My instincts say The Hobbit going to be best movie of 2012, going to win many academy awards again like LOTR.

The Hobbit > The Avengers. The Dark Knight Rises.Skyfall ETC as no other movies released this year even comes close to the epicness and grandeur of J.R Tolkeins saga.

Can't wait for 15Th DEC, what about you guys?

I really liked TDKR but I also like LotR... This will be difficult for me.

It better be one of the best movies of the decade (all three). These movies should be striving for a lot more than best of the year.

no, it will not be the best movie of the year of course that has no bearing on whether it'll win the Oscar

When they put Colbert in the movie for a cameo role it made me think they weren't really treating the material or audience with respect.

It should be great.

As for Academy Awards, the competition is stiff. It would likely be up against The Master, Argo, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Zero Dark Thirty, Moonrise Kingdom and a few others for Best Picture.

I'm definitly not buying into the hype just yet. This movie can definitely go either way.

I doubt it.

It may have worked as one great film, but as it is...it's 1/3rd of a relatively simple children's story, filmed by a director who has a tendency to make everything drag out much longer than necessary. I mean, LOTR felt overlong even with three dense books of source material to work with, so this...well, I'm not convinced.

I'm sure it'll be a good film, but I don't think the overall story is strong enough to top the other trilogy, let alone be the best film of the year.

No. It might make the top 5, but not #1.

I don't even know if it'll win any major Oscars, I haven't seen any praise for it by websites predicting the Oscars

For me it is. I liked Skyfall, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises but LOTR is simply a part of me now and since the Hobbit belongs to the same world and writer that' s enough to make me look forward to it in awe.

compared to lotr the hobbit is a very short book, I'm guessing a lot of filler.

Or shorter films, or a fair amount of new content. I heard the third film has something to do about a piece of literature that was posted in the back of the Return of the King book.

The 3 movies will include content that is not limited to the book.

Although I don' t know to what extent.

That's true. Frodo is in it after all and he wasn't even born in the time it was set.

My instincts say that trying to split a single book into THREE movies is going to lead to a fvck load of wide angle frames of characters walking around through beautiful landscapes and other boring crap.

Personally I think Lord of the Rings series was overrated, and I think the same will go for The Hobbit, so no it won't be the best film of 2012.

I hope so. But condensing a terrific piece of literature like Lord of the Rings is a lot different than expanding on something like The Hobbit.

If LOTR had less descriptions and songs, it would be as long as The Hobbit.

I recently finished re-reading The Hobbit and I'm halfway through The Two Towers (first time in English). The amount of filler content in LOTR is incredible.

I feel like the whole being split into 3 movies thing will severely affect the quality but that could just be my pessimism.

i dont see whats wrong with this... colbert is a huge fantasy nut, tolkian nerd, avid DnD player as well as an AMAZING actor.

i imagine what ever small role they give him will be done with the utmost respect. if there was anyone i could count on playing a minor tolkian character authentically it would be colbert.

They stand capable of being the biggest disappointments in cinematic history. By a long shot. And it won't be that hard for it to happen either. Pretty much everyone is going to be expecting nothing short of "best movie of all time" and will bag them when they end up being simply great movies.

I have faith but would be absolutely crushed if they let me down.

The bar was set almost impossibly high by the LotR trilogy that anything less than runaway Academy Award ( like so much of a runaway that they don't even bother nominating other films ) will be a failure.

Idk, I doubt it. It should be good though. So far the best film of the year imo is Argo. Haven't seen Lincoln yet though. Also really looking forward to Zero Dark Thirty, and Django.

Won't know until I see it. Though I think it's safe to say it will win several awards just because of the production value and the names involved. That should be enough to guarantee a few trophies regardless of whether or not the film is actually enjoyable.
