"We" are still intolerant of other's race, gender, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs. Why is that? Is humanity destined to never reach enlightenedment? I for one have no problem with the differences between people...but after spending the morning reading some of these threads I have come to the conclusion that there is no hope that humans will do the right thing.

Your thoughts?

Really? That was the tipping point into misanthropy? You're a smart guy, I'm surprised you haven't figured it out by now. It is much, MUCH easier to spread peace than hate. Proof of concept: it took 246 years for black people in America to not be slaves anymore; Hitler put Jews and other people in camps within his first five years of power.

Actually it was the lack of progress.....

And that's exactly where your self-absorbence reveals itself clearly. Progress has occured around us in abundance, especially in the past 10-15 years. If you haven't noticed, you're self-absorbed. :)

So hate, discrimination, homophobia, sexism, racism, religious intolerance have disappeared. Oh wait...no...

They have not disappeared, but they have dwindled down somewhat. Are you going to deny this? If you do, it's just further proof of your self-absorbence.

I guess one thought that I have is why you're making a judgment about the state of humanity based on the postings found on a video game website.

No, but if your a bit older like I am. It's sad to see the younger generation be just as intolerant as the older. Sure there have been advances, we have a African-American President, in a few weeks, but in topic after topic many people here lack common decency to respect each other's differences.

Dude, they're kids, and they're goofing off. Any intolerance shown by the younger generation is learned from their parents and other older people anyway. So blame them. Or us. Whatever. When you look at this generation and shake your head in disbelief, remember who came first.

How exactly does you being older having any relevancy to this discussion? It seems a little condescending to me.

As to the actual topic. You are making a judgment on the whole of humanity based on a group that represents probably .00001% (probably even less) of the entire population of the planet. How exactly does that make any sense?

Again, I would have expected this generation to be more tolerant. Being older condescending? I'm merely making an observation that as an older GS member I was surprised at the level of intolerance on the boards, that's all. I thought that the younger generation was moving on. No I'm not making a judgement on all of humanity, it's just a snap-shot.

Agreed on line one for the most part, on the second line as a parent raising children not to act this way, I hoped there would be more parents doing the same.

It was actually the original poster who was passing judgment on humanity. However, I've bolded a portion of your last post to show that you are making a judgment on a particular generation of people. You're claiming that this generation isn't more tolerant than previous generations, but the only thing you are basing that claim on is the postings found of this website.

I don't think the issue is whether or not kids deserve the blame. The issue is whether or not kids are more or less tolerant than they were in previous generations. That's what I've gotten from these posts so far anyway.

I think they are more tolerant, naturally. But any intolerance that does show, is coming from left over nonsense they absorbed from their parents and other older people.

Certainly some intolerance is the result of upbringing, but I don't think that's the only reason there is intolerance in the world. I think a lot of it has to do with the way the human brain works. One way that our brain helps us make sense of the world is to catagorize things. We can look at a table that we have never seen before because in our brain we have a basic idea of what a table is suppose to look like. The downside to this however is that while people can't be catagorized quite so easily, our brains still kind of naturally do it. If something bad happens to us, especially when we are young and our brains are still developing, then this can have a pretty big influence on how we view the world.

Oh please. Get off your high horse. No, humanity is never going to reach "enlightenment." Yes, there will always be racism and bigotry. Just deal with it.

Actually it's not passing judgement when clear examples are in front of you. It's called an observation but I look forward to your opposing proof. And for the record...it exists outside gamespot as well. But you knew that........;)

Both of you, let me be clear. Kids today are more tolerant. Parents are 100% of the reason, why any aren't read page 1 of my post. But before I started coming on GS I was under the illusion that they were even more tolerant than they are. That's my point. I've got a 14 year old step son, goes to the same HS I did, things are much better now only 16 years later. Your arguing with someone who believes the same as you do, just want's more progress.

That's true, but I think more and more people are realizing that a tolerant attitude towards other people's beliefs and ideas does benefit them.
