What force out there causes people to become close minded and islamophobic? As Islamophobia quickly becomes the new anti-semitism, it is important that we know the answer to this question, should we become close-minded ourselves

Media.
The bad bad people use islam as their cover to do bad things, and that draws media attention. The media loves it. They continuously associate islam with bad things because they love getting bigger groups of people involved.

If the good islamic people don't want to be associated with these bad people, they could explain why the bad people are not islamic. But, i don't think that could ever beat the media attention. You see, people don't want to be informed. They get their news from sensation.
So maybe they should do something really big and really nice, something the media can't get around. The media is very powerful but also attached to strings. It just has to be one really big and special thing. Just one thing. Something very newsworthy.

I don't know what. I'm not getting into one of those religious struggles again. At least, not if i can help it >.>

Islam is not a victim. I understand that it always wants to be treated as though it's untouchable, but that doesn't mean Islam is a victim when it gets due criticism. It never has and never will deserve the status of being immune to criticism.

I agree with what you say, but there are way more than a "few" Islamic radicals that hate the west, and the US in particular. There are a lot of Muslims in the world, and even a fraction of Muslims equates to millions.

No religion should be immune from criticism, true. But at the same time, it needs to be examined why the world's second largest religion has rapidly become a near synonym for terrorism.

The majority muslims on the internet certainly don't help....In fact I would say they do a pretty good job of reinforcing the sterotypes the media throws around.

The media has found that fearmongering sells. So that's what they provide. And far too many people listen.

Yeah, but there are white protestants who think that basically anybody who isn't a white protestant is inferior. Don't see the Media push them on the media. I know what your saying, and I basically agree, but just sayin.

Still, the KKK still aren't blowing themselves up in marketplaces on a daily basis. In reality most of their rallies bring out more opposition demonstrations than anything else. Where as you have giant crowds of people in Iran shouting "death to America"....lets not forget the large crowds of Palestinians who felt the need to dance in the streets of the West Bank and Gaza after 9/11.

i couldnt agree any more.i dont know how things ended up like this, but 99% of muslims think that the whole world is making a gigantic conspiracy against us.no doubt there is a conspiracy and the proof to this conspiracy is how the media and governments treat muslims, but that does not mean the whole world is against us.i think the scenario we are living developed like this: the Zionist lobby in their believes want the whole of Arab world, palestine was just a start.the arab world is islamic and the rest of islamic countires support them, lets ruin the whole thing, lets create the notion of "muslim terrorists",make the media spread these thoughts, and USA with the so called bush invade Afghanstan and Iraq and kill innocent muslim villagers like you are killing ants.we as muslims got furious that the world at some point looked like its all against us,so we developed this complex, and now 99% of muslims think that the world is against them.with this attitude, you will find really wierd things are being said from muslim people.i consider myself open minded while people think me wierd.i dont believe that the whole world is against us and they dont want us...etc i only believe that the Zionist lobby is behind all of this and unfortunately lots of people follow thier propaganda.if anyone reading this find it crazy and idiotic to think that the Zionist Lobbyis behind the islamic terrorists like AL-Qaida,dont you find it wierd that Al-Qaida hijacked a couple of planes from the most powerful state in the world,in the middle of the day,and crashed them into USA's most important centers??? i mean if a couple of retards could do it,then how come the soviet union couldnt???? and the most important thing is that Al-Qaida stroke in USA,frqance, germany, italy, spain as these countries in AL-Qaida believes are the vile countries against islam, but didnt strike in Israel, the most eligible country to be stroke since we actually have a war with?????? but i have to say muslims developed some retarded things like burning flags, protesters saying kill them! and this BS.this is just pure shame

its mostly media, seeing as they are one of the things wrong with modern society, in the form that there in atleast, some of it can be your parents, depending on what age the person in question is, older generations tend to be a lot more close minded about issues like race and homosexuality

It's unfortunate but the media and probably the way the few radicals act. For example the Danish cartoons thing? Why were people burning European flags and torching/bombing embassies? Those images reinforced very negative uncivil images of the Islamic world as violent people. I know even Muslims were ashamed of those images but it doesn't help.

While the media can be misleading, you cannot neglect the fact that there are a lot of Muslims out there that despise Western Civilization, such as this man, who is the chief cleric of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Really, with a lot of Islamic clerics spreading hatred around (that is beyond comparison to any other Religious Leaders), it is no wonder why Islam has such a bad reputation, and until people like that man stop doing it (and apologise immensely for it), Islam will probably always have a bad reputation. I also don't see any opposition to that man's presence in the United Kingdom by Muslims. Even the Muslim Council of Britain (which was established to express the views of Muslims in Britain) seem to support what the man is saying: "Although the MCB had condemned anti-Semitism, it has previously declined to criticise the anti-Semitism of al-Sudais and has continued to support him despite his anti-Jewish tirade." In all seriousness, it is not fair to the Muslims that just want to live a peaceful life, and they really should be opposing everything that gives them a bad name, as that is the only way Islam will be able to rid itself of its negative reputation.

A phobia is an irrational response to future situations stemming from a previous incident. So Islamophobia in an individual should be caused by a previously negative or traumatizing event.

i think it's the lack of understanding in muslims, plus they seem to be judge by the bad apples, not the good ones. this happens not only to islam, i'm sure it has happened to many other groups, probably like african-americans, mexicans and surely many others. as far as i'm concered, islam teaches it's followers to despise terrorism, and promotes peace, even with people of other religions. suicide bombing is NEVER in their teachings, commiting suicide means a ticket to hell forever.

garathe_den
Bush wouldn't, and didn't, change anything. As Islamic fundamentalism keeps growing, it doesn't matter who's at the helm in the US. They'll keep blowing stuff up and call for death upon the western world. Things like 9/11 would have happened with or without Bush. The bombing in Indonesia also had nothing to do with him, as did the massacre at the House of Habbad in Mombai. Islamic extremists are the worst kind of terrorists there are, and that's why the world hates them. People should really stop blaming George W. Bush on everything and start seeing things as they are. So yeah, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is something that you can blame on Bush, and all the bad media that it attracted, but hell man, he's not the cause for hatred towards Islam.

I agree with both of you. Its partly due to storys of terroisum by the radical muslims but mainly the stupidity of society to think that those people represent the rest of islam.

The ISLAMIC republic of Irans constant state preachings of hate against the West probably add quite a lot too it. Also the amount of Muslims that move to the West the complain about wanting the Sharia Laws put into place in that country, doesn't really help. Added with the Radicals contempt on hatred against the west, freedom ect. and the lack of positives shown in the media. What is needed is the moderate Muslims to do something about the hard liners. Otherwise it will just escelate.

I think a lot of it has to do with stereotyping.

There are altogether too many Islamic nations that don't like Israel (no matter how much good they try to do), and the U.S. supports Israel while at the same time wanting the Palestinians to have land.

Only thing is, these other Islamic countries won't denounce and stop funding the terrorists that attack Israel, so therein lies your dilemma.:)

I look at

Terrorists....they mostly claim to be Islamic and working for Islam.

Iran... ruled by Sharia Law, separation of sexes, stoning of women, publicly said they want to wipe Israel of the map, publicly said Islam will take over the world. Iran supports terrorist groups, Iran has nuclear ambitions.

Saudi Arabia... ruled by Sharia Law. Seperatikon of sexes even more extreme than Iran. Women must cover up head to toe and women have no basic rights. The 9/11 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia.

The wacked out reaction of the muslim world to CARTOONS. Death hit decries from Islamic countries on writers and film makers who insult Islam.

The demonstration of millions of Islamic peoiple in the streets chanting death to America and watching them party in the streets after 9/11.

Honor killings...they feel it is ok to slaughter family memebers who break some Islamic customs like, a daughter who holds the hand of a boy.

Should i go on........

Good read: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2001/09/15/koran.htm

I myself remain open minded to any religous belief, looking to find value. In addition, I find that suicide bombers and terrorists have misinterpreted the Koran literally. And as no religious text is meant to be taken literally, with no doubt would they be damaged by such misinterpretation.

In addition, when we hear about a Jewish, Christian or Buddhist man assaulting a person, his religion is always ignored. When we hear about a muslim assaulting a person, his religion is never ignored, which accounts for how Islamophobia is being made mainstream

Terrorists.... There isnt much Islamic "terrorist". Blown out of proportion.

Iran... Does not rule by the Sharia, Sharia comes from quran and Sunnah (sayings of the prophet)/ They use part of the quran and they basically reject and Sunnah and have their own books.

Saudi Arabia... Does not rule by Sharia. Deals with interest, Does oppress women to a degree. Oppresses labor workers. The Royal family are crooks.

The prophet is someone we Admire and we are not going to let you dishonor him. Ask questions or critisize to learn. But that was stepping over the line.

I dont know what you are talking about. "Death to something" is a phrase used in the middle east to show frustration.

HOnor Killings are Pre-Islamic. Is has nothing on Islam.

Do go on. i want to see it.

Do go on. i want to see it.

mixedplanet

To a degree lol.

Well we have to reply otherwise You might consider this another victory for aggressive stances or so. Cause there You go again with spreading Your ow so scary words. 'we are not going to let You dishonor him'. And i can't say anything about it can i? Or i'll be 'stepping over the line'? That's not the way it works.

You think it's normal to kill people who dishonor a prophet? Or to entice people to kill people who dishonor a prophet? Maybe the prophet would have loved the cartoon, it's not like anyone is asking him. They think it's a good idea to kill in his name. Easy does it, no need to blame Yourself when You love an easily angered prophet. Or isn't it the prophet who is so easily angered and incapable of dealing with jokes? I bet he loved it though. You know i'd love that too, people getting killed after i'm dead because of the things i said.

1. Yes, but they claim that, just because they claim doesn't mean they're right.

2. Iran dosen't support terrorism :|

3. Yes, but that's the government's choices on what people do, not the Religion

4. The reason most mMuslims overreacted was that Mohammed's face waas never revealed before in the Religion (no documentation was taken on his looks) and seeing those cartoons was equaled to blasphemy (I admit it was an overreaction)

5. Yeah, no.

6. But that doesn't apply to Islam.

Its a number of things. Firstly, before anything else its the tiny group of retards that blow themselves due to their own delusions and use Islam as an excuse. The media then picks this up and multiplies it by a million, applying it to all muslims to increase 'Islamophobia' which results in some muslims feeling victimised. This then results in anger and angry protests, which makes the media happy and strengthens their biased campaign. This cycle then repeats...

Well 'The West' stuck its nose in the islamic world for long enough.. It is more a question of there nationalism hating 'The West' than there religion. All be it if some of them use religion as a basis to radicalise there followers, which is common, but the media like to potray this.
