the same songs everyone has heard 1000 times. people just like what they know.

new music has the excitement of discovery attached to it. the first time you hear a song, it's a brand new experience, the kind that (hopefully) sends you running for pen and paper to catch the name from the radio/TV, or google to find out what it is, and hear it again.

I say a good mix is the way to go. you appreciate new music more if you know where it came from, but have you ever listened to a classic rock station? i get tired of hearing those same songs over and over.

short answer is No. Good songs are good songs, no matter when they were made.

Very difficult question. I love modern metal but you can't forget about the old bands that inspired the current bands. It's tough but I'd say current is better than old. Old metal is not as intense as current, for the most part.

I'd have to disagree. While there were good songs recorded a long time ago, there was also trash, much like there are good songs recorded in the modern age, but there is also trash.

Sounds like we have different definitions of intense. Of course, I'll always have respect for the godfathers like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc. Although I have yet to find an 80's or 70's band more brutal than The Berzerker (a modern band).

Well yes... of course it is. The prominence of cIassical composition reached it's peak in the romantic period.

[QUOTE="dracula_16"]Very difficult question. I love modern metal but you can't forget about the old bands that inspired the current bands. It's tough but I'd say current is better than old. Old metal is not as intense as current, for the most part.dracula_16

I think old metal is way more intense.
Metallica is way more intense then any current metal bands.
Well older Metallica is more intense..

Sounds like we have different definitions of intense. Of course, I'll always have respect for the godfathers like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc. Although I have yet to find an 80's or 70's band more brutal than The Berzerker (a modern band).

I just searched for that band on youtube and heard parts of their songs and thats not the metal i am talking about.
I don't consider metal as just a bunch of noise, and someone screaming.
I consider something like master of puppets by metallica as metal.
See new music these days they think screaming and making all that stupid noise is music, well it's not very good music.
At least Black Sabbath doesn't give me a headace within 30 seconds :|

You can't dismiss a majority of new music based on random songs here and there. I don't understand the whole screaming metal craze, that said, I don't understand teh 80s rock craze.

Different people like different things, and for different tastes comes different types of music. The market caters for more tastes, perhaps now than before.

Yeah i know people like different things, but how can people like that garbage??
Maybe there is more music for more peoples tastes, but most of it is not really fun or easy to listen to.
Like it is hard to listen to lots of the new music, most people enjoy to listen to the depressing music.

How can people listen to that kind of music? Like Billy Talent and Simple plan, who ever listens to those bands all the time should get help to be happy.

Recently, yeah.

I've been listening to a lot of great stuff lately from the '90s and '80s, and while that's not really old at all it's much better than most of what's getting made these days. Then again there is a lot of great stuff being put out now.

Elbow's new album, for example, is excellent.

What? Why?

Just because music is sad or whatever doesn't mean the people that listen to it are. I like Nine Inch Nails, alot of that is pretty bleak, and I am a happy person.

And in answer to how people like can like that music, well, they can. Some things just appeal to some people that don't appeal to others in any way. I don't like harsh metal stuff, so I can't tell you why people like it...

And in terms of depressing music, whats wrong with liking it, it is hardly unhealthy.
