Is there anyone else here who doesn't succumb to myspace, facebook, and twitter?

Haha! Mankind as a whole has always been vain & self-absorbed. The media simply broadcasts it for everyone to see. I deleted my myspace account (or as much as i possibly could). Have a facebook but rarely log on. Never even bothered with Twitter, as it's the most pointless of all socializing sites.

I have a facebook account, but I generally only check it when I get an email about something I care about. Otherwise I usually don't log in unless I'm really bored and can't think of anything else to do.

I have none of those accounts, primarily due to me not being interested in writing up little inane comments on every waking facet of my life...

I use facebook to connect with friends when I can not visit them over school breaks. How does this make me a rebellious, ignorant, egotistical superstar?

Except that not everyone uses Facebook for that, I use it to speak to my friends and people from school that I rarely see any more, most of whom don't have MSN. It's quite a good device for that as it's a fairly casual atmosphere. I've had conversations with someone I was friends with when we were both about 7 or 8 and I'm now 19, it may just be me going through all the hassle of tracking them down and finding a phone number then contacting them seems a bit weird and creepy after not seeing them for that long.

I only have a Twitter account, which is quite useful. I never use the thing, but I follow a lot of musicians/directors, so I can get up-to-date information on artists I'm interested in. I don't get the hate.

I can agree with this. I never found the use for twitter.

Reliable information leaks and super quick news. The only reason I even have it any more is to get those sort of things, well, and to occasionally send a tweet to someone famous just because I think the concept is quite amusing.

I said the same thing for years, but I ended up making a Facebook profile. I wanted to keep in touch with kids from high school and college friends. Facebook makes that really easy. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Yeah, there are practical uses for Twitter, but they account for about 0.0001% of the actual usage of the service. :P

I mostly like Twitter because of Stephen Colbert's feed.

Oh yeah, I know there are loads of people who do just use it as a Facebook status but update it 100 times more often. I did that at first then realised it's pointless. I also thought of another use, you know those girls on Facebook that make status updates about how much they hate men every 2 hours? Well what if we redirect them all to Twitter so they can chat as much rubbish as they want and the 2 people in the world that actually give a flying **** can listen along, leaving us all in peace.

I haven't found anything I care enough about to follow on Twitter. I have a deactivated Facebook account, but I will reactivate it soon because I'm going to lose a significant amount of ''face'' time with my closest friends. I tend to forget MySpace even exist.

Haha this reminds me of a kid who was in my sociology and history class. He would sit in class and update his twitter every like five to ten minutes about the class and what not. We used to call him twitter boy haha.

So...because I have facebook and twitter (which I think twitter is so much better, and no, I don't do the whole "update every little thing I do" business), I'm not humble and I'm just full of myself? Even though I use it to keep in touch with people and and talk to literary agents and other writers, as well? Guess I just learned something new about myself, then.

I only partially agree with you because I don't think everyone who's on Facebook is there for vanity. It can be a useful way for people to keep up with each other.

Yet, by using a public forum to criticize people who socialize via "this virtual vainness" that is Facebook, Twitter, etc. and insinuating that they are viewing themselves as "self-important superstars" and are "self-absorbed" individuals, you're doing just that.

If you'd be as "selfless, humble and non-egocentric" as you apparently think you are, it wouldn't be too difficult to accept that everybody has their reasons to do whatever they do and that their actions are not necessarily the result of some flawed logic just because they are contradictory to your own beliefs.

I use Facebook, and I honestly see no problem with that. I'm not self-absorbed, I'm not dumbing myself down, etc. I'm merely keeping in touch with people. It's quite nice now that I'm a year removed from high school, and I anticipate finding it even more useful in the years to come.

I would say those percentages are far off. Maybe if you are only talking about tweens and teenagers or purely Twitter, but I hardly see that much attention whoring.

From those sites I only have a twitter account, and as you can see I don't use it too much, I only have it to follow some magazine writters and some accounts made for the lulz like Dan Hibiki or Darth Vader.

I think you have a skewed perspective. I have a profile on facebook with a whopping 50 friends. All of them are actual friends with the exception of a few family members. Just because people go out in the world doesn't mean they need to take a brillo pad shower, scrubbing away the human contact of the world when they get back home.

I have a Myspace & Facebook account but rarely log into it UNLESS someone sends me an email or comment. I don't have a Twitter account & probably never will. I just don't see the point of it.

The reason I kept Myspace is because 2 of my buddies are on it & Facebook because my family & relatives reside (literally) all over the world. It gives me a chance to keep in contact with them without costing a pretty penny.
