I don't get why anyone would consume wasteful calories in a drink, about 140 per 12oz soda. If I ever drink soda it's diet or 0 calories. Regular sodas are even too sweet for me now.

But this is expected of NY when I went there a year and a half ago a pack of cigarettes cost $9.50, at CVS. In CA they are like $4.95. A 20 oz coke is 240 calories and a 16 oz coke is 187 calories. Its a 22% reduction in calories which is pretty good. But banning 20 oz just to ban an extra 53 calories isn't that persuasive to me. The real goal is probably to get the fat people to realize that the government can and will try and make you skinny, if they can so they are more aware and start to lose weight.

Like fat people gotta realize it ain't good to be fat. People don't like it and neither does the government. Stop being fat.

Stop letting the govermnet stick its hands in your lives and make your own decisions. stopping sales of 20+ oz drinks solves nothing

wis3boi

I think you are going to have a hard time convincing people to protest over four ounces of soda. Not that I wouldn't love to see that protest, Coca-Cola can sponsor them!

not saying they should go all out protest, but dumping coke in boston harbor would be funny

The only question is how should this Coke Party dress?

Polar bears. We dress up like polar bears, raid the nearest ship, and dump the coke in the harbor.

I also say we tar and feather Bloomberg just for kicks.

It's all fun and games until someone gets tarred and feathered. :x Bloomberg could probably outrun people in cumbersome bear suits though.

This is a good start.

Obesity is one of the biggest problems facing America today.

Fat People use more of everything, which puts a strain on all resources.

In 1911 the worlds Fattest man appeared at the Worlds Fair. He weighed 360lbs.

A hundred years later we have:

"Mr. Bloomberg has said the plan does not limit consumers choices, since customers can still purchase as many 16-ounce drinks as they would like."

It does limit choices... If someone wants a 20oz, then how does buying 2 16oz bottles solve their problem? They want 20oz, not 32...

It's less convenient to buy two bottles instead of one. And if people end up buying 2 bottles instead of 1, then obviously it's not better for their health...

We should try to stop obesity because it is unhealthy for the individual, not because they use more things. I dont know how so many people look down on fat people, especially when the person in your picture is protecting and serving you guys.

I don't really have an issue with this. *shrugs*

Aljosa23

what about two-liters are they banned, or does this ordinance not apply to grocery stores? 2 liters are bigger than 20 ounces I think, but 2 liters usually aren't drunk all at one time.

Great article about the ban.

Public Health. As it's the failure of Public Health, that lead to the intrusion of Freedom. People in general are dumb. And the larger the populous the dumber they get. The masses don't really want to make decisions for themselves. They can't handle the responsibility.

The article suggests that fast food chains may (un)knownlingy increase sales by using a behaviour pattern that is ingrained in human nature. Fact of the matter is that the western world has overconsumption problems leading to obesity. Furthermore, I don't see how it's convenient to be tricked in buying more then I actually need.

Even though this ban has its flaws, it certainly does seem to have some advantages, although I don't see the point of banning them in stores. I do think that the "regular" soda offering in restaurants and cinemas should be what a regular, non-obese person would want, but why would they ban them from supermarkets? 1L bottles aren't banned from supermarkets...

NY continues to try to be CA's little brother in stupidity.

LJS9502_basic

Unlike some of CA's policies, this is actually a very good idea. Portion sizes have increased exponentially in the last 40 years, and all that sugar that the public consumes adds up to cause obesity. The sugar industry has a very powerful lobby in the US and UK, which is why measures such as this haven't been attempted before. I'm glad they are doing this.

Yes let's all leave our decisions up to the government. It's not like another bottle can't be bought increasing portion size by more than 4 oz. People that want the government to do their thinking for them disgust me.

While I agree that this is a dumb ban, he does bring up an extremely relevant and important point with portion sizes. Most restaurants you go out to eat at serve just enormous portion sizes and people feel compelled to eat what's on the plate simply because it's there.

They idea behind this law is that people don't need a refill in general. They simply buy medium because they feel like having a medium, the mentioned research suggests that the amount of soda contained in the medium is largely irrelevant. So if one reduces the amount of soda in the medium they will drink less.

No, I cannot drink as much as I want. Well I can, but I cannot necessarily purchase as much as I want. I can't buy 20 ounces if I want 20 ounces. I have to buy 32 ounces. I have to more money than I intended, and 12 ounces goes to waste unless I drink the entire 32 ounces (thus defeting the supposed purpose of this law).

Once again, the law assumes (on the basis of research) that many people don't exactly know how much food they want or need. They simply buy a medium and are satisfied with this medium size. The research also suggests that the amount of soda in a medium can largely vary while still giving the feel that people had enough. So reducing the amount in a medium size would still satisfy the consumer while reducing the amount of intake and so reducing a slight bit of the over consumption problem.

Bull. If people want a medium they buy a medium. If they want more...they buy more. Not sure where you purchase but there is always the choice given to the consumer. Which IS who should have the choice.

This line of thinking can be applied to almost anything in terms of food and drink.

You should read the second article I posted, it does a really good job in explaining why the ban is a good thing.

A brave step. I'm impressed.

Government getting involved in personal choice is not a good thing. Isn't that what keeps gay marriage illegal?

[QUOTE="Aljosa23"]This is a poor example of that. You can still drink as much as you want, there's just more barriers now.

Yes, I realize that the law assumes that people need to be treated like children. The law should stop assuming that.

This won't last longer than the alcohol ban.

Yes it can be. What of it? Is it the government's job to dictate how much we can eat or drink?

[QUOTE="rastotm"]

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] Restaurants generally serve pop by the glass. You can of course get refills. As for fast food places which I assume you mean.....eat in and get free refills there as well. LJS9502_basic

They idea behind this law is that people don't need a refill in general. They simply buy medium because they feel like having a medium, the mentioned research suggests that the amount of soda contained in the medium is largely irrelevant. So if one reduces the amount of soda in the medium they will drink less.

And that is not the governments business. Period.

It's the governments job to protect it citizens. Whether the law is effective or not, the ultimate goal is to reduce the continuously growing obesity problem. Why would this problem not be a part of the governments job?

That portion size study does bring up a good point though. Although more so about why it would be beneficial, rather then justifying the need for a ban.
